The Kinder Institute provided
me the opportunity to take an
in-depth academic look at American
constitutional democracy and the way
we interact with it. Working within
the Missouri government, I have had a
chance to watch the principles
and processes discussed during
my time as a Fellow play
out right before my eyes.

As a Fellow, I was part of an environment that so
clearly demonstrated how the learning process
ought to look: collaborative, enriched by the
knowledge and experiences of those around you,
and—most importantly—one that you enjoy.
The Kinder Institute also helped me
cultivate academic skills that have
been integral to my success in
graduate school thus far, including
working effectively in a group,
drafting, editing, and revising
papers, and producing high-quality,
meaningful work.
WHETHER YOU WANT TO SERVE AS AN R.A. IN WOLPERS, SPEND
A SUMMER WORKING AND STUDYING IN D.C., WRITE FOR OUR
JOURNAL ON CONSTITUTIONAL DEMOCRACY, OR STUDY AT OXFORD,
ALL COLLEGE RESIDENTS WILL BE INTRODUCED TO THESE AND
OTHER UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS THAT THE KINDER INSTITUTE
SPONSORS. IN OTHER WORDS, WE SEE THE RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE
NOT AS A ONE-YEAR BUT AS A FOUR-YEAR EXPERIENCE.

The faculty at the Kinder Institute are thoughtful
and intelligent, real-life scholars, and the fellowship
you can have there with peers who are hungry to
learn—from a variety of disciplines—is well known
on campus. But Kinder possesses a rarer, subtler,
forgotten pillar of education: mentorship.
I now work on university campuses
everywhere—from the Ivy League to
state schools to small liberal arts
colleges—and I can tell you that this
trifecta of education is rarely found.

The Kinder Institute allowed me to gain
experience in the professional world, build
lasting friendships, and make important
contacts, and I have been able to use the skills
and networks I developed there to get my
dream job with a federal agency in Kansas City.
The amazing people I met and the experiences
I had at the Kinder Institute helped put me
above and beyond in the job market.

The Kinder Institute played a crucial role in developing
my leadership skills and empowering me to turn my
ideas into reality. To this day, I’m grateful for how my
experiences founding the Journal and in D.C. and
the Fellows program helped me grow, allowing
me to now work toward shaping India’s
development story by improving the quality of
education in tribal communities.

The Kinder Institute gave me a much more positive
view of the United States and of our politics and law,
because it gave me an in-depth understanding of
why things are the way they are.
What is the Kinder Institute?
We’re a new signature academic center at Mizzou that brings faculty, undergraduate and
graduate students, and members of the community together to explore the ideas and
events that have defined the complicated story of constitutional democracy in the United
States. All Residential College participants will be immediately integrated into the learning
environment we’ve created at the Kinder Institute and introduced to the full breadth of
our academic and extracurricular programs, which include: a summer program in D.C.,
week- and year-long study abroad programs at Oxford, and a B.A., Minor, and Certificate
in Constitutional Democracy.
Why the Kinder Institute Residential College?
Launched in partnership with Residential Life and the College of Arts & Science, it’s an
unrivaled opportunity for first-year students interested in American history and politics
to live together in historic Wolpers Hall, take classes together during the fall and spring
on the founding of the United States, build a community through the academic and
extracurricular programs associated with the Residential College, and receive valuable
mentorship from the college’s in-house R.A. and Collegiate Fellow.
Where is Wolpers?
Located in the heart of campus, Wolpers Hall is a recently renovated, community-style
dorm right across the street from the Rec and MU Student Center, and a ten-minute walk
to the Kinder Institute’s offices in Jesse Hall.
Does the Residential College cost extra?
Not at all—only the standard tuition, fees, and room and board costs.
