Greetings to our club sisters, guests, and honorees. Welcome to the 46th annual Founders Day celebration. Every year we come together to celebrate the seven founders of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Womens Club Inc. They strived to make a way for professional women who wanted to make a difference in their community, so that we can now address the social ills affecting our young people today. As we celebrate years of community service in New Haven and surrounding neighborhoods we have selected honorees that have demonstrated all of the values that we hold as an organization. This year women and men have many accomplishments pertaining to business or profession while giving back to their community through advocacy. I am deeply humbled to have been elected to serve as the president of the Elm City Youth Club. Thank you for celebrating with us this evening. Best regards, Leighla-Ann Lowndes Elm City Youth Club President

March 30th, 2022 To the Elm City NANBPWC and 2022 Founders’ Day Award recipients, On behalf of Governor Lamont and myself, I would like to express our sincere gratitude for the work of the Elm City National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Club in uplifting businesses across the City of New Haven and the State of Connecticut. The work of the Elm City Club and each of its members directly aligns with the priorities of our administration, in ensuring equitable opportunities for all small businesses; particularly Black women-owned businesses. As Chair of the Governor’s Council on Women and Girls, gender parity, diversity, and inclusion in the workforce is paramount to our mission. Lift Ev ’ry Voice and Sing Lyrics by James Weldon Johnson Verse One: Lift every voice and sing Till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of Liberty; Let our rejoicing rise High as the listening skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us, Facing the rising sun of our new day begun Let us march on till victory is won. Verse Two: Stony the road we trod, Bitter the chastening rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, Have not our weary feet Come to the place for which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered, Out from the gloomy past, Till now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast. Verse Three: God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who has brought us thus far on the way; Thou who has by Thy might Led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee, Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy hand, May we forever stand. True to our God, True to our native land.

Dear National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Club Incorporated, I have had the pleasure of being a part of the Elm City Youth Club for six years now, and it has made me grow so much as a young woman. Not only have I learned how to conduct myself in a business environment, I have also been able to help my community as well. I am so honored that I have learned what it means to take on a leadership role in a club that means so much to me. Thank you for allowing me to receive this award so that I may further my education and apply all of the things that I’ve learned over the years. Sisterly, Leighla-Ann Lowndes Elm City Youth Club President

