PARANORMAL
2 CRAFTSMASHIP

Mike and Joanne Blacker take us
though the process of making Ouija
boards for MHE

If you have been on a Most Haunted Experience event you may be
familiar with the Ouija board, what you may not know is that we make
all the solid wood boards you use.
It is a time consuming task however we believe it is a job that is worth
taking the time to do.
So where to start, I normally use planks of ash or pine, they come to
me as 3 meter long and 25cm wide. I cut the planks into sections and
then join them using a technique known as biscuit jointing. I find this
is the most stable way of producing a board that is not susceptible to
warping as a larger single piece of wood tends to be.
The biscuit is a small thin disk of wood inserted into the thin edge of

the plank which is then
glued into place and
clamped until dry.
Once the boards have
been joined I use a
random orbital sander to
ensure that each board is
completely flat, paying
particular attention to the

joint area.

After sanding the boards are wiped down
with a mildly damp cloth to ensure that there colour. It is important to

You may find that you rub away
some of the printed image, no
matter, it simply adds to the

individuality of each board,
something we feel is important.
You may also find the white paper

use a stencil.

We have a laser cut stencil as we make many
boards however rather than investing in a laser
cutter or buying a stencil of your own you could
simply free hand draw or write your characters on
the board.
The font is not important however we like to make
sure that they are easily readable as they are mostly

used in dimly lit areas and we require accuracy. Firmly fix the stencil to the board in the desired position, flexible
adhesive is a good idea as it produces a good seal around the lettering and helps prevent the paint bleeding under
the stencil. In this example you will see that we have used an acrylic based paint applied with a foam brush. Other
times we have used spray paint and paint pens, what ever is used it is important that it remains as flat as possible, too
many coats and it will begin to make the surface uneven which is far from desirable. When we have finished painting
and the paint has cured we can varnish the boards. I find gloss varnish gives the best results, we have trialed different
mixed and even enameling the boards but applying multiple thin coats of varnish has proven to provide the best
result. When this is dry the only thing left to do is polish up the board, this is to ensure that glasses or planchettes
glide nicely. That’s pretty much all there is to it, no spells, no incantations, the boards are a tool and as with any tool

they are only as dangerous as the person using them. Used with respect these boards are
often the most informative tool during an investigation.
A Ouija board would not be complete however without a
matching planchette. Also made from ash or pine they are
shaped using a template I created many years ago. The
shape is universally accepted as the common shape.
The wood is then sanded and varnished in the same
varnish as the board. I have trialed many
different methods of getting the planchettes
to glide on the board nicely, the varnishing
and polishing of the board is one thing

however I have also found the need for
something on the planchette. On the
example shown I have used 3 cushion
bearings. There we have it, your completed
Ouija board ready for another MHE Event,
it’s a labour of love and we love what we
do…..we also make great cake!
Mike and Joanne signing off and see you
soon!

3 MEET THE TEAM

You will have met many of the Most Haunted Experience
Team on events, but how well do you know them? In
each issue we will ask one of the team to say hello and
amongst other things tell you about their lives away from
Most Haunted Experience.

In this issue we asked Sue Thompson to take time out of
her busy schedule in the workshop and office.

My name is Sue Thompson, although some of the team call
me Granny as I am the oldest – 64 years young! I was born

This is especially important as due to the

Once you can be sure that as many of the

It is, as ever, important to remain objective when

Kelvedon Hatch - August 2016
Set in the middle of nowhere this secret bunker had
plenty of paranormal life. Taps from under thick
concrete floors and moving shadows. It was the
first time a spirit actually responded to me by
walking over to an object upon request, the
footsteps were soo clear, a moment I will never

And..

York Castle Museum - March 2020
Right at the side of Clifford's Tower, both buildings
beautiful when lit up at night, this location has
tonnes of paranormal activity to offer. I met with a
group of Hauntie friends for a night which I will
definitely never forget.
Our first vigil started in the cell area where we could

hear footsteps, a cat ball moved on its own off of a
ledge, there were bangs on the radiators all before
Stuart joined us. with Stuart then with us we had K2
hits on demand.
Our second vigil took us to the cell area off of the
main street layout and Karl joined us. After a bit of
dancing together to build up the energy, a spirit
responded and started to walk amongst, the walking
was very loud. Unfortunately the spirit would come into the actual cell itself, maybe
through fear of being locked in there again.
After years of investigating I think this is the first time I have danced in a prison cell
