House System

Each Class base is made up of one Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and a Year 6 class, known
as either Oak, Chestnut or Sycamore. Children are encouraged to collect leaf points for
outstanding academic contributions and exemplary behaviour. When children receive ten
leaf points they collect a magnetic leaf according to which house they belong to. They
place their leaves on one of the three huge trees which reside in the front entrance
area. This provides the children with the incentive to work together as a team.

School Daily Routines

The school day begins as the gates open at 8:30am and children enjoy the daily mile before they
go to their classes, after leaving coats and bags in the cloakroom and lunch boxes on the trolley.

The register is taken at 8:50am and is closed at 9:00am. If your child arrives after this time, they
will need to register at reception using the touch screen terminal. Our office staff will help if
needed.

The school day ends at 3:30pm. For the first term, to support the children, the Year 3 teachers
escort them out of the school building to meet parents/carers. All Year 3 classes will wait on
the grassed area beside the green metal fence. As your child becomes more independent you
may wish for them to walk down the path to meet you. You and your child can make this
decision when you feel ready. If a child cannot find his/her parents we tell them to come back
into school through the main entrance doors to tell office staff or a teacher.

Breaks Children have one short break in the morning and a longer break at
lunchtime. The school kitchen provides a tuck shop in the hall each morning
break time that sells toast, crumpets, tea cakes, fruit and drinks. Children do
not need to bring more than 50p to spend at the tuck shop. Children may also
bring a healthy snack from home to be kept in their drawer until break time.
We encourage all children to bring a water bottle filled with water. They can
be refilled at various water fountains.

Parent/Teacher Association

We have a thriving PTA which organises
many social events for both parents and
children as well as raising vital funds for
school equipment.
Please seriously consider getting involved
and/or supporting their events. In recent
years they have funded our amazing
trimtrail and many other smaller projects
that make our school an even better place
to be!
They can be contacted at [email protected]

Each month, names are read out in assembly and children are given a handwritten invitation to
attend afternoon tea in our lovely Burrow room with Mrs. Norton.

Every week Play Leaders nominate children for demonstrating our Christian values during
lunch time, the nominated children get an invitation to join ‘top table’ on Friday.

Weekly Commendation Assemblies celebrate and recognise children's achievements.

Any medicine must be brought into school by an adult and given to the office staff. In order for
medicine to be administered, a consent form must be completed and signed by the
parent/carer.

Please note that in the interests of safety no cars are to be driven onto the school
grounds, unless prior consent has been given by Mrs Norton. Use of the car park is
permitted after 5:30pm for collection from after school clubs.

Special Education
Needs and Disabilities

(SEND)

A message from Mrs Ravenhall:
‘I am Mrs Ravenhall and I am the SEND coordinator working
closely along side Mrs Webb.’

We are an inclusive school and our aim is to work in partnership with parents to ensure all
our children achieve their potential. Children are supported in school by an experienced,
well-trained team of learning support assistants.
I am a full time non class-based SEN teacher and provide a further level of support.

A broad range of agencies are regular visitors to our school and they include; speech and
language therapists, occupational therapists, an educational psychologist and the Specialist
Teaching Services. We monitor the progress and development of all children very closely
and regularly. Children who are not making expected progress are picked up through
Achievement Team Meetings within year groups. In this meeting, a discussion takes place
concerning children who are experiencing difficulty and what further support can be given
to aid their progression. Following this meeting, if a child is provided with extra support,
parents will be informed.

Class teachers and a member of the SEND team meet with parents and children on the SEND
register termly to review progress and set targets.

Infant schools will have already shared information about any children coming to us with
SEND needs prior to your children joining us.

If you wish to contact us for more inforation,
please use the following email address: [email protected]

and mark your mail for the atention of Mrs Ravenhall

Values

As a Church of England School we hold the values of courage, creativity, peace, trust,
forgiveness, justice, thankfulness, compassion, friendship, hope, truthfulness, humility,
generosity, respect, reverence, wisdom, perseverance, service and responsibility very close
to our hearts. You are welcome to be part of our school family if you have any faith or none.
Each half term we choose one of the values written above to base our assemblies on and
use them in other discussions with the children.

Communication

We believe a successful school is run on the basis of a partnership between us all. We are
very keen to involve you in the progress of your child and in the wider life of the school. We
offer the following to help keep lines of communication open:

· Open afternoons throughout the year where parents can look at children’s learning
with their child.

· Weekly school bulletins available on line and emailed directly to parents (sign up at
http://www.biltonjuniorschool.co.uk/bulletin).

· Partnership progress meetings during the Autumn and Spring Terms
· An end of year written report
· A Summer term Open Day/Evening
· Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher ‘drop in’ afternoons.
· School website & facebook regularly updated with news and information
· Text 2 Parents used to for reminders or emergency notices
· Other school information emailed directly to parents who register
· Parents are always welcome in school to offer help and support for trips or to hear

readers.

