Ken waited on the bench near the bridge, as he had been instructed. The wind blew straight across the
river, sharp as a razor, and he had to pull his overcoat closer about him.
He went over his instructions in his mind. The agent would appear at four o'clock. He would chat to him for
a while, after which he would get up, leaving his newspaper behind. The plans would be fastened inside.
A distant clock began to strike the hour. As if from nowhere, a man appeared and sat down beside Ken,
placing his newspaper on the seat between them. He was thin and middle-aged, and seemed in need of a
good meal. He bore no resemblance to Ken's idea of a successful spy. His conversation confined to trivial
observation about the weather, was painfully uninteresting.
A few minutes later he got up and continued on his way. Ken picked up the paper which lay on the bench
as if he wanted to look at the news. He was excited to see the plans, pinned to the center page. At the

Coral looks like a kind of rock, but it is not rock. Coral is made up of the skeletons of many small ocean
animals that have died. Most coral is white, pink or red. Coral as black as coal is found in the Indian Ocean.
This coral was a favorite ornament for rulers.
In Italy, many people make their living from coral. Some of these people fish for living. Others work in the
crafts, making beautiful rings and other fine jewelry.

be used as jewelry. Other kinds of coral are used to build roads. This coral is scooped up from the ocean

The Great Wall of China winds across the country like a giant stone snake. It is 1,500 miles long. The wall
crosses mountains and rivers. It reaches from the Ocea on the east to the desert on the west. The Chinese
built their wall more than 2,000 years ago. They worked on it for hundreds of years. The Chinese wanted to
keep out their enemies.
At the bottom, the wall is 25 feet wide. At the top, it is about 15 feet wide. The sides of the wall are made
of stone and brick while the inside is filled with earth. Parts of the wall rises as high as a three-story
building. Placed 100 yards apart are tall towers. Lookouts could stand in the towers to watch for the
enemies approaching. The road on top of the wall is wide enough for two wagons to pass.
If we were to build such a wall now, we would use modern machines. But the Chinese had to build the wall
by hand. If the wall were in our country, we would reach from Chiang Rai to Prajuabkireekhan. The Great
Wall of China is the longest wall ever built.

Tommy had a strange idea of fun. His favorite way of amusing himself was to annoy other people.
But the day of the fire was the day he learnt his lesson.
In some parts of the town where Tommy lived, there were fire alarms in the streets. You had to
break the glass and turn a handle; that was all, and then the firemen came to put out fire. He used to hide
behind a wall at the corner of the street and laugh as the firemen discovered that there was no fire and got
back angrily to their engine and drove off.
Tommy told some of his friends at school about the fun he was having, and the result was that
there soon boys all over the town who was about starting false alarm of fires.
In the holidays, Tommy liked to do chemistry experiments in his bedroom. One day there was an
accident. He was using a burner to heat some liquid, when suddenly he knocked it over, and in a few
moments his bed was on fire. Tommy saw immediately that firemen would be needed to put the fire out.
At top speed, he ran downstairs and out of the house and along the street to the corner where fire alarm
stood. There for a moment, his heart stopped beating : it was broken!
Tommy turned to look back at his house. Black smoke was beginning to climb up from his bedroom
window. He stood by the fire alarm, not knowing what to do. It seemed that his home was about to be
burnt down-perhaps because of a trick which some other foolish boy had learnt from him!
At the sound of a clanging bell his fear changed suddenly to hope. Yes, it really was the fire engine

Maize is also known as a corn. It is a very important food crop because it is rich in carbohydrates. Before
the cobs are ripe, they can be eaten boiled, steamed or roasted. The ripe grains are used for making cakes
or porridge. Other than these, maize is also an important food for livestock like poultry, pigs and cattle.

Dear Marcie,
Hello from Hawaii! The weather here is really warm and sunny! We are visiting my Dad’s friend now, but
we went to the mountains to camp last week. Yesterday I got up early, played tennis with my mom and
then swam in the afternoon. Today I eat lunch at the beach café’ and write some postcards to my friends. I
have lunch at Rick’s café’, the same restaurant where we went yesterday. The food is delicious! I sleep late
every day? Why? It’s vocation!
