THE IMPORTANCE
OF
SCIENCE Atatürk’s thoughts are based on a

“rational scientific base”. At every opportunity,

AND he emphasized the importance of physics,
chemistry and science. After the War of

TECHNOLOGY Independence, he said “ The next victory will be
in science and economics”.

The new state did not have sufficient staff. There was a country and society that was

not ready in terms of science, ideas and economics. Technical personnel, ideas and

scientists were almost nonexistent. The conditions of the period also hindered

developmental efforts. There were no schools, universities, academics or teachers to do

research and use science. There were no scientific institutions, besides it was nearly

impossible to find engineers, researchers and scientists. In other words, everything

based on science was inadequate in every field, especially in education. In all fields, it was

necessary to struggle and advance in the field, especially in education.

Atatürk expressed the importance of carrying an ancient nation to the civilized level

in every opportunity. He emphasized the importance of being contemporary by saying: “ We

will raise our national culture to the level of contemporary civilization.” As for modernity, he

pointed the lack of science. He also stated that the new republic would be based on

science and technology. After the War of Independence, he suggested the increase of

scientific research in all new circumstances. He wanted everyone to turn to scientific

engagements in every occasion. “After three and a half years of this struggle in terms of

science, we will continue our struggle in terms of education. “ We are going to be factory

workers, artists and teachers. Let’s always have our notion on this target” he said. In

another speech he said, “ We will be there wherever science and technology exist and put

it in everyone’s” mind. There is no prerequisite or restriction for science and technology”.

These remarkable statements show how much importance Ataturk gave to science and

technology.

Atatürk wanted his nation to follow the developments in science and technology very

closely in order to reach a high level of modernity amongst civilized nations.

ATATÜRK AND TURKISH WOMEN

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish Republic, always gave
great importance to Turkish women. Before the foundation of the Republic, Mustafa Kemal
Atatürk had talked about the social status of women. He wanted all women to be part of

the working life. After founding the Republic, he wanted to improve the social, economic and
political conditions of women. He said “Humankind is made up of two sexes, women and
men. Is it possible for humankind to grow by the improvement of only one part while the
other part is ignored? Is it possible that half of a mass is tied to earth with chains while the
other half can soar into skies? “Therefore, he gave some rights to women. Here they are:

Women were given the rights to elect and be elected in 1934.

Women were given the rights for education.

Civil law was adopted.

AN ANECTODE ABOUT ATATURK AND TURKISH WOMEN

Here is an anecdote from the book Atatürk’s Trips to Adana by Taha Toros, a very
important Turkish historian and writer.

17 March 1923, Tarsus

Mustafa Kemal walked from the station to the city center for a while. He was passing
with happiness by people who had filled the roads to see him since the morning. At that
time, suddenly he encountered an incident. A woman in the National Struggle blocked
Atatürk’s path and bent down to his feet.
She screamed with tears:
- I die on the ground you step on, my Pasha!

Mustafa Kemal bent down to lift the woman off the ground. At that time, it was said
that this woman was the woman (Adile Çavus) who fought in the War of Independence.
Mustafa Kemal, with drops of tears falling from his eyes, held up the woman and said:
- Alas! Heroic Turkish woman! You deserve to be carried on the shoulders, not to crawl on
the floor.

IMMORTAL HERO

T oday, Turkey is an innovative, advanced and independent country. All of this was thanks to Mustafa Kemal

A tatürk. Atatürk saved Turkey and tried many ways for the development of Turkey. He is the greatest leader of all
Turks. In other words, he’s the father of Turks. Atatürk was a brave, forward-looking, patriotic, determined and rational

leader. Atatürk was also a lover of independence and freedom. Atatürk said ‘Either freedom or death.’ and this proved

his love. Thanks to him, Turkey is freed from enemies. Thus, Turkey became an independent country. Atatürk brought

innovations to our country in many aspects. To give an example, on October 29, 1923, he declared the Republic.