“While it is the responsibility of each individual to make the most of his or her life it is the responsibility of the larger community to provide the conditions that encourage success, a healthy, stable environment, and opportunities for educational and economic achievement” I feel that this specific excerpt from the NANBPWC, Inc. ‘Who We Are’ Statement resonates with my identity. As I have shared with you, I grew up in a South Indian village. However, I did not have the space to explain that as a result, community has remained central to my identity and guided my endeavors. So, as I think about the ideals that have shaped the NANBPWC, Inc —and inextricably—the Elm City Club, I am overjoyed to see our common concern for the success and wellbeing of the collective. As a future educator, I recognize that I will have a direct role in “[providing] the conditions that encourage success” in our community, and hope to bring honor to the late Margaret S. Watley and the Elm City Club. Once again, I cannot express enough the gratitude I hold for the Elm City Club’s generous scholarship. I hope to use such funds to finance my education at Yale University in the fall. Thank you, Tenzin Dhondup Dear Elm City Club, I am so grateful and honored to be the recipient of the generous Margaret S. Watley Scholarship! In writing this, I continue to reflect on the NANBPWC, Inc. core values and beliefs. Specifically, from the following: Margaret S. “Daniel, puedo ayudarte,” I managed. He looked bewildered as I offered my help to him in Spanish. During my time as a teacher’s assistant for a fourth-grade class, one student —Daniel—only spoke Spanish and sat quietly in class. We were learning division as I attempted to build a bridge between our two languages, meeting halfway where I could instruct him. Though stuttering as I struggled for coherence, I had realized why I felt so fulfilled in that moment. It was because, in my early education, I was Daniel. Only speaking Tibetan, I was left behind as I sat quietly in class. This was because I grew up in South India on a Tibetan agrarian village. So as a result, I was pushed from one ESL class to another with teachers that pushed me aside. So, I felt fulfilled because I was finally able to be the person I never had for someone else. In persevering through my language barriers, I have found purpose in pursuing educational equity. Through student-teaching, being a representative for my town’s Board of Education, and creating a successful tutoring service at my school, I’ve realized that my passions lie in teaching. As a future educator, I hope to take my experience to create classrooms that celebrate America’s great diversity and young minds. More importantly to me, I hope to create classrooms where no student is left behind on the account of their race, ethnicity, gender, or class. Margaret S. While no one is a stranger to the violence that occurs in the New Haven area, perhaps no one knows the impact it has on families and the community better than Nakia Dawson-Douglas, who is a Intake Specialist for The Palliative Care Service at Smilow Cancer Hospital. In addition to her role as Intake Specialist for Palliative Care, she is the Founder and President of the Bereavement Care Network, Inc. (BCN), a non-profit organization that assists families of homicide due to gun violence in New Haven. A lifelong resident of New Haven, Nakia’s passion for the work she does in the community derived sadly from her own experience, as her family member and close friend were both victims of homicide. Understanding that many families do not have the finances to pay for funeral costs, as they may not have life insurance and the deaths are unexpected, BCN reaches out to these families to assist them where they are in need. BCN consists of 26 staff who aim to provide families with emotional support and connections to various resources. Most of the funding for these resources come from fundraisers, or directly out of pocket of BCN staff. BCN also works closely with all funeral homes in New Haven and the surrounding areas to aid in bridging the gap with families. “I have been where these families are and have felt what they feel. After serving as a bereavement coordinator with another organization, I knew that there was a greater need out there and that I needed to do more to help these families,” said Nakia. In her role with The Palliative Care Service at Smilow Cancer Hospital, Nakia handles new patient referrals, setting up appointments for patients, and making sure they receive their prescriptions. She sees patients come in with varying stages of disease, and cancers. This service focuses on symptom management and quality of life issues for adult patients with serious chronic, progressive, or terminal illnesses. Nakia explained that her work with BCN and the Palliative Care Service are intertwined. They both can deal with heartbreaking loss, although the causes are different. “My work in both spaces is aligned with what I believe is my God given purpose. I am here to help others when they need it most.” Nakia is also the wife of Marquis Douglas and the mother of two beautiful daughters India and Tayden. I would like to recognize the Elm City Adult Club and Northeast District for helping to provide opportunities for me to grow within my role as Second Vice President. Lastly, I would like to thank my mom Cynthia Farmer Streeter, my family, and my Elm City Adult Club Aunties who have instilled in me the importance of community service, and have always been heavily involved in impactful programming and community service. Even with being a member of the NANBPWC, Inc. for less than a decade I have had the greatest honor of meeting the most amazing club sisters. My family has always been heavily involved in community service, and I have always found it to be a blessing to help lift up, advance and enrich the lives of people within our communities. This work is truly an honor for me to be part of, and I am honored to receive the Club Appreciation Award. Sisterly, Sabrina Streeter Elm City Adult Club, Second Vice President Elm City Youth Club, Youth Leader Club Appreciation Award Sabrina Streeter Dear National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Club Incorporated, My name is Sabrina Rachelle Streeter and it is a true honor to accept the Club Appreciation Award. "LOVE AND RESPECT" YOUR GRANDMOTHER AND B&P SISTER MARY V. REDDISH (MVR-1) Congratulations on reaching this great milestone in your life. My Charge for you is to continue the challenge of going forth with your academic studies at the college of your choice, fulfilling your dreams and to become your very best self. As a long-time Member, past First Vice President and C0-President of the Elm City Youth Club for six years, I am proud that you have continued the great Legacy of the women in your family as Elm City Club members. May you continue to carry the torch of strength and commitment to help improve the life of others within the community. Your empathy and compassion for others through activities and participation in numerous community activities and programs are outstanding qualities that you have possessed since childhood. As you go forth in your future endeavors remember I will forever be in your corner and your 2nd greatest fan. My wish for you is years of success and happiness. To My Granddaughter, My Princess Makieya V. Randall (MVR-3)
Makieya, you're not just a sibling to me. But also a lifetime friend.. Love Eli Makieya, I love you sis. You're the best big sister anyone could ever ask for. Love Munch My Daughter My Legacy Makieya V. Randall (MVR-3) There are no words to describe how proud I am of you. I cannot believe that you are a Senior in high school, preparing to graduate and take your next step towards adulthood. Your journey thus far has been far from easy and definitely not for the weak at heart; but you have mustered the will and determination on a daily basis to keep going. This drive, this light in the darkness pushes everyone around you to keep going too. Being the oldest isn't easy and it comes with an entirely different level of responsibility. You've taken your role as the big sister of Elijah and Geremiah to heart from the day each of them came home. You are and always have been their confidant and protector. They may not show it or tell you all the time but they love you very much! You've been a member of the Elm City Club essentially your entire life. Dressing up in red and yellow to attend the fancy functions with mommy and grandma was your norm. You thought nothing of it and never doubted you would always have a ticket too. It was an honor when you officially joined the Youth Club and continued my legacy of B&P. Your commitment to NANBPWC, Inc. has shown thru as you have given selflessly to the club as a Member, First Vice-President and Co-President as well as to the community. I could list ALL of your accomplishments and fill this page with words but that still couldn't account for all of the love and admiration I have for you. I look forward to stepping into this next chapter of your journey with you and being there every step of the way. Aim for the stars or even if you happen to fall short, you still reach the moon. I Love You most! Mommy (MVR-2)
