50 YEARS IN RETROSPECT

From the Principal’s desk

This year we celebrated 50 years of quality technical public education here at
Bellville Technical High School. For 50 years, BTHS has strived to be a unifying
resource to the community we serve, a symbol of optimism and hope for
technical students, where they enter to learn and leave to lead.

More than 50 years ago, on 3 August 1971 the establishment and foundation of
our school was approved by the Department of education. The school officially
opened on 13 October 1972 when the first principal, Mr Smit and Deputy
principal, Mr De Swardt set foot on the school premises for the very first time.

Back in the day the school comprised of classrooms, an office and staffroom –
and assemblies were to be held in the Mechanical workshop at the time. On 20
January 1972, 77 grade 8 boys (or standard 6 boys as they were called those
days) and 13 teachers entered our school gates with the prospect that
technical and academic subjects will be taught up to grade 10 later on, in 1978
the first two girls were enrolled at the school. Today, we have 726 boys and 338
girls, 1064 learners and 53 teachers. 2022 (50 years later) the advances in
educational theory and practice from the 1970s until today have been
profound, not only in South Africa, but worldwide.

We now live in a global society, where information is instantaneous and demands for quality education as a pathway
to better career opportunities, and quality of life, have never been higher. The classrooms of the 1970’s have
dramatically changed, with significant progress in Information Communication Technologies; Pedagogy; National
Professional Teaching Standards; Teachers Training at Universities; Professional Learning; Performance Management;
Curriculum; Access; and Parity in Salaries.

For those who have not stepped into a classroom for a few years or even longer, you will see first-hand what I am
talking about. Long gone are the “chalk and talk days”! However, one constant that hasn’t changed is the importance
of education in making a “real difference” to lives. Our mission here at Bellville Technical High School is to, “Create
Opportunities “, by preparing learners for vocational advancement and tertiary levels for the needs of a future career
in the corporate world.

Here at Bellville Technical High School, we shall continue to build our Hatties’ futures by focusing on constant
innovation and best practices in the 21st century. We will continue to shape innovative leaders for the future by
intentionally inculcating problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity, citizenship and resilience into their wiring. We will
continue to equip young people with the knowledge, understanding, skills and values for life. To this end, schools play
a vital role in promoting the intellectual, physical, social, emotional, moral, spiritual and aesthetic development and
wellbeing of all young Hatties. This very point is not lost here at Bellville Technical High School, as we together, as
students, parents, educators and community are building the future. There will always be change and challenges
ahead of us to conquer, such is the nature of life, and I wonder what education will look like in another 50 years given
the changes over the past 50, but rest assured, the quality of education, with its innovation, creativity, opportunities,
values and standards will not diminish here at Bellville Technical High School.

Many thanks to the legacy of previous principals, Nolte Smit, Jock de Jager and Leon Roelofse. Also all previous
learners and teachers that walked in the buildings and on the grounds of this prestigious facility. Your contribution is
etched into the history of Bellville Technical High School. 50 years is an incredible legacy of achievement to celebrate.
We hope you’ll join us in turning your eyes to the future as we celebrate the past, and imagine the next 50 years.

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE!

An overview from our Marketing & Media Manager – L Van Vuuren

For 50 years, BTHS has strived to be a unifying resource to the community we serve, a symbol of optimism and hope
for technical students, where they enter to learn and leave to lead.

As we look back on the last 50 years, we look back on a legacy of achievement. What a legacy BTHS has built.
Our school’s mission began as an idea… an ideal shared by visionaries who looked beyond the horizon and
imagined a school that would serve our technical students – building and shaping the futures of young technical
professionals.
That vision has served as a guiding light over the years, and it has grown from a single idea to a beacon of
knowledge and a brilliant foundation for our school. Together as a school we have shared that vision with the
students we serve, and our students, spread out over the last 50 years, have made it their own – through their
determination and drive and desire to become successful technical professionals one day.

