CO_Q2_Math5_Module5 Lesson 1 Adding and Subtracting Decimal Numbers Through Thousandths What’s In Let us read, analyze and solve the problem below. To know how much was in the account, add the decimal numbers by arranging the numbers in column and by aligning the decimal point and the digits that belong to the same value. Then, add or subtract the digits and check the answer. 1 Php 950.808 + 9.501 There was Php 960.309 in the savings account. Solve the following: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 28.501 -10.295 = ____ Riz put Php950.00 into a savings account. After a while, Php9.50 is added to it. How much was in the account then? 32.587 +19.630 37. 219 + 0. 317 0.285 + 37.215 98.724 – 15.561= ____

CO_Q2_Math5_Module5 What’s New In this lesson you will apply your knowledge of adding and subtracting decimals by using a food menu to stimulate a real-world restaurant experience. Shown below are some food items and their corresponding prices in a local Restaurant. Situation: If Mrs. de Guzman orders 1 veggie meal, 2 chicken spaghetti meals, and 1 seafood meal, how much does she have to pay? If she has Php.500.00, how much money was left to her? You can pretend yourself as a waiter of the restaurant. Take note of the items being ordered including their prices. While Mrs. de Guzman is eating, you can try to solve as to how much amount she will be paying afterwards. MENU Fried Chicken Meal………. Php 57.50 Spaghetti meal……………… Php 48.50 Chicken spaghetti meal…. Php 89.75 Hotdog Sandwich Meal… Php 42.25 Cheeseburger Meal………. Php 45.50 Beefsteak Meal……………. Php 75.50 Seafood Meal……………… Php 98.00 Veggie Meal………………. Php 42.25

CO_Q2_Math5_Module5 What Is It In your study of addition and subtraction, you have learned to add and subtract numbers easily even with place values up to hundredths or thousandths. You will also do the same with adding and subtracting decimals through thousandths. Study the process below and follow the example given on page 5. When adding and subtracting decimals, align the decimal points in a column, then perform the indicated operation as you do with whole numbers. Remember to regroup when necessary. Php 42.25 - Veggie Meal 89.75 - Chicken Spaghetti Meal + 89.75 - Chicken Spaghetti Meal 98.00 - Seafood Meal Php 319.75 – the amount Mrs. De Guzman has to pay. Php 500.00 - 319.75 Php 180.25 -Money left of Mrs. De Guzman

CO_Q2_Math5_Module5 Practice Activity: Directions: Use grids to add and subtract decimals. 1) Find the sum of 0.4 and 0.7. Follow the steps below: a. Shade 0.4 on a tenths grid. b. On the same grid, shade 0.7 in another color. c. Write the sum as a decimal. ____ 2) Subtract 0.4 from 1.6. a. Shade 1.6 on the tenths grid. b. Cross out 0.4 of the shaded part. c. Write the difference as a decimal. ____ Example No. 1: The milkman rode 0.22 kilometers to make his first delivery of milk and 0.04 kilometers to make the second delivery. How far did he travel in delivering milk? We can solve the problem above by following these steps: Step 1: Write the decimals in column form. Align the decimal points. 0.22 + 0.04 Step 2: Add as in whole numbers. Add the digits belonging to the same decimal place. 0.22 + 0.04 0 26

CO_Q2_Math5_Module5 Step 3: Write the decimal point in the sum. 0.22 + 0.04 0.26 To add/subtract decimals, align the decimal points in a straight column. Add/ subtract as in whole numbers. Use the decimal point to separate the whole numbers from the decimal numbers in the sum/difference. Regroup the decimals if necessary. Example No. 2: Subtract 0.15 from 0.832 Solution: Subtract the decimals in column form. Put extra zeros to the right of the decimal (if necessary) to have the same length. 0.832 - 0.150 0.682 = the difference Subtract like subtracting whole numbers, then affix the decimal point in the difference.