After the proclamation of the Republic, the state was called the Republic of Turkey. Besides this, Atatürk attached

great importance to education and training. In 1924, the “Tevhidi Tedrisat “ Law was enacted. This law enabled unity

in education and training. Atatürk brought so many innovations to our country. Atatürk’s greatest aim was to create

a developed and independent state. He accomplished this goal with determination and courage. Today, Mustafa

Kemal Atatürk is still the greatest hero of the Turks.

AN ANECDOTE

A tatürk was a very valuable man for the world and this story shows how not only the Turks but also the other
nations remember him.
On November 10, 1938, after the bad news was spread, a German professor who worked in Istanbul

University Law School couldn’t decide if he should go to class or not. After that, he decided to ask the rector of the

university. Then, there was a conversation between them like this:

“Sir, I don’t know what to do. Should I go to class or not?”

“What do German people do when a dignitary dies?”

Then the German professor said, “I don’t know. We didn’t lose a dignitary like Atatürk!”

NATURE LOVER ATATÜRK

Atatürk was a leader who respected nature and human rights. He always emphasized the
importance of these.
The most sensitive and well known story related with Atatürk’s love of nature is the story of the
Walking Mansion.
Gazi Mustafa Kemal first came to Yalova in 1927 and stayed in a tent at Baltacı Farm, which
he had previously bought. He visited the city many times. While travelling to Bursa on August 21, 1929, he
passed from the city again. With Ertugrul Yacht, Mustafa Kemal gave a break to his travel near a pier
where there was a large farm called Millet Farm. Within this farm, there was  a sycamore tree and Atatürk
was really impressed by it.
The yacht was stopped at the request of Atatürk, who was affected by the image of sycamore. He
went to shore by a boat. Then Mustafa Kemal started to rest under the shadow of the sycamore, and
ordered a mansion be built near it.
The construction of the mansion started on August 21, 1929, and it was completed on September 12,
1929.
When Ataturk went to the Mansion one day in the summer of 1930, people working there
wanted his permission to trim the branches of the sycamore tree extending toward the roof of the Mansion.
The tree was very close to the building and damaging the roof and the wall. Ataturk, on the other hand,
instead of cutting the branch, ordered to move the mansion a little forward on tram rails.
This task was given to Yusuf Ziya Erdem, Director of Science Affairs in Istanbul Municipality. Mr.
Erdem, chief engineer Ali Galip Alnar and technical staff came to Yalova and began working.
The team started by digging down to the base level. The tram rails were brought from Istanbul and
they were placed under the base of the building. As a result of long efforts, the building was placed on the
rails.
On the afternoon of August 8, 1930 the moving began. Mustafa Kemal, Makbule Atadan,
Deputy Governor Muhittin Üstündağ, Safety Science Director Yusuf Ziya Erdem, engineers from Istanbul and
journalists watched this work.
Moving of the building was done in two stages. On August 8, the terrace section of the building, and then
within the following two days, movement of the main building on the rails was completed. As a result, the
building was shifted to the east about 5 meters.
Thus, neither the mansion was destroyed nor the sycamore tree was cut. In addition, after that day, the
mansion was named as “The Walking Mansion”.
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk came to this mansion many times after this event and he rested
under the tree with pleasure. After the death of Atatürk, like the other properties of him, this mansion
was donated to the Turkish Nation.
To conclude, Atatürk never wanted to cut even the branches of a tree. He always worked for the
nature. Atatürk Forest Farm, Youth Park, Hippodrome and afforestation of Ankara streets are the examples
of this. I would like to finish this writing with a quote of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

“Quickly find me a religion. A tree religion. A religion that you plant trees as a worship!”

advanced the arts, the sciences, agriculture and industry.

ATATÜRK:A R EAL HER O

M ustafa K emal Atatürk was the founder and the first president of the Republic ofTurkey. He was not only a president for the
Turkish people, but also a leader.

He was born in 1881. He went to Semsi Efendi School. When he was a child, he wanted to be a soldier so he studied in Military Preparatory

School in Salonika in 1895. In 1905, he completed his education life with the rank of Staff Captain. Mustafa Kemal, who spent his almost entire life in army,

graduated from War Academy. A series of challenging but full of victorious battles and vital decisions followed the torrid period. On 23rd April 1920, Mustafa

Kemal founded the Turkish Grand National Assembly in Ankara and he was appointed Commander-in-Chief by the Grand National Assembly. On October

29th, 1923, the Republic was proclaimed and Mustafa Kemal became the first president.

