May 2020

Dear Valued Members,

First and foremost, I hope all is well with you and your families. As I take in the
beauty of the Platte Valley and the small town of Saratoga, it is difficult to also
take in the realities so many are facing around the world and across our wonderful
country.

This newsletter is a bit late as we have been awaiting guidance from the state.
Wyoming Governor, Mark Gordon has lifted, as of today Saturday, May 9th, the
14-day mandatory quarantine for all visitors from out of state. Dining rooms are
also permitted to open with distancing requirements consistent with CDC and
national standards. While much will be different, your employee family is
dedicated to ensuring the safety of all while providing a fantastic experience!

Next week, you will be receiving information on what we are doing to keep everyone safe in all areas of the
Club. I’m sure you are already aware of most, but we will provide detailed guidance in everyone’s best
interest.

Inside The May I’m very excited that Mike and Amy have been here for a few weeks. Xavier has
arrived and Chef Victor is on his way. We have had beautiful weather, the Golf
Course is emerald green and there are multiple fishing and excursion options.

2020 Issue: Golf Carts will be allowed on the Golf Course starting, Saturday, May 16th

Over the past few months we have been working on new marketing ideas and publications to
promote the specialness and uniqueness of Old Baldy Club.
Last month we shared the addition of videos on the Public Side of our Website. There are a total
of five videos and we encourage all Members to visit the Website and check them out. We also
have started posting, at least weekly, various information on Old Baldy’s Facebook Page. Please
take the opportunity to “Like” our Facebook Page. This Page will frequently highlight what is
happening at the Club. Also, please share with your family, friends and colleagues so they can
familiarize themselves with the Club and see all that membership at Old Baldy has to offer.
New this month is the publication of OBC’s “Lookbook” that presents the “Uniqueness of Old Baldy Club”. OBC is
more than just a Club that offers a variety of activities… it is a lifestyle that is experienced by all of you… our Members.
This publication was designed to visually show how a membership at Old Baldy can enhance your life and the life of
your family and friends. The below article (continued on the next page) will show page by page this new publication.
This “Lookbook” is currently on the Public Side of OBC’s Website and it is now being shared with all prospects who
express an interest in learning more about our Club.
As always, please let me know if you would like me to reach out to anyone you may know who would like to learn more
about Old Baldy Club ([email protected]).

During our off-season we were so glad to see so many

Platte Valley, and others just visited OBC as a place “to

get away from it all”. Keep in mind, when the Club is
closed the Cottages are always available at only $150 per

bedroom. Judy (in the Office) is always available to

Update from Golf Course Maintenance

April has come and gone and with that we had the full spectrum of spring weather. We
experienced temperature swings from mid-60s down to single
digits within 36 hours, as well as the usual mix of moisture
coming in all forms. We pulled the tarps on the greens on April
6th and began our initial cultural practices on the greens that
same week. The practices included mowing, vertical mowing, and topdressing
to help smooth any imperfections on the putting surfaces. Though the
temperatures were not stable in April, we saw enough warm temperatures that
the majority of the property broke dormancy and started greening up nicely.
Winter storms and fluctuating temperatures postponed our aerification practices to some degree. We
completed fairway aerification in April, and have now begun greens, tees, and approaches aerification.
Throughout this time leading up until the Golf Shop opens on Saturday, May 16th, we will restrict the
use of golf carts on the course.
We have been working with more of a limited crew than usual during this time of year due to the Covid-19
crisis. With this change, we are doing things a little differently than we have done in the past. Our main focus
has been on the overall health of the property. The majority of our man hours have been dedicated towards
mowing, aerification, and irrigation auditing & repair. During the first part of May we added two more Staff
Members who will be very helpful additions. This new labor will largely be dedicated towards the playability
of our greens and bunkers.
Homeowners… please let us know when you are coming to OBC so we can have your carts ready for you. As
always if you have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to contact me (Golf Course
Superintendent, Evan Hill, [email protected] or 307-326-5905).

The Golf Shop is Opening Soon!

Hello from Saratoga! Amy and I arrived here on April 10th, and just like all of you, we
are looking forward to this virus being over and for all of us getting back to some sense
of normalcy. We do hope all of you have been safe and have stayed healthy.
The Golf Course and Driving Range will open for Member play and Golf Carts on
Saturday, May 16th. Play will be limited to Members, Family Members and their Guests at this time.
Along with the new apparel and styles we will be carrying in the
Golf Shop this summer, we also have arranged additional shopping
opportunities. We have an arrangement with Summit Brands (EP
Pro, Zero Restriction, Fairway & Green and B. Draddy) to allow
Old Baldy Members to make purchases on line for OBC logo’d
items. Just log onto the Member Side of OBC’s Website and go to
the Golf Page. Instructions are posted on the details of how to make
purchases. If you submit the promo code OBC15 you will receive a
15% discount on any items purchased. Additional Golf Catalogs will
become available soon and will be posted on OBC’s Website. Enjoy
nice safe shopping from your own home! We look forward to seeing
all of you at Old Baldy very soon.

Do you like fishing in rain, sleet, or even snow? Do you like float fishing
while wearing at least 7 layers of clothes? Do you like catching big brown
trout? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you might like fishing
in the Platte Valley in April!
We experienced some awesome pre-runoff fishing this season due to some
bitter cold fronts that kept the river low and clear for most of April. The big
fish in our valley really feed recklessly as water temperatures begin to rise.
This is not the time of year to expect good quantities of fish, but dedicated
anglers can expect a chance at high-quality Browns.
Stuart and Daney Tanner have kicked off the 20” Club this year with a 22”
Rainbow and a 22.5” Brown respectively. What a start! Both fish were
caught streamer fishing from the Club to Foote access. Last week three 20”
browns were caught on our very own river road in sight of the Club.

Club entry of the season… Brown caught on a streamer. Brown Trout caught on the

River Road.

Big Brown Trout mobilized in the month of April due to the need to feed after a long winter. There is a good
deal of food in the river this time of year, so food preferences change frequently. Streamer fisherman should
switch flies constantly if they are not producing. In the last two weeks, we rarely caught more than one fish
on the same fly. Olive, black, white, brown, and yellow streamers all produced fish at some point in our last
outings. It is all about patience and consistency… and putting up with the temperamental spring weather.

Our water conditions are looking strong for the month of May, as
our watershed has 108% of its average annual snowpack. Runoff
has officially begun, and the river is taking on a chocolate hue.
We can’t wait for warm weather and great fishing this season!

One more thing… don’t forget to book
your Side by Side excursion this coming
summer. With the new Yamaha we will
be able to get to additional river sites
and lakes in the mountains and also
offer scenic off road trips.
