CONTINUATION OF THE

Some of the Special Challenges of Stepparents at or from distance
In the November-December 2018 issue the two (2) essential characteristics of /for STEPPARENTING were
highlighted as “INTENTIONAL and RESILIENT” meaning “man or woman to want to be “responsible parent” of the
biological child / children of someone else, and be also willing and ready to deal with all the possible encumbrances
and overcome all associated obstacles”.
The notion of “stepparent at or from distance” is derived from amorous relationships initiated /developed either
during single /group cruises, vacations at resorts or at business conferences, regional professional meetings, annual
conventions when the “special friends”, lovers / partners of the custodial parents domicile/work in other towns,
cities, states or countries; maintaining regular communication mostly via texting, phone calls or “coded messages”
on social media when not “being together” in arranged encounters, and initially having no familiarity or no person
-to-person contact with the children living with the biological “Mom” or “Dad”.
Usually such situations do have their special challenges about gradual acceptance, but can also provide unique
opportunities for easier tolerance leading to collaborative rapports in phases. Generally approval or acceptance as
the most problematic element from the perspective of the children of the custodial mom or dad can be by-passed
when the relationship has already “matured” by the time the children are either formally informed or they have
come to notice it by themselves.
The stepparent at or from distance, as he or she assumes parental responsibilities and performs related parenting
duties, being removed from the day-to-day home tensions -psychological or environmental- between the custodial
parent and the children, can be in a better position to play “neutral arbiter” in most cases. However he / she must
be careful about “being parent first” and avoid the temptation of playing mostly the role of “closest /best friend”
of the children.
At times the children living with their custodial parents can be “resentful” about their Mom or Dad being in an
amorous relationship with someone other than their other biological parent, particularly when or if they have been
entertaining possible reconciliation of their parents, or if they are extremely concerned about their inheritance or
when they are truly protective of their Mom or Dad.
It is also suggested that the custodial parent arranges visits of the partner at the “home” to meet and know the
children, and for the “stepparent at or from distance”, if practical or whenever appropriate, to plan regular and
special visits of the custodial parent with the children at his /her domicile, to develop greater familiarity and
attempt to facilitate improvement of rapports. The actual assumption of parental responsibilities necessarily
involves communication between the stepparent and the custodial parent with the children, jointly or separately
depending on the issues involved. Additionally the Stepparent’s parenting functions include advising, direct or
indirect disciplining, guidance, plus conversations about financial matters in relation to the care of the children,
their needs and their wants, vacation plans with and without the children, plus home maintenance...Several of
those relationships at or from distance have resulted in cohabitation later, some in legal marriages or
permanently “live-in together”.

Financial Planning For Families and Individuals Series
Family Finances: Q&A with a Financial Advisor

Choosing a New Credit Card? Read This First
A quick glance at television commercials or online pop-up ads shows that reward programs are the name of the game for
many credit cards. If you have a high credit score and pay your bills on time and in full, chances are you can benefit from
choosing cards with attractive incentives. Are you getting the most bang for your buck when you pull out the plastic? Here are
four tips to consider as you look for a more rewarding approach to using credit cards:
Tip #1 – Review your current cards
Many investors hold the same cards for years – even decades. While this is often a responsible approach, now may be the
time to review the cards you own. Your credit worthiness (as determined by your income, credit history and other factors)
can change over time, along with your financial situation. This means the right cards for you today may be different than the
ones in your wallet. Opening and closing accounts may negatively impact your credit score, so proceed carefully.
Tip #2 – Identify cards that offer your best opportunities
Determine the type of rewards that matter most to you. Are you looking for airline miles, the chance to earn points toward
concert tickets, bikes and other items, or would you prefer cash back? Do your favorite retailers offer cards with appealing
rewards? Consider your financial goals and how credit card benefits could help get you closer to achieving them. For example,
earning airline miles could reduce the cost of your annual vacation, or extra cash could be invested in your IRA. Be selective
and don’t fall into the trap of spending money just to earn points.
Tip #3 – Find common ground
If you are single, decisions about which credit cards to hold are up to you. But for couples who share financial responsibilities,
it’s important to align on which cards to apply for and whether to have joint or separate accounts. Lay out your spending
strategy, such as determining who will pay the bills each month or a dollar amount that requires a conversation with your
spouse before purchase. Align on how to allocate your reward points so you’re working toward a common goal.
Tip #4 – Be stingy about fees
Many attractive credit cards have no annual fee or waive fees for an introductory period. Check the fine print, particularly if
you have plans to travel abroad, as foreign transaction fees may also apply. Minimizing fees can help you maximize the value
of your reward points.
Credit cards these days can be rewarding, especially if you use them wisely. Consult with a financial professional if you’d like
help reviewing your finances.

NEIGHBORHOOD POLICING
PROTECTING AND CONNECTING
Neighborhood Policing and its Goals
Neighborhood Policing is the cornerstone of today’s New York City Police Department (NYPD). It’s a comprehensive
crime-fighting strategy, built on improved communication and collaboration between police officers and community
residents. Neighborhood Policing works to accomplish three core goals: to continue reducing crime; to promote trust and
respect; and to solve problems collaboratively, both within the department and with neighborhood residents. It is also a way
of improving police morale as officers engage with the more challenging and satisfying task of solving problems and fighting
crime at the sector level.
The 105th Precinct serves the easternmost portion of Queens. Queens Village, Cambria Heights, Laurelton, Rosedale,
Springfield Gardens, Bellerose, Glen Oaks, New Hyde Park, and Floral Park comprise the area covered by the precinct.