Atatürk’s life was not easy. Sometimes he didn’t sleep or he didn’t eat dinner because he was running from front to front. In the end, he had

cirrhosis. He went to Dolmabahçe Palace and he lived there until he died. Atatürk died in Istanbul on 10 November 1938. At five past nine, life stopped for

the Turkish nation. Nobody wanted to believe that he had died. People cried for days and they mourned for him for months. On 10th November every year

people visit his mausoleum, Anitkabir.

things with just one look. I looked at his picture again and I understood that you can long for someone you have never met. I’m thinking of Mustafa Kemal
with my eyes closed and my mind open.
He started his journey in 1881. His innovations, the rights he gave us and his founding the Turkish Republic makes us see how great of a man he
is. So many Mustafa Kemals are being brought up in this country and so many Mustafa Kemals have sacrificed themselves and become martyrs for the sake
of the country. If I had a chance, I would like to talk with him and thank him for all that he did. If I had one more chance, I would like to live in a time when
Mustafa Kemal existed, to live every day he lived and to tell him that what he did was something that would never be forgotten but remembered every day
even if the years went by. For women, Atatürk became a light and fought to get the rights that they deserve. Look how Atatürk has expressed his trust in us,
“O rising new generation! The future is yours. We have established the Republic, and you are the one who will keep it alive forever.”

Towards the end of his journey, despite his illness, he still fought for his country until his last breath. He had to be sure that he did the best he

could because there would be no one like him. On November 10, 1938 when the clock hit 09.05, the time stopped for a moment and when he closed his

eyes an era ended but there was a difference. This era would be protected. I understood that a death could only be as immortal as this.

ATATÜRK IN THE EYES OF THE WORLD

November 10, 1938 was a sad day not only for Turkey but also for the nations of the world. In our
age, no name has created as much respect as Atatürk’s name. World leaders and many famous names
expressed their admiration and respect for Atatürk and touched on his importance in history. Here are
the famous words for Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the explanation of world leaders.

UNESCO’ S DESCRIPTION OF ATATÜRK

Atatürk, a superior man who strived for international understanding, cooperation, peace and
revolution, who carried out extraordinary revolutions, was the first leader to fight against colonialism
and expansionism, respecting human rights and pioneering world peace. He was the founder of the
Republic of Turkey, a statesman who did not discriminate between people throughout his life.

John F. Kennedy, President of the United States

Atatürk reminds us of his historic achievements, was one of the greatest leaders of this century
(20th). He was a towering figure of human ideals. His extraordinary leadership and his military genius
accomplished so much for his country; first in battlefields, and then in building his nation, materially and
in spirit. He created a modern and sovereign state from the ashes of a defeated empire. He was a great
peace-maker, an ultimate reformer and a torch-bearer of freedom. He won not only the heart of his
nation but the hearts of the oppressed nations as well. We all miss him.

Winston Churchill, British P.M.

If Atatürk had lived today, the world would have been a more interesting place. When, in 1915,
during our ill-fated Dardanelles campaign fate brought us across in Gallipoli we immediately knew that
we were up against a military genius and a formidable strategist. Soon he emerged as a noble warrior.
Later he proved himself as a genuine peace-maker and a consummate statesman as well.

Emanullah Khan, King of Afghanistan

After his passing, I personally and all the Afghan nation are in deep sorrow, and I am at a loss to
find words to express my grief. Atatürk was the father of the Turkish nation, and also he was the father of
many other nations that look to him as a spiritual savior.

Sucheta Kripalani, President of the Indian Parliament

Atatürk was not a leader only for the Turkish nation; he was a banner of freedom for all the
subjugated nations that strived for their independence. The Turkish nation won its independence
through the active leadership of Atatürk, and we won ours by following his example and heeding his
spiritual guidance.

