SHOOTING INSTRUCTION
A warm hello to all Members… people I think of as the Old Baldy Family. My name
is Rusty Rogers, your Security Chief. It has been my honor to stand duty for the Club
for 14 years. Before the Security position, I served the Club as the Golf Technician for
7 years, during which I learned to love the course.
My shooting history is very nearly as long as my life. I began hunting ground
squirrels and prairie dogs at the family ranch at what would now be considered far too
young… about 6 years of age. I have hunted north American big game all my life and worked at the necessary skills
all that time also. While in the US Army I served as the Range Master at the Head Quarters Co. of the 6th US Army. I
also competed on the HQ Co International Match Pistol Team and scored Master with both hands using the
Springfield M1911A1 .45ACP (Army Combat Pistol). I taught handgun safety for many years as a certified instructor.
I no longer hold those certifications and am now a shooting coach.
Starting in June, I will be available to give classes Thursday through Monday by appointment. Each class will be one
hour in length as hand fatigue and memory overload can occur. The cost is $10.00 per hour per individual. I can be
contacted at 307-329-8161 (Thursday thru Monday evenings) or at [email protected]. You can leave a message
on the security phone anytime.

Dear Membership,
It is with great pleasure that I can say the winter is over! Old Baldy is opening up in
a few days and we here at the Club are excited and ready for the 2021 Season to get
underway. Currently the staff is arriving and preparing their areas for what
promises to be a very busy, yet fun and exciting season. Most of our 2020 Staff is
returning, yet you will see some new faces in each department.
As I mentioned in last month’s Screecher the CDC’s guidelines are very fluid and
constantly changing. We want all the Members and their Guests that come to Old
Baldy to be assured we are still taking every practical precaution to keep a safe
environment. Even though masks are no longer required by guidelines, our Waitstaff and Kitchen
Employees, who haven’t been vaccinated against the Corona Virus, will be required to wear masks. We hope
this will be an incentive for our staff to get the vaccination and help keep Old Baldy virus free.
The update on all the winter projects is: All the projects have either been completed or are in their final
stages of completion. The club house is ready for business, the remodeled Eagles Nest looks fantastic, the
pool is being painted and will be filled next week, the wind screens for the tennis courts are being installed
next week and the golf course looks terrific. We are ready for a wonderful season.
On the financial side I would like to share with you that the advanced lodge and cottage reservations,
reservations that are booked and we have received deposits for, are over 3 times higher than any year in
recent past. We have deposits for 2 weddings, 3 fairly large member groups and several of our golf
tournaments have reached maximum capacity with only the Bucks & Does and the Fall Round-up still having
some space. Having all this great activity bodes well for the revenue side of the Club’s finances.
I am really excited for the season to get started, I believe this will be one of the best seasons at Old Baldy in a
number of years and I hope your plans include joining us at the Club. I look forward to seeing all of you here
soon.

Director of Operations

Spring has finally found the Platte River Valley and the cottonwoods
are blossoming this week on the Platte and Encampment Rivers.
The Platte is finally in full runoff after being delayed by a cold May,
and we are predominantly floating the river’s upper reaches around 6
Mile Gap and Prospect Creek. These stretches are maintaining
enough clarity for good fishing even with the proximity to the Mullen
fire burn area. Guiding these stretches is a special privilege every
year because of the incredible landscape and finite float season. If
you are interested in floating either of these two amazing stretches,
you need to book in the first half of June to ensure there is enough water.
6 Mile to Bennett Peak is a great overnight trip that we are running this year. These stretches are your best
chance to see elk and bighorn sheep, as well as catch the salmonfly hatch in early June.
We had a great Pre-runoff month of May this year.
Freezing temps in the teens in the high country in
Mid May caused the river to drop and clear up for
an entire week, resulting in great streamer fishing
on the lower river. The Brown Trout in the Platte
really respond well to a sharp drop in flows during
the spring. They are still incredibly hungry after a
long winter with a slowed metabolism and are
eager to put on weight. Big meals like articulated
streamers on a sinking line are a great way to
encounter a 20” fish in May.

If you’ve fished with Aaron, Jason, Mark, Reese, Vinnie, or
Chase, you know that they are fantastic Guides and great
people. I’m enormously proud of the cohesive team unit
they’ve become and we are ready to run the Old Baldy
Club’s biggest Streams Department season ever.
But we’ll need your help! Get on the books for early June

Golf CPoourtrlasnedMGoalifnCtleunbance News
May brought some great growing weather for us along with steady precipitation
coming in all forms in typical Wyoming fashion. The rain, sleet, hail, and snow
along with warm temperatures have really helped
bring the property to life, and has helped fill in the
areas that suffered from our dry winter.
Our staff is filling out nicely and we have all of
our spots just about filled up, including many
returning faces, which is a great help to the team.
The wildlife this spring has been more sparse than
usual, thinning out as the Club gets busier. For the
past couple of weeks, a young bull moose has made himself comfortable
around the village during the early morning hours and can often be spotted
foraging on tree limbs.
A reminder as the golf season gets moving forward, please keep carts
out of the native grass areas. There are quite a few different tracks in
various native areas around the property at this point, and these tracks
will remain visible for the rest of the year. We have put out more signs
around the native areas than in years past to help spread the message.
Along the same “housekeeping” notes, I would like to encourage
everyone to please help with ball mark and divot repair throughout the
season. Filling your divots level to the surface around it with your sand
and seed mix will keep the ground level. Repairing a ball mark takes
only a few seconds, and it takes over two weeks to heal if gone
unrepaired. These small efforts truly make a difference in appearance
and playability of the course.
The plan, as of now, is to plant annual flowers around the second week
of June. We are still frosting up in the morning and it looks like that will
continue for at least another week or so. This will also be around the
time that we do our various other new shrub and tree plantings around
the property.
As always, please do not hesitate to contact me through email,
[email protected], or by phone, 307-326-5905.

With the temperatures warming up and summer right around the corner we are
looking forward to a great golf season here at Old Baldy. The Golf Shop is
stocked with men’s, women’s and kid’s clothing and we continue to get more
inventory in each day.
In addition to the clothing, we are carrying Callaway golf clubs in stock this
year. The best way to try out all their new equipment will be at our Callaway
Demo Day on Sunday, June 27th from 10:00am – 3:00pm. If you would like
to book a fitting with the Callaway representative, please call the Golf Shop or
you can email Ran Robinson to setup a time ([email protected]).
I am happy to report that most of our tournaments are already full which is fantastic to see this early. We
still have open spots in:
The Bucks & Does: Thursday, August 5th to Sunday, August 8th
Member / Member: Thursday, August 26th / during Members Week
Club Championships: Friday, August 27th & Saturday, August 28th / during Members Week
The Fall Round-up: Friday, September 10th to Sunday, September 12th
If you are interested in playing in any of these events, we encourage you to sign-up in advance so that you
don’t miss out.
Also, don’t forget about Monday Night Twilight which kicks off June 7th. The sign-up sheet is up on the
back patio of the Golf Shop or you can call 307-326-3924 or email [email protected] to sign up.
With tournaments and room reservations filling up quickly this year we expect this to be a busy season by
Old Baldy standards. We will keep the time-honored tradition of not having tee times but we do ask that
anyone who has more than one group please let the Golf Shop know ahead of time so that we ensure the
best experience for both your group and everyone else on the Golf Course. Also, we want to remind
everyone, if you are not starting on the first hole, please check in with the Golf Shop so that we can place
you on the course in a good spot and so that we know when you
will be coming around to the first hole.
We want to make everyone aware of a few events coming up
where the Golf Course will be closed for a portion of the day.
