ESA IC News

Epsilon Sigma Alpha International Council Newsletter

Kim Kummer, ESA International Council President 2018-2019
The calendar turning to September marks the start of school and football
season, the end of white pants and shoes until spring, and the beginning
of a new ESA year. If you are the state or chapter president, is your head
spinning like mine? Where to start and what to do first. Let’s first
acknowledge what a wonderful summer we had and fabulous time at IC
Convention in Phoenix. What an inspiring week learning new ideas during
our workshops, celebrating our philanthropic giving, and renewing
friendships. I enjoyed every moment of convention week and that is what
I plan to experience this year...enjoying each moment.
ESA ~ A Gift takes on many possibilities. As we start our year I encourage

each ESA member to share their gifts with those around them, take time to appreciate the gifts of
others and share the gift of ESA by pledging a new member.
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month and I challenge all ESA members to take part in the St.
Jude Walk / Run to End Childhood Cancer. ESA is a Gold Level sponsor this year and through our
participation we can meet our goal of $100,000. I had the privilege of visiting the hospital in August. As
we were touring, the guide talked about the defining moment everyone has when working at ALSAC or
St. Jude. She witnessed a Mom receiving the call of “CANCER FREE”. Before she shared her story, we
passed a husband and wife in the hallway. I can still see the grim expression on their faces. I don’t know
what the reason for their looks and never will but it continues to haunt me. That moment changed me.
I’ve always fundraised but I am going to FUNDRAISE! I know I can ask one more person to donate so
that another family doesn’t have to experience those same feelings. Join an ESA Virtual Team or an ESA
Team in your area today.

September 2018

I hope you will join me wearing your ESA gear on Wednesdays. Let your clothing or jewelry be a
conversation starter. Use those opportunities to share about the good works of ESA bringing more
good people to our organization to enjoy the good times! Brenda Meyers met my challenge the first
Wednesday which could lead to a new member. For those that love posting on social media let me see
you wear your ESA clothing on Wednesday.
I am surrounded by an amazing group of women excited to work for the membership. Your International
Council officers are just a phone call or email away if you need anything. Have a wonderful year, share
your gifts and begin planning your Choctober membership recruitment event.

Easterseals

Hello Everyone,

Hope everyone had a great summer. School has started and
chapters are gathering to start a new year.
I am sure we are all making plans for a great ESA year in our
chapters and in our states events. I do hope in your planning, all of
you have included Easterseals this year.

I have sent all State Easterseals Coordinators and State Presidents a
challenge for the year. It is not a difficult challenge. I hope you
will enjoy it and you don’t have to leave home to participate! If

September 2018

you have not seen it or heard about it, please contact your State Coordinator or State President to
share it with you.

I am working with Easterseals staff to begin gathering as many opportunities as I can for ESA to
help them continue their great work in helping many people of all ages with overcoming and/or
assisting them with their disabilities. The challenge is just to get everyone started!

Please stay tuned – I am going to share ways in which we all will be able to help this coming
year as “we take on disabilities together”!

ESA hugs to all as we share our gift of ESA with others.

2018-19 IC Easterseals Coordinator

Parliamentarian

Hello,

It was great seeing everyone at IC Convention in July! People say it was hot, I know the temps
were very high. I only left the hotel twice, once was to an air condition stadium, so I didn’t really feel
the heat. That all said, I now believe all baseball stadiums should be air conditioned. It’s hard to
believe we will soon be talking about Fall!!! Which means FOOTBALL Season!!!

I am very honored to be serving on the IC Executive Board as Parliamentarian. I have sent out
emails to all those serving an IC position last year, asking questions about the job description in the
Essential Edge. If you haven’t checked your email in a while; you
might go look for an email from me. I know at times we all hate to
hear the word bylaws. I would like to make that as positive of a word
for everyone as possible. So, with that said, my next task will be
working on bylaws. If anyone has something they feel needs to be
changed or looked into please contact me. My email is
[email protected], I look forward to seeing you.

I sure am hoping to see lots of you soon around the ESA world.

Love,

Denise Holdaway
IC Parliamentarian

Philanthropic

Happy autumn!
It is never too early to be tracking your philanthropic hours, miles and money! We
all know that philanthropy is a year-long-activity for ESA members.
It would be very helpful to know who the Philanthropic Chair is for your state.
Please forward their name and email to me at [email protected].
I look forward to hearing of your state’s progress throughout the year.
Agape,
Chris York

The lucky winner of the St. Jude Dream Home was announced!! Dreams do come true. The Dream home
raised $725,991.00. This record fundraiser raises hospital awareness and funding for kids fighting cancer and
other life-threatening diseases. The construction of the home would not be possible without the generous
support of the community and loyal sponsors including: Foster Signature Homes, KOKH Fox 25, 101.9 The
Twister, Edmond Furniture Gallery, 405 Magazine, The Oklahoman, Edmond Life & Leisure, El Latino
American, Legacy Cleaners & Laundry, Epsilon Sigma Alpha, and national sponsors; Brizo, Shaw Floors, and

Trane and Bosch. Thanks to
all who helped.

