ESOL Handbook
2WELCOME
Welcome to the college
A message from the Programme Area Leader
This is the Course Handbook for the ESOL 16-18 programme. On
behalf of the Course Team I am delighted to have this opportunity to
warmly welcome you to Bradford College. Thank you for choosing to
study ESOL with us. I hope this is the start of your life-long
engagement with English Language.
Many students find that their time in the ESOL department is one of transformation - they begin the
year excited and enthusiastic, but perhaps with some fear. At the end of the programme they emerge
confident, skilled, and ready to take on the challenges of further study and the work world. At
Bradford College we know that the whole ESOL experience is at the heart of student success. That is
why, in addition to the actual teaching and learning experience, we have a friendly, supportive
atmosphere and we offer a wide range of additional personal support services which cater for all
individual needs.
It is your responsibility to familiarise yourself with the contents of this handbook, and make sure that
you use it as the first source of information and guidance on matters relating to your ESOL
programme and status as a student. This ESOL course is designed to meet the real life demands of
studying in the UK, and is structured to ensure that our students are well prepared for their chosen
careers. One of the most important elements of your success will be your commitment - as long as
you want to succeed, we are here to help you.
Our teaching methods and course syllabus are designed to efficiently help you bridge the gap
between what you have learned in your country, and what is needed to be successful in the UK
We hope you enjoy your time with us.

7 COURSE INFORMATION
Course Information
You will study 12 hours a week of ESOL. In your lessons you will practise all 4 skills:
Reading
Writing
Speaking
Listening
Course Hours ESOL: 12 hours a week
Course Aims ESOL: Term 1 Skills for Life exams Term 2 Life Skills
The programme is broken down as follows: 10 hours of General English, this includes Conversational
English and Pronunciation; reading different texts and writing for different purposes will prepare you
for the City & Guilds Speaking and Listening exam.
1 hour a week of Extensive Reading
1 hour of Academic English
1 hour of British Culture
Main exams (City & Guilds)
How you will study:
We believe that your lessons should be communicative and give you as many opportunities to speak
in class as possible and to work in pairs and groups. We believe that pair work and group work are
not only enjoyable but also an essential part of the learning process. We expect you to contribute by
speaking English as much as possible in class and not using your own language unless absolutely
necessary. You should also speak English to your classmates and to all members of the ESOL team.
Tutorial
We will give you regular feedback on your progress in your tutorial so that you have a good idea of
your strengths and what you need to do to improve and achieve your learning goals. Your tutor and
your Progress Coach will help you write your targets on your Individual Learning Plan (ILP) which is
recorded on e-tracker.
Cover
If a teacher is absent we will always do our best to find someone else to cover the class.
Unfortunately, this will not always be possible, especially at short notice, or at times when there are
a lot of classes running. If we cannot find someone to cover the class we will either combine your
class with a group at a similar level, or give you self-study to do. Do not leave the college.

8 COURSE INFORMATION
Attendance & Disciplinary Process
You will be asked by your tutor to read and sign this document.
You must attend regularly and punctually. Our minimum attendance is 95%. We will check
your attendance every 2 weeks to see if it is high enough. Students must email or telephone
the college (01274433333) when they are not able to attend, i.e. in case of sickness.
However, if you know in advance that you will be absent, you must ask for authorisation.
If there are problems with your attendance, we may start the disciplinary process with you.
If you receive a bus pass from the college, we will report all absences to the Student
Services Team. This may mean that if you are eligible for a bus pass you may not receive this
for the following week. Please note this includes absences from Functional Skills Maths
classes.
What we expect from you:
To attend at least 95% of your lessons, including Maths
To let your teachers know if you are going to be absent - please email your tutors
To come to class on time
To treat your teachers and other students with respect
To listen to your teachers and classmates
To do your homework on time
If you don’t do this, we will have to begin the disciplinary process
with you.
Disciplinary process:
Informal warning from your tutor. This will be recorded in the tutor file and will be
written or oral.
Formal written warning from your tutor or Progress Coach – this will be a letter.
Formal meeting with your tutor and the Programme Area Leader. At this meeting,
you will have to sign a learning contract.
Withdrawal from the course.
I agree that my behaviour is important and I know how I need to act as a student at
Bradford College.