Helping in school

We welcome parental help in school – on trips, during practical activities, hearing reading
etc. All parents who help in school and work away from the direct supervision of the class
teacher are required to obtain DBS clearance. Applications are now processed on-line.
Information can be obtained from the office relating to this.

We are really pleased to be able
to offer a Home School suppor
Worker, a message fom Mrs
Hodgson:

‘I am Mrs Hodgson and I am the Home/School Support Worker at Bilton C of E Junior School.
My role is to offer support to our pupils and their families; this may vary from you needing
information about free school meals, to a child needing someone to talk to about issues that
may be worrying them, or working with families where punctuality and/or attendance is an
issue, to offering parenting support through the Triple P parenting program. I also attend
and run many of the Early Help Meetings in school and support families
through this process.

If there is any area where you feel you or your child may need any level of support, please
do not hesitate to contact me (by popping into the school office, calling the main school
telephone number, or emailing me ([email protected]). If I am
not able to help personally, I can usually sign-post to someone who can!’

You do not need to wait for September to contact me!
Once you know your child will be joining us at BJS, please do get in touch

if there is any way you feel I may be able to help.

Free School Meals

Many of your children will have benefited from the
Universal Free School meals available to children up to
the point where they leave Year 2. As I am sure you
will know, this particular service does not extend into
Year 3 and beyond, however, you may still be entitled
to Free School Meals for your child/children so we
would strongly urge you to check your eligibility by
either calling the Free School Meals office on 01926
359189 or looking at the website
www.warwickshire.gov.uk/freeschoolmeals

Contacting the Office

The office is open between 8:30am and 4:30pm each day. There are occasions when the
answer-phone is in operation to enable administration and financial matters to be
completed on very busy days. Please leave a message, and if necessary we will phone you
back as quickly as possible.

Absence

If your child is absent please let us know the reason on the first day of absence.
A telephone call will keep us informed and ensure that we do not bother you with
unnecessary letters, texts or phone calls if your child is away. Please phone the school
between 8:30am and 9:30am on the day of absence to leave a message with one of our
office staff.
Alternatively please email the school on: [email protected] advising why
your child is absent.

Leave of Absence

Leave of absence will be considered in exceptional circumstances and will be
considered on a case by case basis. Application forms are available via the school
office and must be completed for all requests for leave of absence.

Pocket Toys

Children may bring a small inexpensive toy to play with at
break and lunch time. These are the children’s responsibility
and should be pocket sized to fit into their desks or pockets.

Lunchtime

Lunchtime for the children is arranged in three sittings, where
children who are having a school meal can sit with children
who are eating packed lunch. The children go into lunch with their ‘House’ encouraging all ages
to mix together and form bonds outside their year group. The ‘sittings’ rotate so that children
are either on 1st, 2nd or 3rd sitting. If children are on 1st sitting then they wash their hands and
head to the dining hall for a prayer. Children who are on 2nd/3rd sitting wait to see their
class\house called by seeing a named card.

School Meals

School meals currently cost £2.35 per day and dinner money
may be paid either weekly or half termly on Monday morning’
Using an online system.

For those paying by cash or cheque dinner envelopes will be
issued for each half term and should be
used only for dinner money. Our meals are freshly prepared each day on site and include a range
of healthy options including fresh fruit and vegetables for children to choose from. Each week the
children look at a menu and choose their meals in advance.

Packed lunches

Please ensure that your child’s lunch box is clearly labelled with the their name and class. Water
is provided, but an additional drink may be brought in using a non-breakable container. If
providing yogurts or puddings please enclose your own cutlery for your child to use.

48 hours’ written notice is required to transfer from packed lunches to school dinners and vice
versa. Verbal requests cannot be accepted and unfortunately you will be charged for meals
booked where no written notice has been received to change to packed lunches.

Children leaving and/or returning
to school during the school day.

Pupils leaving and/or returning to school for medical appointments etc. need to report to the
school office and the parent collecting them will need to register them ‘off site’ using the touch
screen terminal in reception. This is essential in the event of a fire so that we have a clear picture
of who is on the school site.

Parents are kindly requested not to park in the school car park but to park with consideration for
local residents and the safety of all our children in nearby streets and not on the yellow zig-zag
Lines. Please do not ‘drop and go’ on the yellow zigzags.

Travelling to school

We encourage our children to walk to school wherever possible.
In partnership with Sainsbury’s and the Fighting Cocks Public House, parents are welcome to park
at either venue before or after school so that parents and pupils can make the remainder of their
journey on foot.

There is cycle storage at the main entrance for children who may wish to cycle to school either
with their parents or, as they get older, on their own. Bikes/scooters should be locked during the
day and are stored at own risk.