60 people attended the St. Jude floor signing of the 2018 St. Jude Dream Home. Representatives from Shaw
flooring, Foster Signature Homes, 101.9 Twister, Edmond Furniture Gallery, Fox 25 and Epsilon Sigma Alpha
members attended the special event. The theme is “Buy a Ticket, Make a Difference.” The proceeds from the

St. Jude Dream Home valued at over $650,000.00 helps ensure
families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel,
housing or food - because all a family should worry about is helping
their child live. Kristi Pendleton and her son Wyatt spoke of their
personal experience with St. Jude. Wyatt has been in remission for
6 years now.

State of Texas, Publicity Chairman – Cheryl Deleranko

The Texas August State Board and Leadership Seminar was held August 10-12, 2018. We met in
the West Texas town of San Angelo, at the Wingate by Wyndham Hotel. Our Hostess, Beta
Lambda #5036, did an imaginery job of making all of us

feel right at home. A great
list of restaurants,
shopping, and local
activities made it so easy to
find our way around this
nice, quaint city. Most of us
followed that list, as we all kept seeing each other at the same places
around town Friday night and Saturday afternoon.
Gratitude is sent to Chapter President, Valerie Dickens, her daughter Leanne, and
all Beta Lambda members for their graciousness to create a fantastic weekend
and lasting memories. While Texas is not known for a summer rain storm, the
heavens opened up for a much-needed shower on Sunday. Imagine that!

September 2018

Our Texas State President, Kelly Kinser, chose a theme entitled “Just Imagine”…”Imagine what
you could do if you could do what you imagine.” Her symbol is a fairy touching a star, as she sits
atop a crescent moon. Marsha Killam led us in an exceptional and very interactive discussion to
“imagine” the possibilities available to make ESA even greater in the future. Each team (table)

brainstormed and came up with dozens of new
ideas to put into action immediately. We were
provided wrapped shoe boxes, that had a peek-a-
boo hole with a ‘curtain’ to cover the contents of the
box. We inserted our hand into that opening just to
feel that hidden item inside. Can you “imagine” that
our imaginations went a little ‘wild’ describing these
little odd shaped items? It was amazingly fun and
would make a great ice-breaker for a membership
drive. After our minds were stimulated, the goal
was to come up with lists of ideas to increase our membership. Adding fun
and laughter, SO much can be accomplished in such a short time...if you “just
imagine” it.

A very special guest, Andrews County Sheriff Rusty Stewart, husband of Past
State President, TerrESA Stewart, provided an eye-opening presentation on
how to prepare for an Active Shooter
situation. We viewed a short video that
generated an energetic discussion on how to
best protect ourselves and our families in
case of such an emergency. It is imperative
that we all mentally prepare for any situation
and be vigilant of our surroundings at all
times, especially knowing where the “Exit
door” is located. Sincere Thanks, Rusty!

After lots of great eateries and shopping, Kelly Kinser treated us to a fun President’s party in her
suite on Saturday night. Unsure what time it ended, but so much fun was had visiting with our
State sisters. What a TREASURE they are!!

Sunday’s meeting was wonderful & lively, once again! The “hats of yesteryear” really made it
special.

September 2018

Barb Atkinson filled in for Drenda Wiley, as First Timer’s Chairman. Barb welcomed 2 members,
Ginny Wright, a Past Regional President from Arkansas, now in San Antonio, and Lis Noelke from
San Angelo. The two ladies were welcomed at our Sunday meeting, joined by their District sisters.
They have both added a wealth of knowledge and energy to their chapters and our State.

District XI will be hosting the November
State Board meeting and Holiday Fair in
Garland, Texas from November 11-12,
2018. “Just Imagine” what fun crafts and
gifts we’ll find. We will also be honoring
our Military with the “Million Thanks”
program. Our chapters will be writing a
total of 500 thank you cards, which will be
delivered to an organization in San
Antonio for distribution to various bases.

On a local level, one of San Antonio’s chapters is blessed
to now have 3 generations of ESA members. Kappa
Kappa #4238 just gained 2 members. The daughter of
Barbara Perales, Julia Leisk (formerly MAL), and Julia’s
daughter (DESA), Kennice Leisk, were pinned on August
7, 2018. We’re so excited to have them join us.

A note from the editor:

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this issue. It’s been a slow start for me! In the past three weeks,
I have unexpectedly changed jobs- a very good change that I am really happy about- and the transition
has taken a temporary toll on my free time and attention. I apologize. Last year’s editor, Lisa Zacchau,
left big shoes to fill- she gave me the gift of high aspirations. The submission deadline for each issue is
the 15th of each month, and beginning in October, new issues will be published on the first of the
following month. Photographs are wonderful! In the future, you can expect the look and feel of the
newsletter to become more reader-friendly as I master new software. I appreciate receiving your
submissions in Word format, or in the body of an email, rather than in pdf form. Please don’t hesitate to
contact me if you have questions.