As principal Koopman mentioned, 50 years is an incredible legacy of achievement to celebrate. We hope you’ll
join us in turning your eyes to the future as we celebrate the past, and imagine the next 50 years. Imagine how
bright that future is now. Imagine the endless possibilities of what we can achieve working together. Let’s keep
building our Hatties’ futures! This year was filled with CELEBRATIONS. We celebrated our milestones, achievements,
learners, educators and staff. In our 50th Anniversary Celebrations’ Yearbook we look at our celebratory year in
retrospect and share all the highlights with you.

A TRIBUTE TO OUR LATE PRINCIPALS

OUR NOLTE SMIT SCHOOL HALL IN LOVING MEMORY OF

MR SMIT

PRINCIPAL FROM 1971-1985

Mr J.H.N. (Nolte) Smit, the first HTS Bellville THS Principal for 14
years, passed away on 30 July 2021. Mr Smit was involved in
numerous aspects of our school’s foundation and development.

He wrote our school anthem (1979), assisted with the design of
our school emblem and motto (amongst many other
contributions). He succeeded as principal, paving and
pioneering the way for Technical Schools in those years until he
was promoted to the position of Superintendent of Education and
Teaching Guidance in Kimberley by the Department of Basic
Education in June 1985. In 1991 he was promoted again and was
appointed as the Head Inspector of Education in the Eastern
Cape. He retired five years later at the age of 59 in 1996.

During his visit to the school in 2017, he shared some of his
fondest memories as principal with our management team. How
he visited primary schools to recruit learners and how they
started the school with only 77 learners and 13 teachers. He also
shared some memories of the first hall assembly, held in the
motor mechanics workshop as there was no school hall in those
years.

Mr Smit was actively involved in extramural activities and
loved cultural activities such as the Tygerberg Eisteddfod
(chairman 1978/1979). He was a true people’s person. In his last
circular to Hattie parents in 1985 he wrote that being a principal
wasn’t only a task or career choice to him but a life calling and
way of life.

In addition, Mr Smit was a qualified pilot, chairman of the
SAOU, author of a book about Afrikaans history (written in
association with Vriende vir Afrikaans) and obtained five degrees
(including a Master’s degree in Education) in his lifespan. He was
happily married to his beloved wife, Mrs Annatjie Smit for 62,5
years. He also had a son, Nolte Smit (Deputy Head boy at BTHS,
1981) and a daughter, Elaine Smit. Rest in peace Mr Smit.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF
MR ROELOFSE

PRINCIPAL FROM 1993 - 2014

Mr Roelofse, our beloved HTS Bellville THS Principal for 21 years, the
third and longest running principal of our school passed away on
March 21, 2021.

Mr Roelofse obtained a M Ed qualification in Staff Development and
was respected for his financial prowess, successfully steering the
school to financial stability. Five computer labs, school hostel, the
pavilion and the current mathematical classes (to name a few) were
the brain child of our late principal. Furthermore, Mr Roelofse was
actively involved in sports and a true people’s person.

He was well loved by the staff and learners of our school. On the day
of his birthday learners gave him special treats and flocked to his
office for a hug and to give him their best wishes.

Mr Roelofse was a man of integrity and honour, always bearing the
interest of the staff and learners in the highest regard. Mr Roelofse
was married to his beloved wife, An-mare and they also had two
sons, Lean and Ruan – rest in peace Mr Roelofse.

2022 HEAD LEARNERS

Greetings, fellow Hatties, I want to congratulate you on making it this far.
We’ve been celebrating our school’s 50th anniversary this year - I wish
everyone the best of luck and would like to encourage you to keep
going and pushing forward. The hard work you put in now will pay off in
the end; don't give up; keep trying, even if it's just small steps forward;
after all, small steps forward are better than no steps forward. "A little
progress each day adds up to a big result," was a great quote I heard
that really helped me. BTHS I wish you all the best for the future.

