May 2021

Dear Old Baldy Club Members

As you know, we were very fortunate last season to avoid any outbreak of Covid at the Club. Over the
winter, Carbon County was not hit as hard as some other counties in Wyoming, and this spring the incidence
of Covid in Carbon County has declined substantially. Even better, vaccinations are now available to all
adults in the County.

The Club will do its part to try to ensure that this summer will be equally free of Covid. This season we
will be following many of the same CDC-recommended health and safety protocols we adopted last summer.
For example, in our Dining Rooms the tables will be appropriately spaced and sanitized after every use. Our
servers will be masked, and only they will handle the serving utensils at our buffets. Hand sanitizer will be
readily available not only in the Dining Rooms but throughout the Clubhouse and Lodge.

But to maximize our chances for a Covid-free season, we need you also to do your part. We hope that all
Members and adult guests will be fully vaccinated before they come to the Club this season. That is the best
way to protect not only yourself but also your fellow Club Members, guests and staff. It has been widely
reported that the leading vaccines are remarkably effective in lessening both the incidence of Covid and the
severity of the symptoms if one happens to contract the virus. We are likewise encouraging all of our staff to
get vaccinated.

With everyone’s help, we should have another safe and healthy season in the great Wyoming outdoors.
Come join in the fun! See you soon.

Spring has finally arrived here in Saratoga. It has been cold and snowy for the past month but
I think old man winter has given up. That means the 2021 Old Baldy Season is just around
the corner.
I want to update you on our winter projects that were started and completed:
• A complete refurbishing of our river pumps and the intake area for the pumps
• Reroofing the main area of the Dining Rooms and Kitchen area
• A complete remodel of the Eagles Nest
• Repairs and updating the fire suppression throughout the Village and Clubhouse areas
• New air conditioning and heating in the Ladies Locker Room
And... many other small projects throughout the Club. All in preparation for what is shaping up to be an
exciting season here at Old Baldy.
The advanced reservations for the Season are at an extraordinary level. The Lodge Suites and Cottages are
filling up quickly... the Ewe Tourn, 2 Man Match Play, and the OBC Cup are full and have a waiting list and
the Buck’s & Does is reaching capacity.
In addition to the golf, Lisa Culbreath has many fun and exciting activities planned for this Season. The Chef
has plans to update his daily Lunch and Dinner Menus and will also have wonderful weekly specials as an
addition to his menus. The Streams Department is also off to a great start. We have already had the first 20”
fish caught by Walt Tanner last month which bodes well for the upcoming early angling season. So, if you
can, get out and enjoy the water before the snow melt.
Please, if you have plans to be at the Club this summer, get in touch with Judy Welton as soon as possible.
Make your reservations and take advantage of all the things Old Baldy has to offer.
I would like the Membership to know I am very excited about this upcoming Season. I believe it will be one
of the best years in some time with all the events that are planned and all the activities available to enjoy. So
please, don’t miss out on all the fun. I look forward to seeing everyone here at Old Baldy this summer.
Mike Stubblefield,
Director of Operations

SHOOTING INSTRUCTION

A warm hello to all Members… people I think of as the Old Baldy Family. My name is
Rusty Rogers, your Security Chief. It has been my honor to stand duty for the Club for 14
years. Before the Security position, I served the Club as the Golf Technician for 7 years,
during which I learned to love the course.
My shooting history is very nearly as long as my life. I began hunting ground squirrels and prairie dogs at the family
ranch at what would now be considered far too young… about 6 years of age. I have hunted north American big game
all my life and worked at the necessary skills all that time also. While in the US Army I served as the Range Master at
the Head Quarters Co. of the 6th US Army. I also competed on the HQ Co International Match Pistol Team and scored
Master with both hands using the Springfield M1911A1 .45ACP (Army Combat Pistol). I taught handgun safety for
many years as a certified instructor. I no longer hold those certifications and am now a shooting coach.
I will be holding classes through the month of May on Tuesday afternoons (3:00pm, 4:00pm & 5:00pm). During the
remainder of the summer, I will be available to give classes Thursday through Monday by appointment. Each class
will be one hour in length as hand fatigue and memory overload can occur. The cost is $10.00 per hour per individual.
I can be contacted at 307-329-8161 (Thursday thru Monday evenings) or at [email protected]. You can leave a
message on the security phone anytime.

Warm temps are on the horizon for the Platte

I spent some time hiking through the fire damage from last year’s Mullen Fire, Walt Tanner kicking off the

hefty Rainbow.

