CATHOLIC BISHOPS’ CONFERENCE Statement on the Four-Week National
OF
Lockdown in England and a Call to Prayer
ENGLAND AND WALES
Today, Parliament passed into law the Regulations governing
Our Lady of Walsingham - many aspects of activity in the whole of England until
- Pray for us. Wednesday, 2 December.

Statement from the Bishops’ Conference. These Regulations prohibit the gathering of people for
4th November 2020 communal worship in churches and other religious buildings.

http://catholicparish-kingslynn.org.uk Churches remain open and in use for activities other than
communal worship, including personal prayer and support for
those in need.

Funeral Masses and funeral services may be held. Please refer
to the Regulations (for places of worship see paragraph
18) and associated Guidance.

Despite profound misgivings it is important that we, as
responsible citizens, observe these Regulations, which have
the force of law:

“Remind them to be obedient to the officials in authority; to
be ready to do good at every opportunity” Titus 3:1

We do this in solidarity with so many others on whom are
being imposed restrictions which impact severely on their
lives and livelihoods.

It is also important to recognise that these Regulations are not
an attack on religious belief. However, they do demonstrate a
fundamental lack of understanding of the essential
contribution made by faith communities to the well-being,
resilience and health of our society.

At this difficult moment, we ask that, as a Catholic
community, we make full use of our churches as places of
individual prayer and sources of solace and help.

Daily Prayer

We must sustain each other in our patterns of prayer, joining a
national shared moment of prayer each day at 6.00pm, and
observing the Vigil of Christ the King (21 November) as a day
of prayer for the ending of this pandemic.

We encourage you all in your practical service and support of
each other and those around you in need.

This pathway of prayer and service is the royal road we are to
take as a gracious witness in our society today.

Dear All,
As ever I hope this finds you well.
Alas, it really does seem to be a case of “here we go again”. We have held
off as long as possible to announce arrangements for Church during
lockdown in the hope that all the petitioning of MPs and Parliament might
lead to an easing of the prohibition of public worship, but Parliament has
voted overwhelmingly in favour of the lockdown with 516 votes in favour
and 38 against. The matter of public worship did get plenty of coverage in
the debate, so I think all our efforts petitioning our MPs have made sure
that they, and Parliament as a whole, have plenty of awareness of the
strength of feeling. With great regret I therefore provide you with the
following information
Our Lady’s Church open for private prayer

• Our Lady’s Church will be open for private prayer daily (Monday to
Saturday) from 10.00am until 2.00pm. On Sundays the Church will
be open for private prayer from 9am – 11am.

• Entrance / exit will be via the side door (to ensure overall security of
the buildings) so please be careful about sanitising your hands after
handling the doors.

• Remember that the requirement for a face covering still applies. It
ensures that if you happen to be an asymptomatic carrier and cough or
sneeze, you will not be leaving the virus on surfaces for others to
touch

Live-streamed Masses
• On weekdays (Monday to Saturday) Mass will be livestreamed daily at

4.00pm.
• There will be an exception this Saturday (7TH November) when a Low

Mass in English will be streamed at 9.00am and a Sung Latin Mass
will be streamed at 3.00pm
• On Sundays Sung Mass will be live-streamed at 11.30am
• Vespers and Benediction will also be streamed on Sundays at 4.00pm
Parish Office
A “Covid secure” socially distanced Parish Office will be available in the
hallway of the Rectory on Fridays from 10.00am – 11.00am. Things such
as Mass request envelopes, collection monies and November lists can be
handed in and Mass cards can be signed here.
E-mail ministries
Deacon Shaun’s daily spiritual support e-mails will recommence tomorrow
(5th November)
My “Keeping in touch” e-mails will increase from weekly to two or three
times a week (largely dependant on how much news there is – not a good
time of year for “tales from the allotment”!)
Other matters
• Mass intentions will be published weekly on the Parish website -

• The blessing of graves will go ahead at 2.30 pm in Gayton Road

• The “4TthuNrsodvaeymbtearlk2s0”20will go ahead as planned via live-stream,

• You can continue to book tickets for Christmas Masses. Although

ending on 2nd December, we will continue optimistically taking bookings
until such time that we may be told that it is not possible. The plan for
Christmas Masses is:
CHRISTMAS EVE
o 12.00 noon, Holy Family: Vigil Mass (Low Mass).
o 4.00pm, Holy Family: Mass during the Night (“Midnight Mass”) with

blessing of the Crib.
o 7.00pm, Our Lady’s: Mass during the Night (“Midnight Mass”) with

