UNIVERSITY MACE

The mace has gradually assumed a purely ceremonial character symbolizing the
authority of the Board of Regents, The Texas State University System and the Office of
the President of Lamar University.
The Lamar University mace is traditional in design. The walnut shaft is crowned by a
wooden cube. Each side features a representation of Lamar University’s seal, against a
background of red velvet.
The president of the Faculty Senate, who leads the academic processional, carries the
mace in today’s ceremony.

ACADEMIC GONFALONS

Gonfalons, banners that are designed to hang from a crossbar,
have historical roots dating back to the 12th century when they
served as the official emblems to represent the various districts of
Florence, Italy. In more recent times, gonfalons have been adopted
by academia to serve as symbols to represent each college within
a university. Each college has their own representative banner with
the dean from the respective college or an appointed designee
carrying the gonfalon in the academic processional.

GUIDELINES FOR GUESTS

Commencement is a significant and solemn event, the recognition of years of study. To maintain the dignity of the
ceremony, guests and participants are requested to refrain from unnecessary noises (air horns, etc.) and movement during
the ceremony. Only the official photographer is allowed on the arena floor.

Although this day is about personal

have encouraged you to continue to pursue your goals and inspired you to

COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER Dr. Kenneth R. Evans (Ken) is the fifteenth president of Lamar University.
DR. KENNETH EVANS He began at LU in July 2013, after more than six years as dean and Fred
E. Brown Chair at the Michael F. Price College of Business at the University
of Oklahoma. Prior to OU, Evans served in a variety of administrative roles
at the University of Missouri-Columbia, where he also held the Pinkney C.
Walker Professorship, and at Arizona State University, serving as a faculty
member in marketing.
Evans received his doctorate from the University of Colorado, his MBA
from California State University-Sacramento and his undergraduate degree
from the University of California-Davis. His research has been published in
the most prestigious marketing and business academic journals and has
received national and international recognition for his contributions in many
of these publications. Evans is an award-winning teacher and has been
particularly recognized for his work in the design and implementation of
interactive learning experiences and graduate education. Additionally, he
has been acknowledged for his role in building program initiatives that
provide primarily undergraduate students access to opportunities to study
abroad.
Major initiatives by Evans at all three of his previous academic institutions
were focused on improving faculty quality in research and teaching, design
and implementation of new programming and recruiting and retention of
high quality students. His time at LU has been no different. The success
he has had, along with that of each of the universities he has served, is
grounded in the partnerships struck with the community, business and other
key stakeholders.
Prior to entering academe, Evans worked in the transportation industry in
various marketing and sales capacities and has been actively involved in
sales and sales management consulting in the banking industry, convention
sales and financial services.

REAUD HONORS
A Farewell Letter to our Graduates
Dear Graduates,
It is my absolute honor to congratulate you on behalf
of the Reaud Honors College at Lamar University. You
have taken a huge step toward fulfilling your lifelong
goals and dreams, and there are many amazing
opportunities that lie ahead for you.
Simon Sinek (2009) stated, “…achievement comes
when you pursue and attain what you want; success
comes when you are clear in pursuit of WHY you want
it” (Sinek, 2009). It is my hope that as you reflect on
your learning journey over the past several years, you
have been able to identify your passion and inspiration along the way. If you have, I
encourage you to articulate your passion and share your inspiration in everything you do
and every decision you make, and most importantly, learn to inspire others the way you
have been inspired.
As you navigate the next steps in your journey, learn how to turn your greatest struggle
into your largest gain. When success doesn’t come easy, dig deep and become a positive
deviant, even if that means stepping away from what you would normally do. Embrace
the “messiness” of learning and understand that failure is measured by YOUR definition
of the word. Life will consistently test your perseverance, but grit and persistence will help
you move the needle on your wildly important goals. Try to lead as you serve others, and
spend time building relationships with all kinds of people, especially with folks that are
different than you. And above all, listen intently and care about others as you grow and
learn; you may be surprised at who will become your greatest asset and an integral part
of your journey along the way.
We know you will be successful in all that you do moving forward, and we are proud to call
you a Lamar University Reaud Honors College graduate! Our door is always open, and we
invite you to stay connected with us so you can come back and share your inspirational

Graduation is a starting point, one that marks your
professional contribution to the greater good of
an interconnected global community. With the
knowledge and skills you have acquired through your
graduate studies, you are well positioned to make an
impact – be it advancing technologies, developing
solutions, pursuing entrepreneurship, educating the
next generation, exploring the unknown or creating
performance art. Choose the specialty you do best
and make a positive difference – wherever you are in

The College of Arts and Sciences proudly
encompasses a wide range of interconnected

BUSINESS It is a special honor for me to celebrate your
graduation from Lamar this semester. This
celebration is the culmination of your years of
diligent work and energy focused on achieving
your degree. In addition to your studies, you and
your classmates have overcome multiple severe
weather events and an unexpected health crisis.
Your efforts are paying off, and they will continue
to reward you throughout your life and career with
expanded horizons and greater opportunities.
In August of 1973, I proudly received my BA
degree from LU. Our university unlocked a whole
new world of knowledge and new opportunity for me. For these gifts I am and
forever will be grateful to be a Lamar Cardinal.
Graduates, as you mark this milestone in your life, take those lessons that you have
learned from our faculty along with those experiences you have had being part of
the Lamar spirit and diverse student body and pass that knowledge and spirit on
to others.
As you move through your career and life, please consider sharing your knowledge
and experiences with future Lamar students. Come back to campus to give a guest
talk to a class, participate in a panel session, or recruit some of our graduates for
your organization. Attend sporting events, enjoy our art museum, and take part in
events sponsored by our Alumni Affairs!

