Be the Change

Sustainable Shelves
In all libraries, outdated, unwanted, or damaged books must be re-
moved or weeded from the collection on a regular basis. But what do
we do with these materials? A large portion of these items are given to
the Friends of the Largo Library to sell in the bookstore and at bi-annual
book sales, but the amount of weeded materials in addition to generous
book donations can be overwhelming to our Friends volunteers. This
year, Largo Public Library will take part as an early adopter in the new
Sustainable Shelves program through the book vendor Baker & Taylor.
In this program, the library can get paid directly by the book vendor for
weeded materials. The vendor determines which books have value and
which don't, pays the library for them and then picks up all weeded ma-
terials, reselling the ones they can, and recycling the ones with no value.
This resale and recycle method of materials maintenance keeps books in
the hands of readers and out of landfills. In addition, the money earned
from the resale of these books through both the Friends of the Library and the Sustainable Shelves program helps
support library programs, services, and initiatives. As an early adopter of this process, Largo Public Library hopes to
take a sustainable step forward while maintaining a book collection that is relevant to the community.

Greater Largo Library Foundation

In the last month, The Greater Largo Library Foundation has been busy with two
successful online events. Our first ever Art Hops Virtual Auction was so much fun!
It was a week long, action packed auction, with new items released every day and
many final-day bidding battles. Congratulations to all of our winners! Here is just
one participant, Dr. Ronald Tucker, who won the men's bicycle donated by Regions
Bank in the LaBelle Plaza, Clearwater. Thank you to all of our donors, participants,
and winners! We also had a successful Giving Tuesday Now on May 5th. Thanks
to the generosity of our community, we were able to reach our One Day, One
Thousand Dollars campaign goal! We are so proud of our ability to support the
programs and services at the Largo Public Library, and we're so happy to stay
connected with all of you. Please visit the Greater Largo Library Foundation's web-
site for updates on our next virtual auction, or to donate to our on-going Library
Champions giving campaign: www.gllf.org.