blessing of the Crib. This Mass will be live-streamed.
CHRISTMAS DAY
o 8.00am, Our Lady’s: Mass of the Dawn (Low Mass).
o 9.30am, Holy Family: Mass during the Day.
o 11.00am, Our Lady’s: Mass during the Day. This Mass will be live

streamed.
It is not planned to open Holy Family Church during the lockdown. The
November lists from Holy Family have been taken to Our Lady’s, so they
will not be forgotten or neglected.
Finally, I would like to say that Fr Peter and I are both very grateful for
your generosity in the “Easter Offering” taken up last weekend (7 months
late!).
So now we have to brace ourselves and prepare to make sure we all do
what we can to support one another through (at least) the next four
weeks. Above all, remember that if you need someone to talk to or are
worried about something or someone, the whole clergy team are happy
to answer the phone to you (or call you back if we are busy and you have
to leave a message).
Take care and look after yourselves and those you live with (and those you
send e-mails to, and those you Skype or Zoom, and those you talk to on
the phone, and those you communicate with by texts!)
May Our Lady pray for you and may God bless you
Fr. Gordon.

be very valuable as a source of spiritual reading, though in some cases
some books are harder to draw nourishment from than others. In books
such as Psalms and Proverbs, our hearts are easily stirred to live a better
life and to strive for virtue through our relationships with God, neighbour
and self.

Beyond the Scriptures, there are also a great many spiritual writers who
can be of assistance to us in our adventure of salvation.”

May I suggest for today that you read and ponder on the following Gospel
Passage that Pope Francis talks about in his latest encyclical letter “Fratelli
Tutti” (On Fraternity and Social Friendship).

The Gospel Passage is from Luke 10: 25-37.

“Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. ‘Teacher,’ he said, ‘what must I
do to inherit eternal life?’ He said to him, ‘What is written in the law?
What do you read there?’ He answered, ‘You shall love the Lord your God
with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and
with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself.’ And he said to him,
‘You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live.’ But wanting
to justify himself, he asked Jesus, ‘And who is my neighbour?’ Jesus
replied, ‘A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into
the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving
him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and
when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite,
when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a
Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was
moved with pity. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured
oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to
an inn, and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii, gave
them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him; and when I come back,
I will repay you whatever more you spend.’ Which of these three, do you
think, was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?”
He said, ‘The one who showed him mercy.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Go and do
likewise.’”

My plan over the next few days is to quote some passages from Fratelli
Tutti in relation to this Gospel Passage so we can engage with this
scripture reading.

“When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, do not glean what is left; it
shall be for the sojourner, the orphan, and the widow. Remember that you
were a slave in the land of Egypt”
(Deuteronomy 24:21-22).

The call to fraternal love echoes throughout the New Testament:

“For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, ‘You shall
love your neighbour as yourself’”
(Galatians 5:14).

“Whoever loves a brother or sister lives in the light, and in such a person
there is no cause for stumbling. But whoever hates another believer is in
the darkness”
(1 John 2:10-11).

“We know that we have passed from death to life because we love one
another. Whoever does not love abides in death” (1 John 3:14).

“Those who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot
love God whom they have not seen”
(1 John 4:20).

Yet this call to love could be misunderstood. Saint Paul, recognizing the
temptation of the earliest Christian communities to form closed and
isolated groups, urged his disciples to abound in love “for one another and
for all” (1 Thess 3:12). In the Johannine community, fellow Christians
were to be welcomed, “even though they are strangers to you” (3 Jn 5). In
this context, we can better understand the significance of the parable of the
Good Samaritan: love does not care if a brother or sister in need comes
from one place or another. For “love shatters the chains that keep us
isolated and separate; in their place, it builds bridges. Love enables us
to create one great family, where all of us can feel at home… Love
exudes compassion and dignity”.

Petition to save Maira tops 3,600 signatures
Aid to the Church in Need (UK)
Petition to save Maira By John Pontifex (2 November 2020)

(ANC UK 2nd November 2020) So far, more than 3,600 people have signed
a Catholic charity’s petition calling on
http://catholicparish-kingslynn.org.uk Prime Minister Boris Johnson to grant UK
asylum to a 14-year-old Christian girl in
mortal danger in Pakistan.

Aid to the Church in Need (ACN), which supports persecuted
and other suffering Christians, launched the petition 10 days
ago on behalf of Maira Shahbaz.

The campaign comes in response to threats the Catholic girl
received from her former abductor, who accuses her of
apostasy, a crime punishable by death according to
extremists.
Mohamad Nakash Tariq, who kidnapped her, raped her
and forced her into prostitution, accuses Maira of
reneging on her marriage to him and on her conversion to
Islam.