Home Learning

The school has a Home Learning policy and children are set
home learning tasks each week. Parents are provided with
a half termly or termly list describing the home learning and
indicating completion dates. This information is also posted
on our website.

Home/School Reading

Your child will bring home a reading book chosen by them from a range of books linked to their
reading age. They may also bring home their library book. They may also be given a reading
recording log and asked to complete this as a strategy to promote and monitor high levels of
reading engagement.

Equipment

To promote further independence children are encouraged to bring their own equipment.
Children need a pencil case, pencils, coloured pencils, rubber, ruler and a glue stick.
Children do not need a mobile telephone in school.

School Uniform * Please label ALL items of uniform*

We want our children to feel proud of our school and believe that school uniform reflects and
reinforces the importance of being part of a community. The school colours are bottle green, grey
and white.

Grey trousers, shorts, skirt or pinafore, white collared shirt and school tie, green
BJS sweatshirt, green BJS cardigan or green v-necked sweater. White polo shirts and
striped or green check dress may be worn in the warmer weather. Small green,
white or black hair band or bobbles.

Flat heeled, comfortable black shoes.

P.E. Kit:

· black shorts with elasticated waist [not cycling shorts]
· plain white T‐shirt
· black or white pumps for indoor or outdoor use
· trainers for outdoor use
· optional navy blue BJS jogging suit available from the school*. If bought elsewhere it needs

to be plain navy blue.
· a bobble to tie up long hair

Please label all your child’s P.E. kit and provide a small, labelled bag to store it in. P.E. kit needs
to be kept in school from Monday to Friday and taken home regularly to be washed.

* Sweatshirts, cardigans, jogging suits and ties may be obtained through the School office.

As you can imagine lost property can be an issue with
420 children in school, please name all uniform clearly.

Jewellery

For safety reasons jewellery is not to be worn, with the exception of stud earrings. During P.E.
lessons, earrings should be removed but if ears are newly pierced they may be taped over
(parents to supply). Children must be responsible for removing their own ear studs and
keeping them safe during P.E.

Lost Property

Lost property is stored in a box, outside but under the veranda round the back of school. Please
mark all of your child’s property clearly with his/her name and class. Any un-named items not
collected by the end of each term will be recycled.

Behaviour in school

Each class enjoys drawing up their own class charter at the
start of each academic year and reviews it regularly during
the year as excellent behaviour is very important to us.
As a school, we find that praise and recognition of a ‘job
well done’ works far better than constant sanctions however there are times when positive
discipline measures are required.

Our strong emphasis on pastoral support, peer to peer support and Christian Values together with
our tree themed house system and associated ‘leafpoints’ is effective in promoting positive
outcomes and a strong sense of community and collective responsibility.

A detailed behaviour and discipline policy is available on request. It should be noted that all
incidents of poor behaviour are logged on a database, in order to be able to print reports and
share the information with parents or subsequent schools. As part of our policy we use a Friday
after school detention as a deterrent in serious circumstances.

Concerns

In almost all circumstances, concerns are resolved quickest by the child with the class teacher.
Please contact us using the following school email address:

[email protected]

Alternatively a telephone call to the office can also be made and your child’s teacher will return
your call as soon as possible. In rare cases, you may wish to escalate the issue and contact the
Phase Leader who is also a member of the Senior Leadership Team with full delegated authority.
In exceptional circumstances, the Deputy Head, (or Head teacher in her absence) may be
contacted, who will then also investigate why the issue has reached this stage and not been
resolved sooner. The office can then be contacted to request details of further escalation to the
Governors if necessary.

Charges

Under present legislation there is no obligation for parents to make a financial contribution.
However, it must be recognised that the financial arrangements for trips are only as strong as the
received contributions. No child will be excluded from any such trip because of inability to pay
and we readily welcome any information that could help us to help you.

In Years 4 and 5 we run residential trips as an option for children. Parents need to be aware that
a charge will be made for these two optional trips – at present they cost about £20 and £250
respectively. School does have a more detailed policy with regard to charges.

Before/ After School provision

‘The Haven’ operates on site to provide wrap-around care.
Their hours are 8:00am to 8:40am each day and then 3:30pm to 6:00pm Monday - Thursday,
3:30pm - 5:30pm on Friday

We can be contacted on 01788 810675 or [email protected]
This is a new adventure for us at BJS. More information will be available soon.

A Mentor Programme has been running
successfully for a number of years and has been
invaluable to the settling in process for new Year 3's.
The older children receive training to become
mentors and the Mentor Programme consists of each
Year 5 child acting in the role of mentor to a Year 3
child.

Year 5 children meet with their mentee on induction
day and will then have a half hour session weekly
once term starts in September. The purpose of these
sessions is to provide peer support to Year 3's with
the transition to Junior school.

There are no outsiders @ BJS - everyone is welcome