Franklin D. Roosevelt, President of the United States

In my interview with the Foreign Secretary of Russia, I asked him, to his opinion, who was the
most remarkable statesman in Europe; without hesitation, he said the most remarkable statesman in
Europe was Atatürk, the President of Turkey. My despair today is that I missed the chance of meeting
that great man whom history books glorify lavishly. His achievements are mind boggling.

German VOLKISCHER BEOBACHTER Newspaper

Atatürk left Turkey without an enemy. That’s what no president of our time has ever done.

Sunday Times, ENGLAND

England salutes the great man that England has known first as a brave and noble enemy, then
as a faithful friend.

Chigago Tribune News, THE USA

Professor Herbert Melzig

Atatürk should be a role model and light for those who want to re-establish peace and
well-being in the world of suffering and ensure human development not only materially but also
spiritually.

Albert Lebrun The President Of France

His peaceful work and his intelligence will leave traces in the history of nations.

ATATÜRK’S LOVE FOR CHILDREN

Atatürk loved children all his life. He didn’t have a child but he
had a big affection towards children. He lived with a child named Ülkü
in the last years of his life and he loved her all his lifetime.

Ülkü was a symbol of his love for children.

He was a caring person. He always spoke to children, listened to
them carefully and answered all of their questions.
Vedat Demirci told a story as follows:
One day, Atatürk went to a children’s party. Everybody was surprised to
see him there. A little boy stood in the middle of the hall and looked
at Atatürk. Then, he said “My dear Atatürk, I want to kiss you.”
Everybody was quiet and waited for Atatürk’s answer. He broke the
silence and said “If you want, you can.” The boy ran to Atatürk and
hugged him. Other children shouted “Me too, me too.” at the same time.
Thus, all the children kissed Atatürk as much as they could. This was a
very emotional moment for all the people. Atatürk was very moved at that
moment.
Atatürk is a person to be taken as an example in every walk of life.

ATATÜRK: A GREAT LEADER

Atatürk is the greatest leader in the world. He was the one that fought for us in WW1 with his small

group of soldiers in Gallipoli. He fought the British, the French, the Italians, the Australians, and the New Zealanders.
Atatürk was the one who only cared about his people. He did not care about money, he wasn’t a greedy man. He was the
one who gave us independence. He was the one that made Turkey more open to science and modern world. He was the
only man that cared about women’s rights. He gave women the right to vote. He took women’s rights very seriously. He
made Turkey one of the most civilized nations of the world. When he died in 1938, an Italian radio announced his death
with the following words:

“Napoleon, Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar stand up and respect because your superior is coming.”

Here are some of his important quotes:
‘’If someday my teachings conflict with science, choose science.’’

‘’Science is the most realistic guide for civilization, life and success in the world. To search for a guide other than science is
absurdity, ignorance and heresy.’’

“The torch that the Turkish nation holds in her hand is positive sciences.”

ATATURK AND TURKISH NATION

Who was Atatürk? He was a soldier, a general, a teacher and also a politician. He was patriotic and he

advocated for the citizens’ right of living on the soils of Turkey independently. I want to mention two or three things on
this special day. We thank him for leading the Turkish nation. Parallel to one of the famous sayings of the great leader,
“Turkish society who contributed in the establishment of Turkey is called Turkish nation.” lt does not matter whether a
person living on this land is Turkish or Kurdish or with any other ethnic identity; all the people who shed blood for this
land are part of the Turkish nation. Let’s not forget, as long as we are a whole, there is no power on earth to divide us.

ATATÜRK AND MODERNITY

Atatürk carried out many revolutions. His purpose was to form a more contemporary and cultured nation. First of

all, he gave women’s rights because in the past women did not have any rights. As a result, women became more
independent and respected. Secondly, he carried out the alphabet reform because it was very difficult to

read and write in Arabic letters. Moreover, citizens thought books written in Arabic letters as holy books. Alphabet reform

solved this problem. Furthermore, it helped to increase literacy rate. Finally, he legislated the surname law.

Contemporary clothing was the most natural sign of civilization. For this reason, Atatürk gave great importance to hat and
dress revolution as a part of modernization breakthrough. As a result, these revolutions have made Turkey a more modern
and contemporary country.
