Y year
1945-1956

Module 1:
Introduction to Science, Technology, and Society

Year 1945-1946, the surrendering of the Germans but not the
Japanese. The Japanese vowed to fight till death during WW2, it was
a choice made by the American forces to use atomic bombs
because of the threat that the war will extend till 1946 a threat to
millions of lives. Science during this time was utilized to be a source
of mass destruction and death, but also utilized for means to end the
war. The usage of science and its knowledge holds power to start
and end the normality of our lives. Francis Bacon mentioned that the
real test of scientific knowledge is its utilization, the presidents and
scientists that have power to use scientific advancements is
dependent on their moral character and conscience to use it for
what is right.

There is still a wide area of things undiscovered in scientific
knowledge, as a university student it is up to me to utilize the
knowledge I received with education, being part of society in the
future means applying what I have learned in university and it is to
use it for the advancement of society towards something
sustainable and will not cause destruction to others.

Z zealots
Module 1:
Introduction to Science, Technology, and Society

A Zealot is defined as “a person who is fanatical and
uncompromising in pursuit of their religious, political, or other
ideals”. In module 1 religion was described to be the basis of
knowledge before the scientific revolution. It was said that the basis
of knowledge was the scriptures that contained the all
-encompassing wisdom from gods and wise people of the past and
other things discovered were considered irrelevant to society,
economics, and politics. If there is still a person to this day that
declares religions and its teachings to be the only explanation, they
are a Zealot, those that embrace ignorance because God does not
have an answer for it rather than admitting ignorance.

The generation today is a mixture of people who have an
integral belief in scientific knowledge and the older generation
would have some that greatly believe in religion. Traditionally, the
Philippines is a religious country, it is offensive to call people that
they are a zealot, but it is a great task to persuade someone who
does not want to believe other things that they want to believe. As a
university student I have a big platform as a youth, from the
knowledge I received with education it is easier to convince those
that are anchored to their religious belief to trust scientific
knowledge.
