~ Muralist captures Kingsland Attractions ~
If you’re looking for the perfect Kingsland Selfie Stop, look no further than the Kingsland Visitor’s Center/ Chamber
office at 1309 Ranch Road 1431.
The Chamber, with support from a Llano County Hotel Occupancy Tax grant, hired artist Crystal Nobles to create the
mural at the new visitor center.
Crystal grew up in Helotes, a small town outside of San Antonio. The middle of five home-schooled kids, Crystal
was given free rein to learn things on her own. An upbringing based in the church gave her an appreciation of God’s
breathtaking creations.
“My father is a gifted artist and nature enthusiast,” she said. “Growing up he took us on hiking or camping trips as
often as possible. It was there that I believe I fell in love with nature and wildlife. I always remember being infatuated
with watching him paint or looking through old pieces that he had painted when he was younger. I was eager to create
at a very young age and began drawing and painting when I was about 5 years old.”
Her father was a gentle critic, mixing instruction with encouragement.
“Art, in my opinion, is one of those things we refine, you get out what you put in,” she said. “I am a self-taught
artist and I have been refining my craft for about 20 years off and on through miscellaneous projects.”
A full-time painter for
six years, from 2016 to
2019 she was a fulltime
Mural Artist at the
Warren Wildlife Gallery/
Natural history museum
in Austin. She also is
a live painting artist,
working with wildlife,
conservation, veterans
and kid-focused non-
profit organizations for
fundraising events.

4 | KINGSLAND, TEXAS!
Once a sleepy weekend get-away and retirement community,
Kingsland is transforming into a vibrant, full-time home for folks
of all ages and stages of life.
Welcome to Kingsland, Texas, the heart of the Highland Lakes.
Here two rivers and two counties come together to create an escape with a small-town vibe and big-town
amenities. It’s fewer than two hours from San Antonio and Austin, four hours from Dallas/Fort Worth and
Houston. But it’s a lifetime away from the stress of urban life.
Come to stay, play, or vacay. Whether you’re here for a weekend, enjoying a balmy winter, looking for a place to
retire, or want to raise your kids out of the big city, Kingsland has much to offer.
STAY
Kingsland is one of those places folks visit and never leave – or leave just long enough to sell the house in the
city and find a place here.
When buying around the lake, it’s recommended you use a Realtor who specializes in lake-area real estate.
There are nuances about land and waterfront ownership and rules about building in a watershed that require
experience and expertise. So be sure to work with a member of the Kingsland / Lake LBJ Chamber and the
Highland Lakes Association of Realtors.
See “Putting Down Roots” on Page 7 for more resources for living here.
PLAY
Kingsland has year-round attractions: boating, fishing, hunting, swimming, golfing, disc golfing, hiking, birding,
eating, drinking, antiquing and exploring.
Let’s face it, the best part of the Highland Lakes area is the great outdoors. Multiple lakes, each with its own
personality, give boaters and anglers lots of choices.
There are many places to hike. Texas Parks and Wildlife and the US Fish & Wildlife Service maintain parks and
trails nearby. Among the most popular are Enchanted Rock, Inks State Park, Longhorn Caverns, Colorado Bend
KINGSLAND, TEXAS! | 5
State Park, the Balcones Canyonlands, and the Inks fisheries.