AYDEN KIEWIETS CHULUMANCO
HEAD BOY FIKIZOLO
HEAD GIRL
What an honour it has been to be the head girl of BTHS in its 50th
anniversary year. Always remember, when failing at something we tend
to give up quickly but when you try hard you never know what you can
accomplish. To all the matrics of 2022: I’d like to congratulate you guys
on making it through the year. Remember, many of life’s failures are
people who did not realise how close they were to success before they
gave up.

“Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations!”
Hatties, may all your dreams come true!

LLOYD NKALA You think “problems” are roadblocks to achieving what you want, when
DEPUTY in reality they are pathways.
Marcus Aurelius sums this up well: “The impediment to action advances
HEAD BOY action. What stands in the way becomes the way.” Simply, running into a
“problem” forces you to take action to resolve it. That action will
inevitably lead you to think differently, behave differently, and choose
differently.
Nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it , all the best to all Hatties.
This year was a memorable one, celebrating 50 years of excellence at
BTHS! We most definitely ended our high school career on a high!

Over this past year we, as Bellville Technical High School learners, have
been working extremely hard, especially the Grade 11s and matrics.

Here is a small quote for my fellow pupils: “The harder you work for
something, the greater you will feel when you finally achieve it."

You have to work hard for what you want and not give up. Keep on ROBYN WERTH
pushing through the tough times remember: “Tough times never last, only DEPUTY
tough people do.“ We’ve been privileged to be part of our school’s 50th
Anniversary celebrations – ending our matric year on all time high! HEAD GIRL

2022 EXTRAMURAL ACTIVITIES

An overview of our top sports teams

2022 RUGBY OVERVIEW BY COACH BEUKES: We were so happy and fortunate to have rugby back in 2022
after the game was suspended for almost two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pandemic had a huge impact on our boys as we started our season slow with losing a few close
games in the first quarter of the season but as the season progressed we were a much better group as we
won four out of our six games, ending our season with a bang! The most memorable game of the year was
the clean sweep against our rivals De Kuilen High School where we saw all our teams winning their games.

We welcomed a big group of U14 players into our Dragons setup this year and they displayed
outstanding discipline on and off the field as a group for 2022 - the future looks bright indeed.

Our U15 Rugby team won sports team of the year at our annual prize-giving ceremony, as they held our
name high on the rugby field winning big games against Bellville High, Milnerton High, DF Malan and an
unbeaten De Kuilen. They surely deserved their award. Well done to the boys and coaches.

2022 NETBALL OVERVIEW BY COACH FEAST: After two years of
COVID-19 restrictions, no practices nor any sports games, we
started with a bang this year! We had four complete netball
teams and we are aiming to have two complete teams per
age group next year. The U14 and U16 teams had good wins
and some losses this season, but we will definitely build on our
experience and implement the lessons we’ve learnt for next
year. The first team played ten league games, of which they
won six, drew one and lost three. I'm extremely proud of all my
netball girls and we are excited to take Hattie netball to the
next level in the next few years.

HATTIE SPORTS ARE THRIVING 2022 SOCCER OVERVIEW BY COACH KOTE: Our Hattie
soccer club is one that grew rapidly due to the interest
shown by the boys and the enthusiasm that they have for
the sport, coupled with their hunger to showcase their
skills and win for the school.
My initial concern was that students who showed interest
would lack the consistency and diligence needed to
make it truly successful. My concern was proven invalid
as time went by and all students involved, displayed the
conviction to improve their skills, especially those who
really love the sport and their school. On the whole, we
won a good number of matches but the real victory was
managing to have consistent practises and creating a
respectful environment for all the soccer boys.

