The essay of the above Mind Mapping :
I agree that students should be required to take classes outside of their major fields of
study in order to graduate. Although it could be argued that classes do not contribute to the
career goals of students and furthermore require investments of additional time and tuition, I
contend that there are three important reasons for the requirement.
First, exposure to a variety of subjects provides a common core of knowledge for all
educated people. If students limited their courses to their major fields of study, they would not
have broad view of the world. Their perspective would be very narrow, and they would not be
able to exchange views with others whose education had been limited to the study of a different
field. Taking courses many subjects allows the free flow of information and ideas among
members of educated society.
Second, many students entering college are unsure of their career goals. By selecting
courses in a variety of fields during the first two years, students have an opportunity to
experiment and learn about several career possibilities. Many students find their life’s work in
a class that they never would have taken if they had not been required to do so. Furthermore,
many people change careers several times during their lives. Early exposure to many subjects
in college can be valuable when a career ends, either by choice and circumstance. Alternative
explored during college could be pursued long after graduation.
Finally the amount of leisure time available is expanding. Past generations worked longer
hours. Moreover the life expectancy did not afford as many people with the possibility of a long
retirement. Today however a large number of college graduates can expect to enjoy several
decades of recreational activities after they have stopped working full time. The interests that
they may have developed during their college years as a result of taking a wide range of courses
could be helpful in making choices for a happy retirement.
To summarize there is more education than merely training for a career. By taking course
outside of their major fields, students prepare not only for successful professions but also for
lives that include intellectual exchange with other educated people and the pursuit of interests
outside of the work place.
