Meet Trevor The Timberwolf - Mascot

Howwwwldy! My name is Trevor and I joined Lone Star College-Tomball as the
mascot in the spring of 2007. As you may have noticed, I am a Timberwolf. My
journey began in the mind of Shannon Marino, the Student Life Director. She
realized that in order to inspire school spirit among the students and the larger
College community, there had to be a uniting factor. Thus, I came to be an
integral of this great college! I enjoy long walks on the beach volleyball court,
meeting all the awesome students at LSC-Tomball, and attending LSC-Tomball
athletic games, activities, and community events.
My Pack at LSC-Tomball are very proud to be Timberwolves. Dr. Nutt, our College
President and one of my besties, always shares, “You should know that we are
very proud of our identity as Timberwolves! Rudyard Kipling’s quote from the
classic tale, Jungle Book, is important to us: “The strength of the pack is the wolf.
The strength of the wolf is the pack.” You will also hear from time-to-time, and at
various college events, some shout “One Wolf!” and your response should always
be “One Pack!” Say it loud and proud Timberwolves!

A Message from the Student Life Director at
Lone Star College –Tomball

The Office of Student Life is the heartbeat of the college community and as such,
operates as the hub of activity for all student organizations, sports teams, recreational
sports and campus activities. The 2019-2020 academic year was full of opportunities
and unprecedented, life-altering challenges.

The Office of Student Life supports over 25 student organizations, four sports teams,
many campus and recreational activities, in addition to the programs and events hosted
by the department. Our Registered Student Organizations (RSOs), contributed over 970
hours of service throughout the Tomball and Magnolia communities. This was an
extraordinary achievement.

The Office of Student Life is comprised of two professional staff members, one part-time
professional graphic designer, three+ work-study students and 15+ Student Activities
Board members. This team hosted 7,802 students throughout the academic year. Our
department was able to realize a 6.6% overall lift in persistence through our student
engagement efforts. This continues to be an outstanding accomplishment! Our work is
important and has an impact on our student’s persistence and success. However, the
mission of the Office of Student Life transcends numbers. The development of our
students and their connection to the LSC-Tomball campus is at the heart of our mission,
and it is the quality of our students’ experience where we aspire to offer an
Extraordinary Experience.

The Student Government Association (SGA) has continued to strengthen under the
leadership of Professor Cory Colby. The Student Activities Board had an excellent year as
well. This group of talented, agile and dedicated students hosted numerous events for
their fellow students throughout the year. Having both organizations active and working
hard as servant leaders, adds a tremendous amount to the culture at LSC-Tomball.

Once again, during November 2019, I had the privilege to take 10 student leaders on our
annual trip to Walt Disney World in Florida to Disney’s Imagination campus to attend
their Leadership and Innovations sessions. The students were nominated by their RSO
advisors for this extraordinary experience and were selected after an interview process.
This trip is an amazing opportunity for the students and the College. The sessions
included Leadership Strategies, Design Thinking, Techniques of Teamwork-Disney Style
and Creating a Culture of Excellence. Upon returning to campus, the students used

5|Lone Star College-Tomball

what they learned at Disney during the spring iLead Retreat for the RSOs. The student
leaders lead their fellow officers through a design thinking process of how to get more
students involved in student organizations. At the end of the process they created the
plan we will implement fall 2021.

March 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic brought an unpresented change to our
programming. Our students left for spring break and never returned to campus. There
were no opportunities for face-to-face goodbyes or a chance to wrap up plans for the
remainder of the spring and summer semesters. The Student Life team immediately
jumped in to learn everything we could about virtual programming, Zoom, WebEx,
Discord servers and Instagram Live. We have gained so many new skills throughout the
pandemic, while we worked to support our students in different ways and provide
opportunities and programming that met them where they were. Challenges and
difficult times offer opportunities for growth. For years our team struggled with how to
support our online only and Early College High School students remotely and because of
COVID-19, we now have a toolbox full of programs we will continue when we return to
campus and our new normal to support those students.

The 2019-2020, academic year was one like no other. Pre-pandemic, we were having a
great year at LSC-Tomball. With the pandemic, we faced our toughest challenge to-date
and that’s saying something. We have weathered numerous hurricanes (Harvey and
Ike), floods and Houston winter storms. The pandemic has been tough, but we have and
will continue to persevere and lead our students through to the re-opening of campus,
when that day comes.

On behalf of the Office of Student Life team, I am delighted to present our annual report
for the 2019-2020 academic year. It highlights the many ways in which we, through our
partnerships with students, faculty and staff, continue the tradition of creating
extraordinary opportunities, in-person and virtually, that make attending Lone Star
College-Tomball an experience not found at any other community college.

Leadership at Lone Star College-Tomball

Students have numerous opportunities to grow their leadership skills throughout
the year. Participation in a student organization is one of the best and most
rewarding opportunities to grow as a leader. Communication, time management,
working as a team, interacting with other students, faculty and staff who are from
different cultural backgrounds, personalities and mindsets, allow students to
further develop the soft skills that employers are looking for in their employees.
Lone Star Leadership College
Lone Star Leadership College provides an opportunity to educate and mentor
emerging student leaders for diverse roles of leadership linking Lone Star College
(LSC) and the community. The goal of the program is to develop and enhance the
leadership skills of its student participants, while encouraging an appreciation for
giving back to the community.

Through interactive monthly sessions, student will visit with local leaders about
putting leadership skill into action in real-world situations. Participants also
receive applicable leadership skills training based on The Five Practices of
Exemplary Leadership in The Student Leadership Challenge by James Kouzes and
Barry Posner, as well as the opportunity to work in a team environment at the
leadership skills retreat. The program is offered at no cost to the participant and
begins in September during the fall semester continuing through the subsequent
spring semester and ending in April. Each LSC Campus has five spots available
within each annual cohort.

Walt Disney World Leadership Trip
Disney’s Imagination campus’ Leadership and Innovations sessions are an opportunity
for 10 student leaders to travel with the Student Life Director to Walt Disney
World in Orlando, Florida and immerse themselves in Disney’s leadership training
and culture. Students are nominated by their RSO advisor for their exemplary
leadership, and they may or may not hold an office with the organization.
Nominated students are selected after an interview. Students chosen to go on the
trip are then required to give back and share what they learned with their fellow
RSO leaders throughout the rest of the year.

Membership in the Student Activities Board and the Student Government
Association are also opportunities for students to get involved and add to their
leadership tool kit. Both are servant leader organizations who focus on their
fellow students and their experience at LSC-Tomball. In addition to serving as an
SGA officer, RSO members serve as Club Council members and participate in the
semester SGA General Assembly meetings. Every LSC-Tomball student is a
member of the Student Government Association.
