Welcome to Aviation

You are joining Inmarsat Aviation at a very exciting time! For over 30 years Inmarsat has led
the development of inflight safety, voice and data services, and today we serve thousands of
installations on both commercial and business aircraft across the globe. Over the last five
years, recognising the market trends toward broadband connectivity, we have invested
substantial capital in the development of a unique blend of L-band, Ka-band and S-band
infrastructures, with the vision to offer aircraft connectivity solutions that meet the rapidly
increasing demand from the aviation industry for quality broadband – for any aircraft in any
geography.

Today, I’m pleased to say that these technical developments are moving into production
phase, and the Aviation Business Unit has been created to pursue an aggressive commercial
growth program to ensure Inmarsat emerges as the leading provider of cabin and cockpit
services across the civil aviation industry. Combining both existing and new channels to market,
maximising our relationships with trusted service and hardware partners as well as forging
exciting new partnerships with complementary providers such as Deutsche Telekom, Inmarsat
Aviation is well positioned to achieve our market leadership ambitions.

The Inmarsat name in Aviation is synonymous with engineering and operating excellence,
making us the standard in reliability. As we add innovation to that short list, and push the
technological boundaries of what our industry can offer, we never take our eye off delivering
to our customers’ expectations, and preparing for what they will need in the future. The
intersection of global mobile connectivity with the aviation industry represents a particularly
dynamic part of Inmarsat’s business today, and promises to develop into a pillar of the
Inmarsat story in the future.

Inmarsat’s reputation is founded primarily on the strength of its people. So, congratulations
on your selection to join the Aviation team. We aim to be a lean and effective team, and we
believe you can make a meaningful contribution. Individual achievement is important and
necessary, but our ultimate success as a business will turn on our success as a team.

Again, welcome aboard!

Leo Mondale
President, Inmarsat Aviation

Formed in 2014, Aviation is the newest business unit within Inmarsat; it is also the most rapidly
growing, both in terms of internal size and external market growth. The Aviation Business Unit
(ABU) came together originally as a team of experts to survey the current, and future, global
demand for aircraft connectivity and to define the technological and commercial strategy
necessary to position Inmarsat as the leading provider of communications for this burgeoning
market. From before the creation of the ABU, Inmarsat has been laying the technological
foundations for continued success and accelerated growth in the aviation industry. In August
2015, the third satellite of our Global Xpress constellation was successfully launched; shortly
after that, our partnership with Deutsche Telekom was announced to develop a hybrid LTE/S-
band European Aviation Network. The potency of this combination of technology and
Inmarsat’s heritage of exceptional execution and reliability was recognised by Deutsche
Lufthansa when they became the first European airline to select Inmarsat as the exclusive
provider for all their connectivity needs, across their fleet of 300 aircraft.

In the years ahead, the ABU will continue to drive the successful commercialisation of
Inmarsat’s infrastructure, through creative commercial strategy and the development of
products and services that are highly relevant to our customers, and grow revenue streams
from the cockpit, cabin and airline operations.

Our aim is to be the leader of innovation, technology, and services of the connected aircraft:
to set the standard for aviation communications.

Powering Aviation Connectivity: Our

products and services

How Inmarsat satellite communications work

To use Inmarsat the aircraft needs to be installed with appropriate equipment comprising an
antenna – typically installed on the top of the aircraft fuselage – and ‘avionics’ (aircraft
electronics installed within the fuselage), normally in the aircraft electronics bay or similar. The
system automatically logs on to the Inmarsat network when the aircraft powers up. The
Inmarsat system will automatically send or receive voice, ACARS or other communications to
or from the aircraft as required, wherever the aircraft flies.

If no communications activity is registered, the relevant Inmarsat ground earth station then
periodically sends ‘polling signals’ or ‘handshakes’ to the satellite, which relays them to the
aircraft. If the aircraft is still operating, an acknowledgement signal, containing basic system
information, is sent back to the ground earth station from the aircraft. This includes its unique
identification code, and confirmation the aircraft satcom is still operating and available for
communications, if required.

Passenger Connectivity

Global Xpress (GX)

The successful launch in August 2015 of the third satellite in Inmarsat’s Global Xpress
constellation has tremendous implications for the aviation industry. Operating in the resilient
Ka-band, while integrating seamlessly with our proven L-band network, and with steerable
beams for areas of high traffic, GX will offer the first global high speed broadband for the skies.
GX will offer the most extensive coverage of airline routes of any operator, connecting
passengers, pilots, crew and providing the backbone for safety and operational monitoring
services.

European Aviation Network (EAN)

The EAN is a partnership between Inmarsat and Deutsche Telekom – bringing together two
leading experts in global connectivity to deliver a high-speed broadband service to the
aviation community. The world-leading connectivity platform is a hybrid satellite (S-band) LTE
network, designed to meet the needs of airlines and their passengers across the busy traffic
routes of Europe and to increase bandwidth in high-density flight areas.

Safety and Operational Services

Classic Aero

We are the trusted provider of satellite communications services to the majority of the world’s
airlines and our services support varying functionality, coverage, equipment, installation and
usage costs that all meet the high quality and reliability standards that our customers have
come to expect.

Our Classic Aero H/H+ and Aero I services offer Aeronautical Mobile Satellite (Route) Service
AMS(R)S communications that meet International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)
requirements. These are now standard on the world’s oceanic air routes and are now starting
to be used to meet ICAO’s global flight tracking requirements using ADS-C.

SwiftBroadband-Safety

In 2008, Inmarsat launched a new constellation of satellites that provide the SwiftBroadband
(SB) service, a communications network that delivers an “always-on” globally available data
connection for aircraft. Inmarsat built upon SB in 2015 by launching SwiftBroadband – Safety
(SB-S), our L-band-based satellite communications system for the aviation industry.
Developed for use in the flight deck and utilizing advanced avionics, it provides airlines with
cockpit communication, both for operations and air traffic control, everywhere in the world.
New SB-S terminals from our avionics partners are smaller, easier to install, more capable, and
less costly than ever before. SB-S can be used for multiple flight deck applications including
continuous positional awareness, Electronic Flight Bag updates, and Airline Operational
Communication voice and data. In addition, SB-Safety is performing comparably to Very High
Frequency Data Link in terms of latency, the delay by which a communication is affected due
to the distance the wave has to travel.

Aircraft Communication Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS)

The Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) enables route
instructions, clearances and other messages to be sent directly to the cockpit via Inmarsat as
electronic data messages.

ACARS is used for sending text messages between an aircraft, aviation authorities and the
airline, and is the standard non-voice communications method for aviation operations.
Messages and data can include those sent from pilots to air traffic control, or automatically
generated data on how the aircraft’s systems are performing, or other vital information such
as weather reports.

Back to contents 9

When an aircraft flies over land, ACARS message are sent via VHF radio. But when an aircraft
is in remote regions, or over water and out of range of VHF radio, the signal automatically
switches to satellite.

Business and General Aviation

Jet ConneX

Jet ConneX offers high-speed, uninterrupted inflight internet connection to VIP and business
jet owners and passengers. Powered by Inmarsat’s Global Xpress network, the service provides
speeds of up to 50mbs, effectively enabling the business executive to replicate his/her office
in the sky and the flight crew to provide an efficient, comfortable experience.

SwiftBroadband

SwiftBroadband, launched globally in 2008, is Inmarsat’s most installed high-speed data
solution across business and commercial aviation. Powered by Inmarsat’s 4th generation of L-
band satellites, SBB is an IP-based service, enabling speeds of up to 650 Kbps (with HDR
service) and supporting a wide range of cockpit, cabin and operational applications.
