Digital Broadcast Signal Transmission
MultiChoice offers its customers broadcast services in two ways:
1. Direct to the home (DStv/DTH)
2. Digital terrestrial (GOtv) transmission (discussed later)
DTH-Direct To Home Concept
Below is a simple diagram to explain the concept of how we receive and transmit the signal.

Requirements To Access DStv
MultiChoice customers are required to have the following to access DStv:
✓ DStv Satellite Dish (recommended size 80-90cm)
✓ DStv Smart Low Noise Block-Down Converter (LNB)
✓ A DStv Digital Satellite Decoder & Smartcard
✓ An Active DStv Subscription
We recommend that customers use accredited DStv Installers for all their
installation requirements

Transmission Data & Transport Streams
To pick up the signal the polarity pin in the DStv LNB needs to be polarized either horizontally
or vertically. DStv LNB (2) is the receiving “arm” that is mounted on the satellite dish (1).
It collects radio waves from the dish and converts these into a signal which the decoder (3)
then converts to sound and picture.
The decoder sends a voltage up to the DStv LNB (Low Noise Block- Down Converter) and
instructs the DStv LNB pin to split to the correct polarity.
If it is required to be:
horizontal, the decoder will send up 18V and if
vertical, it will send up 13V

DStv Viewing Options
The customer’s choice of decoder is dependent on their viewing option. MultiChoice decoders
offer customers two viewing options:
1. Live Broadcast
2. On Demand
Let’s look at the difference between these 2 options.
Live Broadcast On Demand
• Live broadcast is the process where • This is the new way to watch TV where
customers are sent entertainment customers choose when to want their
content to their decoders favourite programmes
• The main method of the broadcast is via • They do not have to watch at the scheduled
satellite/transmitters broadcast time
• Customers must watch the programmes • This is available using personal video
on their scheduled time and can follow recorders (PVR)
the schedule (TV Guide) to see when their
favourite programme is on air
• This is accessible to all the decoders

Installation Requirements
1. Installation - DStv Explora 2
Installation of the DStv Explora 2 requires an 80cm satellite dish together with a DStv Smart LNB.
The Smart LNB feeds multiple decoders in the home with satellite services.
Benefits of the DStv Smart LNB
✓ The DStv Smart LNB has been specially designed for use in non-commercial DStv installations
✓ It is a high band capable, ensuring that the installation can receive these signals in the future
✓ Multiple decoders can be connected to the DStv Smart LNB without the need for a
multiswitch / DStv Switch (which saves the customer money)
✓ The cable goes directly from the DStv Smart LNB to the decoder. The result is:
• A shorter cable run
• Decoders can now be placed in different rooms. This means a more flexible
installation (including easier connections between HD decoders and HD TVs via HDMI
cables)
✓ Where the DStv Smart LNB is installed, the customer does not have to change their LNB when
upgrading to XtraView. The Smart LNB will provide enough user bands to supply up to three
PVRs, each with up to eight tuners.
Integrated Training Guide General Customer Care V1.3 278
2018/10/26
Integrated Training Guide General Customer Care
✓ The DStv Smart LNB has 24 user bands, 4 unicable outputs (BLUE) and 2 universal outputs
(WHITE)
The Smart LNB will act as a common connecting point for all decoders in the home and allow
MoCa (Multimedia over Co-axial) communications between them. The Smart LNB supports legacy
STBs as it has two universal outputs.
The diagram shows the fully connected setup.

2. Installation - DStv Explora 1
DStv Explora Switch (5-1) & Connections
The DStv Switch (5-1) is bought separately and converts normal LNB to UniCable. It can only
connect to one DStv Explora at a time.
1. 4 LNB inputs (H/L, VL, HH & V/H)
2. 2 DStv Explora outputs: can ONLY be connected to DStv Explora, NOT designed to work on
other decoder models
3. 4 Multiswitch outputs: each output signals a signal equivalent to a normal Multiswitch
output or a single LNB output
4. On light: the blue light switches on when the DStv Switch (5-1) is powered. It does, however,
not indicate whether the switch is getting sufficient signal
• Unused ports do not need to be capped (covered) as the DStv Switch (5-1) self-
terminates any unused ports
• The DStv Switch (5-1) is not required when connecting DStv Explora to the existing single
cable distribution system found in MUDS and SMUDS, however, this is dependent on the
installation setup by the body corporate concerned
• DStv Switch (5-1) is not a signal booster

Setting up the DStv Explora to an existing installation
Installation of the DStv Explora requires a UniCableTM / SatCR LNB or the minimum of a Twin LNB
in combination with the DStv Switch.
• Installation of the DStv Explora with a Twin / Quad / Quattro LNB can only be done in
combination with the DStv Switch
• A 90-cm dish is highly recommended for DStv Explora 1
Network configuration
The DStv Explora has 3 tuners all bundled together on a single cable, and is populated with
default values:
• Record
• Live
• Dedicated VOD
Default Tuner Values
Tuners Home Network Frequency
Tuner 1 Frequency 1210
Tuner 2 Frequency 1420
Tuner 3 Frequency 1680
Tuner 1 Index 0
Tuner 2 Index 1
Tuner 3 Index 2
The customer should be able to connect to the satellite with these default values set and these
values should not be changed unless the customer is connecting to SMATV installation (an
accredited DStv Installer must be used).

the feed is split.
• The maximum cable length between the DStv Switch and DStv Explora should be less
than 50 meters
• Maximum cable length between 2 DStv Switch (when cascading to connect 2 Explora 1’s

The performance of the DStv Explora’s and availability of all features is directly related to
the quality of the installation (including the use of approved equipment and correct alignment of
the satellite dish.
✓ Once the DStv Explora 2 has been correctly connected to the satellite dish and switched
on, there is an Installation Wizard to guide you through the first-time set-up
✓ The customer must contact us to activate the new DStv Explora 2 on Clarity

✓ Model LMX500
✓ Model LMX501
Step 4:
Once the installer has selected a
Decoder Setup type for each
decoder, predefined User Band will
be allocated to each set up, and
the User Band allocation will be as
follows:
✓ For Decoder 1 – 0, 1, and 2
✓ For Decoder 2 – 5, 6, and 7
✓ For Decoder 3 – 3, 4, and 8
This accommodates XtraView with two decoders combinations with HD PVRs which use
user bands 0,1,2,3 by default. In this scenario, the HD PVR would use 0, 1, 2, 3 and
Explora would be decoder 2 (5, 6, 7). HD PVR can’t be in XtraView with three decoders, so
we use 3, 4, 8 for decoder 3.
