Congratulations to SMART to once again release the annual SMART Newsletter for
2019 edition. It is a proud moment for IIUM Community to learn that SMART has
managed to organize many academic-related activities for all students throughout the
year.
In 2019, the activities organized by SMART specifically focused on providing IIUM
students with academic support and academic enrichment programmes which are
reflected in this newsletter. Overall, the number of programmes have increased and so
are the number of IIUM students who had participated in SMART programmes.
For 2020, while still providing similar programmes, SMART will focus more on tutorials
for university courses and soft skills workshops. It is hoped that IIUM students will
grab the opportunity to acquire as many learning skills as possible and to strive harder
and smarter towards academic achievement and overall excellence.
I pledge my full support to SMART and I hope that this unit will continue to provide
impactful activities and training to our students and eventually contribute towards
IIUM flagships projects, vision and mission.

HEAD OF STUDENT SMART LEARNING
AND RESEARCH TRAINING UNIT (SMART)

2019 has been a very positive year for SMART. All the 3 campuses; Gombak, Kuantan
and Pagoh had successfully provided impactful activities and training to our students.
This was evident in the increase in the number of participants and programmes
conducted.
For the previous years, SMART programmes had focused on providing IIUM students
with soft skills and non-formal language classes. However, for the year 2020 onwards,
SMART will align all activities and programmes with the university’s vision, mission and
flagships through academic support and academic enrichment programmes. For the
start, even though SMART would still provide and conduct similar programmes, SMART
will focus more on tutorials for university courses as it one of SMART contributions
towards students’ academic excellence.
Thus, it is hoped that IIUM students will strive harder and smarter toward academic
achievement and overall excellence.

こんにちはAssalamualaikum warahmatullah,
(Konnichiwa)
 
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)-driven universities like International Islamic
University Malaysia (IIUM) play a major role in helping humanity in addressing changes
and challenges by making discoveries, educating leaders and the new generations, and
also developing sustainable innovations that will benefit the society. Here, at Student
Smart Learning & Research Training Unit (SMART), we provide a great platform, not just
for IIUM students but also for our academics and staff, where our programmes engaged
and involved the local communities and societies in achieving enduring excellence in
research and education.
 
As the Deputy Head of SMART Office, IIUM Kuantan Campus, I am pleased to bring you
the latest edition of the SMART Bulletin 2019, which is designed to share the growing
community of SMART Gombak, Kuantan and Pagoh campuses. At SMART Kuantan,
through the Academic Enrichment Programme (AEP), academics, researchers and
specialist trainers share their work in order to enhance knowledge and practice to
support our students and stakeholders which will equip them for their future roles as
leaders and professionals. In addition to this, SMART Kuantan also provides language
classes through Academic Support Programme (ASP), which offers up to 7 languages;
Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, French, Arabic, Malay and English for MUET, which are
held two times a year, and had attracted 330 participants from IIUM Kuantan
community and the surrounding areas.
 
Great discoveries start with great people; talented individuals steeped in the knowledge
of their core discipline, who are confident to work with challenges, are adept at
understanding and working with others from different fields and are immersed in an
atmosphere of excellence. Here, at SMART Kuantan, we will continue to support our
stakeholders to achieve excellence.
 
In addition, SMART Kuantan will not be able to deliver our promises and let our
students enjoy learning without the support of a great team. I would like to pledge a
great appreciation to SMART Kuantan team; Effa, Shafiq, Nadia, Hami and Syasya for
their enthusiasm, commitment and hard work in attaining successful and in sharing the
inspiration with others through what we do and offer.
 
The world keeps changing and SMART IIUM is evolving too. We acknowledge that there
will always be many new challenges and opportunities. We do know that we have great
people and we will strive in building a more agile, adaptive and resilient community so
that we will be ready for whatever the future holds.

Assalamualaikum Warrahmatullahi Wabarakatuh,
 
October 2019 has marked the first anniversary of SMART at Kulliyyah of Languages
and Management, IIUM Pagoh campus. Within one year, the unit has welcomed not
just the IIUM community but the local community as well.
 
From having only two language classes (Arabic and Mandarin) in Semester 2
2018/2019, we have managed to offer five language classes (Arabic, Mandarin,
Japanese, Korean and Bahasa Melayu) in Semester 1 2019/2020 consisting of IIUM
students and lecturers as well as learners from SK Panchor, Politeknik Tun Syed
Nasir, UTHM, IKBN Melaka, and the surrounding areas of Bukit Pasir and Muar.
 
Apart from the language classes, we have also reached out to the local community by
being involved in Program Kolaborasi IPTA - Sekolah untuk Program Kem Bahasa &
Motivasi Kendiri Tahun 6 at SK Seri Jong, Muar.  SMART Pagoh has sent 11 students
to handle various activities in Bahasa Melayu, English, Mandarin, Korean and Arabic
to inculcate the interest in language learning among the students.
 
InsyaAllah, I pray that we will be able to contribute more and pave way to greater
success in the future.

New language to be learnt, New experience to be gained.

Every semester, SMART conducts the Academic Support Programmes (ASP) which
consist of two programmes: Language Enhancement Programme (LEP) and Peer
Tutoring Programme (PTP).
 
For the LEP this year, SMART had offered several language classes such as Arabic,
English, Mandarin, Japanese, Bahasa Melayu, French, and Turkish. Especially for
Arabic and English, we offered different levels depending on the student's ability.
SMART offers some kulliyyah subjects which are needed by students to improve their
academic performance. For the year of 2019, SMART had offered Financial
Management, Statistics, History of Western Philosophy, and Logics for Islamic Studies
as part of SMART PTP programmes.

For the year of 2019, we had reached approximately 400, students
who registered for SMART Language courses and kuliyyah
subjects.

Preparation for the University Journey

This semester, Leap Power was held at
multipurpose hall Research Management Centre
(RMC),45 students from Gombak and Pagoh
campus had participated in this programme. This
programme was specifically designed to facilitate

Are you excited with SMART Open day

At the beginning of every semester, SMART office Lucky Draw
will organize Smart Open Day. The purpose is to Winner
encourage students to get to know Smart facilities and
services provided.

There are plenty of activities prepared every semester, for
example, chess, puzzle, photo booth, crosswords puzzle,
Scrabble, carrom and movie screening throughout Smart
Open day. While waiting to register, students can have a
leisure time to have fun and participate in activities
organized here.

Not only that, we also have lucky draw session where the
lucky winner who completed the survey will have a chance
to win a hamper.