BTHS STER CLUB – AN OVERVIEW BY MS BRUCE: This year our
school's first ever STER CLUB (Science, Technology, Engineering,
Robotics) was established.
Our Hattie scientists did some weekly experiments and gained
some scientific knowledge in various science fields such as:
Engineering by developing a structure that could protect an
egg from breaking if it drops from a height. Learners had to
make a continuous loop from a piece of paper large enough
to fit over a person, creating elephant toothpaste using yeast
and hydrogen peroxide, biology – dissecting organs as well as
the basics of coding – learning how to code a basic html
website. These are only a few of the experiments our Hattie
scientists in the making participated in this year. It was great
fun.

HATTIE PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB

An overview by Mrs Lourens

Our Hattie cell phone photography club was started this year under the guidance of Mrs Lourens and Ms
Visagie. The club has its own webpage, www.bths.co.za/photo where learners can register to participate in
monthly photo competitions, as well as view and vote for photos taken by other learners. The aim of the club
is to have fun while being challenged to be creative. We aim to get learners outside and to look at the world
from a different perspective.
The theme of the first competition was Nature and the top three photos for this competition was taken by
Moses Munengami in gr. 11 (winner) Connor van Ster in gr. 12 (runner up) and Eduarda Lugato in gr. 11 (in
third place).

Other competitions included themes such as: The streets I walk in (September), Happiness (October) and
Contrasting colours (November). Due to interest from the learners, the club is already looking at the
possibility of expanding and including a digital photography competition in the future. We are looking
forward to seeing more of our Hatties’ hidden talents!

WCED TECHNICAL SKILLS COMPETITION 2022

An overview by Mr Conradie – Acting Deputy Principal (SGB)

We were the proud hosts of the WCED Technical Skills Competition for 2022.
AIM OF COMPETITION: To promote skilled technical trades, and to showcase various career options in these areas.
PARTICIPANTS: Grades 10 and 11 learners from various technical schools in the Western Cape, competed in various areas
of the different technical subjects.
AN OVERVIEW: The competition officially started on Friday evening, 16 September 2022 with a gala evening in the school
hall. Officials from the DBE, WCED Technical, organisers, and teachers whose learners were competing in the
competition and members of relevant NGO’s were invited. On Saturday morning, 17 September 2022, the workshops
started buzzing as the contestants used power tools, welding machines, cutters, grinders, cement mixers and hand tools
to demonstrate their skills.
In the electrical workshop contestants had to wire a distribution board and associated power circuits on a simulated
domestic wiring board, do the sequential starting of a motor and light on the motor benches and concluded with a
secret impromptu soldering activity.

In the construction workshop, learners built a wall which was tested for strength when the adjudicators tried to kick it
over. Our Hattie contestant, Jadon Hendricks, under guidance of Mr Bodenstein, came third in the Construction
category.
Contestants in the welding and metalwork workshop had to make an angle bracket, a piece of flat bar consisting of
drilling, sawing and filing and they had to do a corner joint weld. The contestant from our school, Waheed Isaacs, under
guidance of our new welding teacher, Ms K van Oordt won the first prize in the welding and metalwork category.

WCED TECHNICAL SKILLS COMPETITION 2022

In woodworking they built a table with bowed parts within the very short time span of five hours. Our Hattie contestant,
Channing Warrin, under guidance of Mr Stander won the second prize in the woodworking category.

The automotive contestants measured brake systems, engine cylinder ovality, had to remove wheels from new cars
borrowed from Toyota for the event.

In fitting and machining they had to cut and form pieces of metal and turn a work piece on the metal lathes.

The new subject, Civil Services, earned a special mention as their contestants had to build a complete bathroom with
toilet, basin and associated plumbing.

WCED TECHNICAL SKILLS COMPETITION 2022

Engineering Graphics and Design had to draw house plans.