Many visitors head up Packsaddle Mountain. In 1873 it was the site of the Packsaddle Mountain Fight, the last
major Indian battle in the area. The elevation is 1,628 feet, and the higher of the two summits rises 650 feet
above U.S. Highway 71, southwest of Kingsland. Other visitors head to Devil’s Waterhole off Park Road 4.
Visitors also like to lounge, wade and swim at “The Slab,” a popular gathering area on the Llano River, accessible
on RR 3404 just upstream from Kingsland. There are no facilities, so pack in and pack out.
Several commercial outdoor facilities nearby are Spider Mountain lift-served mountain bike park, Reveille Peak
Ranch, Hidden Falls Adventure Park, and Canyon of the Eagles Observatory.
A perfect family outing is to Sweet Berry Farms, with seasonal activities ranging from strawberry picking in
spring to corn mazes, zinnia fields and activity-packed pumpkin patches in fall.
The area boasts nearly a dozen golf courses, and birders find plenty to observe throughout the region.
If hunting is your thing, know that Llano County is the Deer Capital of Texas, with countless gun ranges and deer
leases for your shooting experience.
Several Kingsland restaurants offer live music on a regular basis. Check out Boat Town Burger Bar, Wakepoint,
The Place Downtown, The Club Car Bar at Grande Central Café, and La Tequila Jalisco.
Great food is also available throughout Kingsland and in nearby Marble Falls, Llano, Granite Shoals, Horseshoe
Bay, Sunrise Beach and Cottonwood Shores.
There are numerous wineries, breweries, and distilleries in the area for the adventurous spirit-seekers.
Kingsland isn’t a new destination. For thousands of years, according to archaeological evidence, Native Americans
made their home on the Colorado and Llano rivers. In 1873, Martin and Nancy King named the valley at the
confluence of the two rivers Kingsland. The railroad made this a popular spot for a while, and the landmark
Antlers Hotel was built in 1901. With few roads, however, the area was mostly deserted until 1950, when the
Alvin Wirtz Dam was built. That jump-started the valley, and new roads and utilities attracted vacationers and
retirees to the lake, which was renamed in 1965 after Central Texas’ famous home-town boy, Lyndon Baines
Johnson.
The most notorious history in Kingsland is the landmark Antler’s Inn, a property that also has the actual house
from the filming of the 1974 classic “Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” The owners have been known to show the film
on the grounds and host other Massacre-themed events.
But there’s other history to be explored. The Nightengale Archaeological Site, 10 acres on the shores of Lake
LBJ, offers tours and open houses, providing the public opportunities to learn about the prehistoric past of the
Llano Uplift and Central Texas. The prehistoric site was discovered in 1988 when looters were caught stealing
artifacts from LCRA-owned land. LCRA soon determined this site to be a major archaeological discovery. More
than 171,000 recovered flint tools, spear points, arrowheads and other artifacts are evidence that the site has
been continuously inhabited for 6,500 years and possibly as far back as 10,000 years. The Texas Historical
Commission has declared the site a State Archeological Landmark.
History museums nearby include the Falls on the Colorado Museum, The Highland Lakes Squadron WWII Aircraft
& Museum, Fort Croghan Museum, Llano County Historical Museum and Red Top Jail.