The fire will have a few effects on our river, such as lots of turbidity during runoff and plenty of fallen
timber floating in the river in May, but otherwise I don’t expect it to negatively impact our fishery. The
Encampment River, Big Creek, Spring Creek, and Jack Creek will be running clear, giving the fish some
relief from the dirty water.
Due to constantly changing wind speeds and temperatures last
September, the Mullen fire varied greatly in intensity. Sections of
the scorched terrain varied anywhere from “lightly crisped” to
“Hiroshima.” The detriments of fire are easy to identify, but
ecological benefits of wildland fires often outweigh their negative
effects. Fires often remove alien plants that compete with native
species for nutrients and space, and remove undergrowth, which
allows sunlight to reach the forest floor, thereby supporting the
growth of native species. The ashes that remain after a fire add

Golf CPoourtrlasnedMGoalifnCtleunbance News

Spring has been very slow to arrive to Saratoga. The
first day of April we hit 70 degrees, which fooled
anyone who is not used to spring in Wyoming. We
removed the greens tarps and pressurized our
irrigation system on that day. Since then, we have
hit only a few warm days periodically, with long
stretches of cool, freezing weather mixed in
between. The cold fronts that continually moved in
provided us with some good snow cover which has
helped spark some life around the property.
We experienced a much drier winter than usual this year, which has caused a deeper
state of dormancy than we are used to seeing. Snow cover during the winter months is essential to having a
quick green up in the spring, as the turf is able to retain a lot of the nutrients it otherwise uses up protecting
itself when it is exposed to the elements. The “heart” of turfgrass is the crown of the plant. As long as the
heart is still pumping, or the crown is alive, the plant is not dead. When the plant exerts all of its energy and
nutrients to stay alive, all of the energy is put into the crown. The slow green up we are seeing is due to the
plant having to completely regenerate its leaves from the crown up. Every day we are seeing more and more
life as the temperatures steadily increase.
Aerification of most areas has been postponed due to inclement weather, but there is light at the end of the
tunnel with temperatures trending up. We are set to begin aerification of greens, approaches, and tees during
the first week of May, weather permitting. From this time up until the Golf Shop opens, we will restrict the
use of golf carts on the course. As Mike mentioned in his last screecher article, we had success last fall using
our new cultural implement followed by a heavy roller in an effort to alleviate the wash boarding around the
property. Our focus this spring with this procedure is on fairways and intermediates, then we will move on to
the rough and do as much as we can until the Golf Course opens.
Our river pumps, that supply water for both the Homeowners and the
Golf Course Irrigation Systems, had a big overhaul this winter. The
intake piping and screen were completely removed and replaced with
new HDPE piping that will hold up with time as it is as resilient of a
material as there is for our purposes. Also, the pumps themselves were
hauled off to Denver to be completely refurbished and were
reinstalled at the end of April.
I am pleased to announce that our search for an Equipment Manager
has come to an end. Chris Pannunzio will be stepping in to oversee the
Club’s fleet of equipment. A Colorado native, Chris has over twenty
years of experience managing fine turf equipment throughout Colorado
and Wyoming. Chris and his significant other, Stephanie, enjoy the
outdoors and are avid fishermen. They are very thrilled to call this area
home.
Homeowners… Please let us know when you will be arriving to OBC
so we can have your carts ready. As always if you have any questions
or comments, please contact me.

These are all fun events and we hope you and your guests will join us for them whenever you are at the
Club.
Our big events are already filling up quickly so, please, if you are planning on playing in these events,
sign-up early so you don’t miss out on them.
• Ewe Tourn – June 17th to 20th - The field is full but we are taking teams on a waitlist
• Two Man Match Play – June 25th to 27th - The field is nearly full
• Flag Tournament – July 3rd - No advanced sign-up necessary

In addition to our events we are excited to welcome back two of our Staff Members who will be returning to
work in June. Ethan Nash finished up his senior year at Millikan High School and is headed to College of
the Desert in Palm Desert, California this fall. Ethan shot under par in a high school match for the first time
this spring and he’s looking forward to coming back to Wyoming for the great summer weather and the
people. Kaylyn Hunter completed her freshman year at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, South
Dakota and is happy to be back home in Saratoga for the summer. This will be her 3rd season at Old Baldy
and she said she is looking forward to playing golf in the evenings after work. A couple of her favorite Old
Baldy golf events are the Ewe Tourn and the OBC Cup.
We also have two new employees that will be great additions to our staff. Isaac Calderon and Mark
Williams both grew up in the Palm Springs area and played junior golf against each other and then played
on the same high school golf team. Isaac played all 4 years on a golf scholarship at Corban University in
Salem, Oregon and just graduated with a Business and Communications degree last spring. Mark is
currently on the golf team at Cal State San Bernardino and majoring in Sociology. They both enjoy the
outdoors and like camping, mountain biking and
hiking so we think they are going to be a great fit in
Wyoming and at Old Baldy.
If there is ever anything our Golf Staff can do to
make your Old Baldy experience better, please
contact me in the Golf Shop (307-326-3924) or you
can email me at [email protected].
We look forward to seeing everyone soon!