The way that all Grade 10 and 11 learners/participants showcased the skills they developed in only one or two years,
was most impressive to observe during this prestigious occasion.
The first prize in EGD was worth R55 000 with a second prize in cash of R15 000. Other prize-winners received power tools,
instruments and tool boxes to name just a few of the prizes sponsored by our generous sponsors from the technical
industry.
The event was a major success with parents, subject advisors and teachers praising our school, the premises, workshops,
and learners who all contributed towards the overall success of the event.
A huge thanks to all stakeholders involved! We are looking forward to next year’s WCED Technical Skills Competition – to
showcase the incredible talents and skills of our technical learners and to promote the importance of the development
of technical skills to empower our youth and prepare them for the 21st Century.

AN OVERVIEW OF OUR CELEBRATIONS

50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

An Overview by Ms Brown – our 50th Anniversary Celebrations Coordinator

It was an eventful year, kicking off the 50 year celebrations with a Thanksgiving Service
on the 12th of May 2022, where we brought honour to God for the prosperity of our
school. Despite facing many challenges and tribulations, HTS Bellville THS is still
standing. Dignified guests and friends of our school had been wowed by our learners'
talents and oratory skills. Afterwards they enjoyed some refreshments in the foyer
whilst they reminisced and enjoyed the rest of the afternoon with us.
The following day was one which many learners won't easily forget. On the 13th of May
2022 our learners were also entertained with cupcakes and beverages whilst being
inspired by a former Hattie and current Springbok rugby player, Mr Marvin Orrie.
In August the parents joined in the celebrations with a celebratory Winter Dance, they
attended the dance and enjoyed themselves thoroughly. Some of our colleagues also
formed part of the happy crowd, proving that they could give the other guests a run for
their money on the dance floor.
Our final project in conclusion of our year of festivities was burying a time capsule,
followed by the printing of a special edition yearbook to highlight the celebrations of
HTS BELLVILLE THS as being 50 years in existence.

A special word of gratitude to all the role-players contributing towards the
success of our school’s 50th Birthday Celebrations.

50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

HATTIE TIME CAPSULE

As part of our 50th anniversary celebrations, Mr Nel, the vice principal, suggested the planting/burying of a time
capsule. We realise the importance of 50 years of existence and our heartfelt prayer and wish is for another 50 and even
100 years of our school being an educational institution of note. The contents and burying of the capsule symbolise and
also prove the reality of our time: life as it is today as well as the challenges of the past two and a half years. The specific
purpose of our school as a technical school, is also emphasised by the tools and pictures being part of the content of
the capsule. May this capsule, when opened in 50 years, in the year 2072 give insight to our generations to come in our
current life as we knew it in 2022 in our 50th anniversary year of Bellville THS.

LIST OF THE CONTENT INSIDE THE HATTIE TIME CAPSULE: Set of ordinary stationery, set of technical and drawing

equipment, Rule book of rugby (2010), Wooden carving of the school emblem, Masks depicting Covid-19 Pandemic,

School building 1972, Money and monetary value of products in 2022, Term 3, 2022 circular with school fees (R16500 per
year), Collage of school events of 2022, School policy, Former administrative stationery, Covid-19 Pandemic leaflets and

MATRIC FAREWELL
Principal’s speech

Class of 2022, you lived through the century's great recession as students, and you
started your senior phase of high school during the global Covid-19 pandemic.
You don't need a lesson in resilience. You are a lesson in resilience.
You are part of the best-educated, most diverse generation ever, idealistic, creative,
determined. You just don't give up. And thank goodness for that, because you're going to
need every bit of it in the world you're going to face.
To be honest with you, the world's in a bit of a state these days. The planet is overheated,
the economy isn't working very well for a lot of people, and even democracy is under fire
in this country.
But the good news is, that it means that there is important work waiting for you as
graduates, and a chance to make a change.
I commend you for finishing your high school career in the face of many challenges.
After learning remotely, after masks being on and off, as a class you have persevered.
As a principal, the greatest joy and privilege over the last four years has been to watch
students grow "through thick and thin."
I've noticed three traits in the Class of 2022 that deeply impressed me, Your commitment
to justice, the way you love kindness and the way you give credit to others.
I want to leave you with the following: Remember the original meaning of the word
"courage" (from the Latin "cor") was to speak one's mind by telling all one's heart. This
definition, means to be vulnerable and to be brave enough to fail.
If you can learn to embrace uncertainty, and vulnerability, which you all have, you can
accomplish anything you set your mind to.

