July RSVP Newsletter

July RSVP Newsletter

Greetings from New Hanover RSVP! July/August Newsletter

Getting To Know Program Manager, Teresa Nelson!

I wanted to share a little about myself in this newsletter. Some things you may know, some you may
not. I have been serving seniors for over 25 years in many different areas. I have been a caregiver, in home
aide, Medicare Counselor, Options Counselor, advocate for seniors in long term care, manager for home
makers, Medicaid auditor, Adult Day Care Director, Senior Center Director, Executive Director of Senior
Services, and a CPR/FA instructor just to mention a few. I hold three degrees all in Gerontology and I am a
Certified Dementia Practitioner.

If you haven’t guessed yet I love seniors and I want to help make a better place for them. I have a
passion for working with seniors with Alzheimer’s and Dementia. It is my hope and prayer that one day we
will have a cure for this disease.

I volunteered for 8 years educating people on Alzheimer’s disease and conducting caregiver support
groups for family members. I love to volunteer and hope that I encourage others to volunteer and give back
to our community. I can’t think of anything more rewarding than helping others. Finally, I am so inspired by
the volunteers that serve here in New Hanover County. You are truly amazing the time you give and the
many talents you have to share with the community. Thank you for serving we could not do our job without
you. Remember these amazing words from Mother Teresa.

Getting to Know Program Coordinator, Allie Hernandez!

Allie began her career working as a Counselor for a local treatment center in New Hanover County for three
years. Moving forward, she became a Family Advocate & Health & Nutrition Coordinator for the New Hanover
County Head Start Program, where she enjoyed building relationships with not just the children, but their ex-
tended families. Allie is passionate about family and community support, as well as positive relationship
building at all ages. She hopes to build relationships that benefit the population here at the Senior Resource
Center, while promoting the growth of volunteerism in New Hanover County.

Allie is a New Jersey Native and a graduate of East Carolina University where she earned a
Bachelor’s Degree in Rehabilitative Services. Allie recently graduated from the Masters of
Educational Leadership, Advocacy and Policy Program at UNC-Wilmington. When Allie is
not working, she enjoys spending time with her husband and their two dogs.
