A tool called a melt flow index tester is used to gauge a molten polymer's flow rate under particular circumstances. The test gauges the volume of polymer that passes through a predetermined orifice in a predetermined amount of time at a predetermined temperature and pressure. In order to measure the melt flow index, a heated barrel, a piston, and a die with a predetermined orifice size are used. After being loaded into the barrel, the polymer sample is heated to a predetermined temperature. The molten polymer is continuously loaded by the piston and pushed through the die opening.