HUMAN DEVELOPMENT To the Graduating Class of 2021,
This moment allows me the special opportunity to
extend my sincere and enthusiastic congratulations
to you. Graduates, commencement is the beginning
and accordingly another typical day of anxiety
of “am I ready and what next.” If anyone is able
to tackle those questions face first, it’s you. You
are stronger because of what you experienced,
and you can do anything. There are so many
opportunities right around the corner waiting for
you to explore; enjoy the exploration. You are
the seeds of our future, and it is time for you to
embrace your passion and work for it. You have all
completed a program of studies, which has taught you to think critically, to express
opinions in a civilized manner, to evaluate options, to make informed decisions and
to move forward in life. It helps you develop confidence in yourself and what you
believe. This moment attests that you are indeed ready for what is to come. By any
standard or measure, you are positioned to join the educational elite in our society.
You have completed a difficult, taxing and costly journey from where you started
years ago. It is important to take this moment to appreciate and celebrate what you

ENGINEERING
Dear Graduates of Spring 2021, Families and Friends:
On behalf of the Lamar University Administration,
the College of Engineering Leadership Team, and
faculty and staff of your academic department, I offer
my congratulations on achieving this very significant
milestone. Each of you has worked hard to get this
point, with the guidance and support of family, friends,
and Lamar University (LU) faculty and staff. This
commencement ceremony has three purposes; the first
is to formally celebrate your achievement, the second
is to thank those who helped you along the way, and
the third is to mark the beginning of next phase of your
life.
When you walk out of these doors as LU graduates, you will set new goals, and I know you
will pursue them with the same or even higher levels of dedication. My wish for you is that
you set the right goals. Set them high enough that you must work both smart and hard
to achieve them, and then feel the satisfaction that comes from seeing your work and
preparation pay off. The key to success is to focus on goals, not obstacles. For as many
have noted, success lies at the intersection of hard work and preparation.
In your years at LU, you have been prepared and encouraged to pursue learning as a life-
long endeavor. Always seek new knowledge, because the world is changing faster than
ever before, and you will benefit from remaining curious and increasing your skills.Along
the lines of life-long learning, I would like to extend an offer to each of our undergraduate
engineering graduates to continue your education in one of our master’s degree programs
and will waive the GRE requirement and application fees.
Socrates said, “the unexamined life is not worth living.” Continue to question your path,
always mindful of your ultimate goals. If you find that your desires change, never be afraid
to change course and set new goals so that you can achieve success.
In closing, I ask that you remain engaged with Lamar University. I encourage you to
support LU by joining the LU alumni association, participating in programs, sharing
your LU experience with others, and I hope that you will keep us updated on your many
achievements to come.

FINE ARTS & COMMUNICATION
Earning a university degree is one of the highest
accomplishments one can achieve. Earning it under
the most challenging circumstances, such as a global
pandemic, makes it even more admirable and special.
While I regret that you are graduating under such
demanding circumstances, it also is proof of your
extraordinary perseverance and grit. Congratulations!
You should be proud of yourself and will most likely
never forget this moment, when you had to forego
celebrating one of your most special milestones with
family, friends and peers. I hope you will find a moment
to celebrate this life changing event with your loved
ones. I, the faculty and staff of the College of Fine Arts
and Communication are all celebrating your success,
perseverance and tenacity in obtaining your degree in spirit, if not in the flesh.
Nobody achieves success alone. The people whose moral, financial and mentoring
support made today possible for our graduates should also be recognized, among
them the faculty members of this college, who have had their own challenges during the
pandemic. I thank them in particular, because,like you, they had to pivot midstream to
ensure your success. I know they once again demonstrated the extent to which they care
about each student individually.
As the dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communication, I am very proud of the
diversity in our college, not only in terms of human diversity, but also disciplinary diversity.
From art, music, theatre and dance, to communication, media, deaf studies and deaf
education, and speech and hearing sciences, the ultimate aim of all these programs is
to make our lives better and improve our communities and our society. That is the one
common bond we all have in the college - faculty and students alike. As our successful
students leave us to move forward on their career paths, I hope that is the one goal you
will continue to strive for.
I also hope that you will return as alumni or as graduate students. You will soon realize
that lifelong learning will be an essential part of your future. Remember, Lamar University
is always here to offer an opportunity. We will welcome you back in your role as mentors
and role models for our students and hopefully also as graduate students. This will be
your academic home forever.

point average with a minimum of sixty semester hours earned at Lamar University for a four year degree. The
distinction and corresponding grade point averages are: Cum Laude 3.5 to 3.64; Magna Cum Laude 3.65 to
3.79; Summa Cum Laude 3.8 to 4.0. To reflect their achievement, graduates who have earned Latin Honors
receive a red and white double cord.

Honors are designated only for undergraduate students completing their baccalaureate degrees.
The only honors recognized on-stage at commencement are Latin honors and Reaud Honors College.

ACADEMIC REGALIA

The academic regalia worn at American university
exercises, originated in the Middle Ages. The
oldest universities grew out of church schools, and
both faculty and students were regarded as part of
the clergy. Hence, they wore robes as part of their
costume, borrowed largely from the monastic dress
of their day. Today, there is a Code on Academic
Costume, detailing appropriate regalia attire.
The cap, the square mortarboard in American
universities for undergraduate and master’s students
and a round, short, flat velvet cap for doctoral
students. The cap is always black and should match
the material of the robe.
The gown is usually black. The bachelor’s gown has
pointed sleeves and the master’s gown has long
pouch-like sleeves. Doctoral gowns are faced with
velvet down the front and three bars of velvet across
each sleeve.
The hood, worn around the neck and hanging in the
back, is the principal emblem of the nature and source
of the degree held. The colors in the hood lining are
the colors of the school conferring the degree. The
color of the border indicates the scholarly field of
study.
