LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Friend, ‫בס׳׳ד‬

Rabbi Sacks taught many pearls of wisdom. One that he would often repeat was that the
Hebrew word for a crisis is a ‘mashber’, which also means a birthing stool. Many cultures
teach that a crisis can also be an opportunity. But it is in the Jewish tradition, said Rabbi
Sacks, that we go further. Like childbirth, the old situation comes to an end. Stability is lost.
But for the Jew, that is a call for hope. If we work together, then what can emerge is far
greater than what was there beforehand.
This past year has been a crisis for the whole world. Closer to home, it has involved numerous crises for our students,
and for young Jews across the UK.. We may never fully return to our pre-Covid way of life. But it has very much been a
birthing stool. The amount of innovation, from the mass social media reach, to the fast-forwarding of digital courses,
and from the developing of explanatory High-Holy Days home kits, to virtual internships and learning programmes,
has allowed us to increase the number of young Jews we engage with in a significant way. Moving forward, it is likely
that a hybrid of online and in-person engagement will become the staple of our work.
The heroes of this innovation include the hardworking Aish UK team, who from the word go refused to just hunker
down and just to try to use zoom to replace live classes. From the word go they looked for the huge opportunities
that these shifts provided. They are driven by a deep passion for the Jewish people, and also for a real care and
understanding of where the individual sixth formers, university students and Young Professionals are at, and all that
they are going through.
Our virtual Gala offers us an opportunity to showcase some of this innovative shift, and to show you how the young
Jewish community responded to and gained from all this. We hope that in getting to hear from some of them, you
will emerge inspired, and that in getting to see behind the scenes, you will gain a deeper understanding of the
engine that is offering so much power to the young Jews of the community.
There is one other special group of heroes, and that is you, the supporters. Many of you have had a really tough year,
and there are so many urgent crisis charities vying for your generosity. It would have been so easy to let our work for
the future of the community take a back seat for the year. It would have been a strategic error, and could have had
terrible ramifications, but it would have been understandable nonetheless. But that is not the pathway you took. In
call after call, and meeting after meeting you reiterated the age old Jewish commitment: to do all we can to ensure
that the children of the community have every opportunity to pick up the torch and to play their part in the Jewish
story.
We hope that the evening will provide you with a glimpse behind the curtain, to see all that you have made possible
and because we cannot show you everything in one evening, we have enclosed this booklet to share with you some
of the key innovations, adaptions, and highlights of 2020.
May you and your loved ones be blessed with good health, with financial security, and with the ability to play your
role in the greatest story that was ever written: our story; the Jewish story.
With very best wishes,

Rabbi Daniel Rowe

LETTER FROM THE CHAIR OF TRUSTEES

Dear Supporters and Friends,

I hope you and your families are safe and well.
I, together with my fellow trustees and the Virtual Gala committee, are looking forward to
seeing you on the 26th. In the meantime, I hope that you will enjoy this brief update featuring
some of the highlights and extraordinary achievements of Aish UK over the past 12 months.
Everyone will agree that this has been an unprecedented year that has thrown up new challenges for all of us. As
many of you know, I have the privilege to serve in a number of roles for Government bodies, charities and private
sector organisations and I have seen how each of these has responded to the issues arising from the Covid pandemic.
I am pleased to report that the response of the Aish UK staff has been truly exceptional and amongst the best I have
seen.
It is generally accepted that great organisations have a clear view of their purpose, vision and values - with engaged
staff who share the organisation’s goals.
Aish UK’s staff and volunteers are amongst the most creative, caring and driven people I know. But what gives
Aish UK its greatest strength is that all of them know just how critical our mission is of ensuring the continuity and
commitment of the next generation of Jewish people. And I am confident that this sense of purpose is shared by all
of you - our supporters and friends.
The Virtual Gala will showcase in more detail some of our incredible work, and will allow us a glimpse behind the
curtain to meet a few of the people whose efforts, ideas, commitment, passion and dedication have made this
success possible.
Every successful team and organisation need a leader and we benefit immensely from the leadership provided by
Rabbi Rowe.
It is a huge honour for us that the family and Office of Lord Sacks zt”l have allowed us to dedicate in his memory the
Rabbi Sacks zt”l Pioneer of Jewish Education Award. Rabbi Sacks zt”l was a great supporter of Aish UK and inspired
us in much of what we do. His commitment to education was unconditional and we recognise the responsibility we
have to his memory. In his book “Lessons in Leadership”, Rabbi Sacks zt”l said that “The highest form of leadership
is teaching”. We hope that we will continue to respond to the challenge of providing leadership and teaching to our
Community.
It is fitting that the first recipient of this newly named award is Jonathan Goldstein in recognition of his outstanding
work for Jewish education, particularly in Essex, and as the founding Chair of PaJeS.
We hope that the hour or so that we spend together on the 26th will be entertaining, informative and inspirational,
and that you will see how much of a difference your support makes to the vital mission of engaging, inspiring and
empowering young Jews across the country.
Thank you so much for joining us, and thank you for your ongoing support,

Jeremy S Newman

THE RABBI SACKS ZT”L PIONEER OF JEWISH EDUCATION AWARD

We are honoured that the family and office of Rabbi Sacks zt”l have agreed
to let us rename our Pioneer of Jewish Education award in his honour.
We are also delighted to announce that the first recipient of this newly

named award will be Mr. Jonathan Goldstein, for his outstanding work for
Jewish education across the community, and in special recognition of the

fantastic work he did for Jewish schools in Essex.

6

JONATHAN GOLDSTEIN

Jonathan is the Chairman of the Jewish Leadership Council, the umbrella
body of British Jewry’s central organisations and charities. He was
elected to the position in May 2017.
He is the Chief Executive and Founder of Cain International, a private
investment firm deploying capital across debt and equity strategies
across the US, Europe and the UK in real estate development, special
situations and lifestyle & leisure businesses.
Jonathan grew up in Ilford where his parents and grandparents were
involved in a range of organisations from the local shul and Ilford Jewish
Primary School to the JNF and Jewish Blind. As a youngster, Jonathan was
a member of BBYO, a participant in the ILTC programme and president
of the Jewish Society at the University of Manchester.
In 2007 a Jewish Leadership Council report ‘The Future of Jewish Schools’
found that the Essex Jewish community schools were struggling and
their future uncertain. Jonathan spearheaded the Redbridge Jewish
Education Renewal Project to bring the then Ilford Jewish Primary School
(today the Wohl Ilford Jewish Primary School) and Kantor King Solomon
High School) together onto one campus educating 1,400 children aged
2 to 18. Jonathan’s determined leadership saw the project through and
helped to reinvigorate the Essex Jewish Community.
The same report also highlighted the need for greater cohesion across
Jewish schools, and in 2012 Jonathan became the first Chairman of the
Partnership for Jewish Schools (PaJeS) an umbrella organisation offering
services, strategy and support to the over 120 Jewish schools in this
country, serving over 35,000 Jewish children.
Tonight’s award is to recognise the incredible work and service he
provided to both the Essex schools’ project, and also his role in helping
to build PaJeS.
Jonathan is currently the Chair of the Chief Rabbinate Trust, and,
together with his wife, Sharon, is an inaugural Honorary President of
Camp Simcha. Previously, he was Vice Chair of Jewish Care and Chair of
Governors of Kerem School in Hampstead Garden Suburb and a Trustee
of Camp Simcha.
Jonathan and Sharon have four children Adam, Natalie, Sara and Benjamin.