She converted and married under threat of blackmail and
violence.

Maira’s nightmare began last April during coronavirus
lockdown when Mr Nakash abducted her at gunpoint close to
her home in Madina Town, near Faisalabad.

Nearly four months later, she escaped, told her story to police
and promptly went into hiding as a result of Mr Nakash’s
threats.
Maira’s family lawyer, Sumera Shafique, has reported
how people have gone house-to-house trying to hunt the
girl down.

In a public letter calling for the family to be granted asylum,
Ms Shafique has said: “Unless Maira and her family can
leave Pakistan, they will always be at risk of being killed.”

ACN (UK) is appealing for more people to sign the petition –
with a plan for it to be submitted at 10 Downing Street.

The Maira Shahbaz petition is central to this year’s
#RedWednesday campaign, promoting religious freedom and
an end to persecution.
#RedWednesday falls on 25th November and at 4.30pm
that day the Maira Shahbaz case will be featured at the
launch of ACN’s Set Your Captives Free: A Report on

active from home.

Share your ideas with other likeminded people.

On Saturday November 14 anyone interested in campaigning with CAFOD is
welcome to join our free online event – “Faith into action: building a better
world after the pandemic”. Whilst we recover and rebuild for the future, we
need to remember to tackle poverty, inequality, environmental degradation, and
the climate emergency. This will enable us to respond to Pope Francis’ call to
hear both “the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor” in Laudato Si. Our day of
discussion and workshops will look at the actions we can take to ensure we
continue to tackle poverty and the climate crises after the pandemic.

Guest speakers will include practical theologian Sam Ewell, climate
campaigners from across the world and CAFOD campaigners who will explain
how through campaigning with CAFOD you can help to turn Pope Francis’
words into reality.

ARMISTICE DAY, WEDNESDAY 11th NOVEMBER 2020

Dear All

As ever, I hope this finds you well.

Today marks the centenary of the burial of the “Unknown Soldier” in Westminster
Abbey. I have always found the war cemeteries of Northern Europe poignant
places to visit, especially wandering around and reading the ages of those buried
there. So many lives cut off before proper adulthood had even begun. But at least
those buried in these cemeteries have known burial places. So many men who
made the ultimate sacrifice lie unknown even today across these fields and their
close family never knew the whereabouts of their son’s / brother’s / uncle’s /
father’s last resting place. May they rest in peace.

It is starting to look as if we will not be allowed public worship until after 2nd December. One conversation I had
earlier this week was with somebody who said to me “They won’t change their minds. It would be another
u-turn”. Sadly, I think they are right. One impact of not having public worship is that we have no Sunday
collection and once again the parish finances suffer. As in the previous lockdown I will happily provide the
parish bank details to anyone who would like to move to giving by standing order. Another way that the parish
finances could receive a boost is that (so I am told by our treasurer) quite a lot of people who do give by standing
order have not signed a gift aid declaration. If you are a UK taxpayer. Gift Aiding means that we get back from
HMRC the tax you have paid on any monies you donate to the parish – 20p for very pound. If you pay tax and
have a standing order, but have not signed a Gift Aid declaration let me know and I will send you a proforma
declaration. Meantime donations in cash or by cheque can be dropped in to, or posted to us at The Catholic
Rectory, North Everard Street, King’s Lynn PE30 5HQ.

On the domestic front Queenie was very pleased to be fetched home from the Dogotel on Monday even though
she enjoyed her opportunity to run free in the paddock there during her stay. Unfortunately she had somehow
managed to tear off one of her dew claws (not the first time she has done something like that). It does not seem
to be troubling her one little bit, but a trip to the vet was needed to get antibiotics to make sure the exposed nail
bed does not get an infection while it heals. That was an expensive trip to Millhouse Veterinary Hospital on
Monday evening!!

But the thing that surprised me most about Monday evening was the number
of house windows I saw with Christmas lights and trees – nearly 7 weeks
before Christmas and nearly 3 weeks before we even reach the first Sunday
of Advent. Has anybody else noticed this? It wasn’t just one house, it was
several!! By the time Christmas actually arrives they will be so fed up with
the decorations they will probably want to take them down before the Queen
has addressed the nation.

Finally a reminder that Fr Peter will be giving the first of a new series of talks
– “The Thursday Talks” - tomorrow evening at 7.00pm via livestream on our
YouTube channel “Our Lady’s Kings Lynn”. During this lockdown period
that is also where you can find Mass at 4.00pm Monday to Saturday, and at
11.30am on Sundays.

Carry on taking good care of yourselves and those you live with.
