Types of Irish Folklore
Irish folklore is split up into four cycles, the mythology cycle, ulster cycle, fenian
cycle, and the historical cycle. These cycles are used to describe the type of
folklore that a particular story is.
Symbols
● The Symbols that were used in these stories
represented what was used to tell how the
character was or how they felt. Some of these
symbols were
● Death
● Beauty
● Wisdom
● Strength
● Courage
Themes
Dark - a lot of stories involved death or have a spell casted on
the character
Supernatural - Mostly used to as a way to show things like
death or bad luck
Royalty - used to show power and wealth, happiness and
beauty
Cultural Values
- Higher powers (kings, queens, princes, and princesses)
- In Irish folklore they value good and honest people. If someone did not think
you were good or honest bad things could happen.
- They also value listeners, people who don’t listen end up getting themselves
into serious trouble.
Archetypes
The characters are usually going through some sort of trouble.
Faced with a challenge that could haunt them forever.
Usually the decisions are based off of what is morally good.
