The first quarter of the year marks a change in the seasons. In the west, the beginning of the year comes in the depths of winter, then segues into the blossoming beauty of spring. Here in the tropics, the difference is not so marked save for the slight chill in the air in January and February. Instead, we mark the quarter with numerous celebrations from different cultures, adding color, wonder, and flavor to the first three months of the year. In February, the Year of the Wooden Dragon comes roaring in and we here at Crimson Boracay are pulling out the stops for a truly lavish celebration of the Lunar New Year. It sounds like a story straight out of a romantic comedy for the silver screen: a friendly message pops into your Facebook Messenger inbox saying hello. That greeting leads to a date, then another, and another...until romance blooms and the happy couple makes their way to the altar. In this case, life imitated cinematic art when Carl Navarro and Joeza Arabia met online and built up a gorgeous relationship offline in Canada. "He made the first move," Joeza recalls happily. "Ours is a very millennial love story because it started when he messaged me on Facebook." A simple hello led to cheerful - and later meaningful - conversations. Not too long after, on Carl's birthday, they finally agreed to meet up - and the sparks began flying from there. It’s a Family Thing "Carl was actually the first official boyfriend that I actually introduced to my parents," Joeza says - and that was a major thing because family is a big thing for the both of them. "We basically hung out every weekend together with either his family or mine. I'm also glad that my little cousins liked him because I'm the big sister of the family, so I'm glad that he got along with everyone." The couple got engaged in 2021 and it was a sweet affair in the Japanese Garden of the famed Butchart Gardens in the town of Brentwood Bay the scenic Canadian province of British Columbia. "We both love Japanese food and entertainment, Carl explains. "And, within the Butchart Gardens, there was this acre-wide area built around a Japanese theme." Taking Josh, Joeza's brother into confidence, he made plans to formally propose in the gorgeously oriental glade. And so, just by the lakeside, he gamely popped the question to Joeza and she said yes. Flying Home Once the engagement was settled, then came the business of planning for the wedding itself. The pair began seeking out venues a whole year before they planned to tie the knot, beginning their search in March of 2022. "We wanted an intimate beachfront wedding with just our nearest and dearest," Carl recalls. "Initially, we began by looking at venues in Mexico. However, when we checked, the cost of having everyone from our families there for a week was roughly the same as holding the wedding back home in the Philippines." Joeza adds, "We thought that, as everyone hadn't been home [since the pandemic hit.] So we thought that we could hit two birds with one stone: a gorgeous beachfront wedding, and a grand vacation for the whole family." A few calls were made to the different luxury resorts on the island, but Crimson beat everyone to the finish by not only being the first to respond, but also offering the most viable package for the ultimate beachfront romance. Why Crimson? For Carl and Joeza, the Crimson Boracay team certainly spared no quarter when it came to getting the venue ready for the wedding, as well as ensuring the overall comfort of their guests, especially the elderly members of the wedding party. "The staff were really helpful," Carl says happily. He added that Joeza's elderly grandmother had difficulty moving around, but the attendants who assisted her were both helpful and attentive, going so far as to lift her to and from the beachfront for the ceremony proper. "That was very nice of them," Joeza agrees. "They were very fair with the way they treated everyone, the way Filipino hospitality always is - it's the greatest!" From the wedding itself to the reception, the bridal party truly enjoyed themselves. However, the fact that they needed to fly home almost as soon as the wedding was over meant that they could not thoroughly experience all the amenities offered at the resort. Nevertheless, the newlyweds loved their venue and the professional way it was set up and the overall way the wedding and reception were handled. They even appreciated how excellent food made its way to theirs and their guests' rooms upon request. This level of service went far beyond their expectations, making for a truly memorable milestone in their lives. "We have traveled a lot around the world and, so far, Crimson is one of the best," they say.