VACAY
There are vacation accommodations to match every budget and preference.
Looking for a swanky (or just BIG) lake house? Check in with local management group portals, such as Hill
Country Stays or Front Desk Vacation Rentals. Or check out Log Country Cove, which has multiple houses for
vacation needs, or Villa Buchanan or Sunrise Cove on Lake LBJ. Of course, you can always use your favorite
national vacation rental app.
Want a bit of history and on-site dining? The Antlers is your spot in Kingsland, or Sandstone B&B in Llano.
Looking for a laid-back waterfront vibe with camp fires and rustic cabins? Got that too. Some worth checking
out (all also have RV spots): Valentine Lakeside, Little Lodge on the Lake and Rio Vista, Black Rock Cottages on
Buchanan.
Prefer RV camping? The area has plenty of parks, such as Freedom Lives Ranch and Sunset Point.

PLACES to SEE and PLAY
in Llano County
Baby Head Cemetery: This spot in Texas gets its name from Baby Mountain which got its name from an Indian
massacre long ago that left the remains of the baby in that spot.
Badu Building: The Badu Building is located in the City of Llano. It was added to the National Register of
Historic Places in 1980.
Black Rock Park: Along Lake Buchanan, visitors of all ages can spend the day putting a round of mini golf,
swimming in a shallow cove or fishing from the sandy shore. RV campsites, group campsites and colorful
waterfront cabins are available for your getaway. (512-369-4774)
Dabs Railroad Hotel: Dabs Hotel is located in the Historic Railyard District in the City of Llano, which was built
in 1907 and was a stop for all sorts of historic characters.
Enchanted Rock: The Llano Uplift is a peculiar rock formation created when granite pushed its way to the
surface exposing rocks all around Llano County. The most impressive example is Enchanted Rock in South Llano
County. The Uplift also kicked up tons of rare earth minerals that are scattered all over the county. There is
even a type of granite called “Llanite” that can only be found in Llano County.
Llano County Historical Museum: Located on the banks of the Llano River, just north of the Roy B. Inks
Bridge. The Historical Museum was originally Bruhl’s Drugstore, founded in 1900 by Louis H. Bruhl. It was
given to the Historical Society in 1965 by the Bruhl family. After renovations the interior, including the marble
soda fountain and leather fountain stools remains intact.
Llano Red Top Jail: Visible from the historic Inks Bridge spanning the Llano River, the Llano Red Top Jail is an
imposing Romanesque Revival structure. During the iron ore boom town era of the 1890’s, the Red Top with its
4-story gallows tower became a constant reminder to outlaws that they should keep their guns at home.
Pack Saddle Mountain: Named after the saddle-like appearance provided by twin peaks, Packsaddle Mountain
is a landmark hill that stands five miles southwest of Kingsland, Texas in eastern Llano County on State Highway
71 and is of interest to both historians and geologists. In 1873 it was the site of the Packsaddle Mountain Fight,
the last major Native American battle in the area. The mountain is now part of a large ranch called Packsaddle
Ranch.
The Lantex: Head to the LanTex Theater in the City of Llano to see a current film in the classic movie theater
that’s been entertaining the folks of Llano since 1927.
The Antlers Inn: The Antlers Hotel in Kingsland, Texas is a Texas Historic Landmark Hotel and is on the National
Register of Historic Places. The railroad opened the Antlers Hotel in 1901 for tourists arriving by train. This
stately two-story building surrounded by porches is an elegant choice for visitors to Kingsland and the Texas
Hill Country.
The Grand Central Café: The Victorian House at the Antlers Inn in Kingsland, Texas – Built in the early 1900’s,
this Queen Anne style cottage originally stood in Williamson County in what is now the City of Round Rock,
Texas. It was quite grand for its time with fish scale roofing and its chamfered corners with gingerbread trim.
Through its life, the Victorian house was home to a succession of families and students and served as a movie
set in 1973 for “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” The house was purchased by The Antlers Inn in 1998. It was
then dismantled, moved to Kingsland and completed refurbished.

across 13 U.S. states?
KINGSLAND. You want to be in Kingsland. Plan your trip NOW!
The yellow lines outline the limits of the path of totality in each state. The green middle line represents the
eclipse centerline, where totality lasts the longest in each state. The grey lines show the path of totality
entering and exiting each state. To experience the total phase of the eclipse in each state, you must be within
the yellow lines. The closer you are to the green centerline; the longer totality will last. Areas outside the

VISIT KINGSLAND
Kingsland boasts numerous spots to catch live music from locals and the growing scene of Hill Country
musicians. Boat Town Burger Bar, The Club Car Bar, Wakepoint LBJ and The Place Downtown provide
nighttime musical options.
Kingsland’s biggest event each year, AquaBoom, is one of the oldest continuously celebrated July Fourth
celebrations in Texas. The weeklong celebration includes three parades, pageants, a street dance, craft fair,
duck race, and, of course, a huge fireworks show.
Kingsland is home to The Antlers Hotel, a historic Victorian-style resort featuring a Queen Anne Style cottage
that served as the movie set for 1974’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and is now the home of Grand Central
Café. The Kingsland/Lake LBJ Chamber, building on that theme, has created a horror-themed event to attract
visitors to town each Fall.
On the Llano River just upstream from Kingsland, “The Slab” is a gathering point with pools of refreshing,
shallow water and lots of sand. It’s popular for wading, swimming with kids or just hanging out.