Class of 2022 we salute you!

OYEARS OF EXCELLENCE

P5rincipal speech VALEDICTORY1972-2022

Good morning Class of 2022, parents and staff
I would like to add my own warm welcome to everyone here today. It’s a little difficult to start with anything
other than to say – congratulations!

What an incredible group of people you are, particularly as you have succeeded against the backdrop of the
pandemic. I have to tell you all that I am humbled, massively proud, delighted and, most of all, extremely
impressed by your collective diligence and determination. Through hard work and dedication, all of you have
achieved something remarkable - you've reached the end of your high school careers. Today you have the
opportunity to celebrate and reflect on your high school years with your family and friends. I am sure you
will agree with me that typically in life, you only ever get out what you put in. With your final NSC exams
nearing, remember this and ensure that you put in a huge amount of effort so that you can reap the fruits of
your hard work at the end of the year!

I also want you to look forward and consider the future and the positive impact which your potential newly
gained qualifications and skills can have on the improvement of the environment and, even more
importantly, on the lives of the people who live, work and play within it. Let us be in absolutely no doubt –
more than ever, the world needs a better, safer and more sustainable technical environment. Global citizens
surely have, as a minimum, a right to expect that? The challenges, of course, are now greater and more
complex than ever: fast-growing populations; rapid urbanisation; climate change leading to the need for more
resilient buildings; smart cities and buildings coupled with the general pace of technological change; off-site
(and on-site) manufacturing techniques including 3D-printing; infrastructure and transport solutions on a
scale never seen before… the list goes on and it certainly is extensive.

Now that you will potentially be qualified soon, I’d like you to consider it your professional responsibility to
be the guardians of our substantial, precious and highly intricate environment – whether it relates to future
builds and newly constructed buildings, those buildings which are being restored, preserved or regenerated,
those being maintained and updated, or just simply being used.
We need solutions which are creative, innovative and which will serve future generations. We need people
now who understand a long-term, human-centric approach to the technical environment, who are sensitive to
and appreciative of the natural environment within which our buildings sit, and people who (most
importantly) are unerring in upholding the highest professional standards and quality. The Technical sector
needs you more than ever and I feel confident and more relaxed knowing that our Hattie graduates will
continue to be at the centre of exceptional solutions for the future environment.

Equally, as a result, our role is more important than ever. You’ll be aware that we have been celebrating our
50th year of excellence at Bellville Technical High School this year and from our humble beginnings in 1972
following the institution’s foundation to mould innovative leaders for the future and to equip our learners
with the required technical knowledge and skills to make a useful contribution in society and to build their
futures. We strive to provide truly accessible, relevant and cost-effective education, enabling students to
enhance careers, increase professionalism and contribute to a better technical environment. We want to
make sure we are equipping each and every possible Hattie student with the necessary skills to ensure the
technical environment of tomorrow is an exceptional one.

That is what makes Bellville Technical High School different, makes us special and, I firmly believe, makes us
better. Before I finish, I would like to pause and take a moment to thank all our educators who were involved
in your educational journey the past five years. Thank you for your diligence and hard work and for being a
guiding light for our class of 2022. In closing, and most importantly, remain focussed and ensure that you
put in the required effort during your upcoming NSC Final exams in order to achieve the outcome your heart
desires. Celebrate with your families and friends who have supported you. Thank them for their valued
support and sacrifices which were an integral part of your studies, and make them even more proud of you as
you develop your careers and help to create a better environment.

Class of 2022 - all the best for your future endeavours, may all your dreams come true.
