The University is situated in the City of Szeged (the fourth largest city in Hungary) and has many ties to
great masters and noted musicians, such as Franz Liszt who spent many years studying here. Béla Bartók
debuted as a composer here in 1910 and Zoltán Kodály was born just 50 miles away. Others include
renowned conductor Ferenc Fricsay, pianist György Sebők and pianist/composer Jenő Huszka to name but
a few…

National Theater, Szeged The Faculty of Music had operated as part of the Franz Liszt Academy of
Music until 1998; and soon after became the 11th faculty of the University of
Szeged. The impressive performance venues available to our students
include: the Fricsay Ferenc Concert Hall, Liszt Ferenc Chamber Hall as well as
student access to the Reök Palace and the National Theater of Szeged.

In addition to offering Bachelor and Master’s Degrees in Performance as well as Music Education, our International
Performing Faculty ensures that the long legacy and rich traditions of Hungarian music is carried on.

Local Credits:

Since Hungary is a member of the European Union, Hungarian higher education institutions are part of the
European Higher Education Area. Credits and degrees gained in Hungary are transferable to other European
institutions. An ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) equivalent system was introduced in Hungary in
September 2003 to be applied in all higher education institutions. The minimum credit number for a
Bachelor’s degree is 180, for a Master’s degree it is 120.

The main objective of the introduction of the credit system was to harmonize the education systems of the
different member countries and to facilitate student mobility. As a result, higher education institutions in Europe will
recognize credits earned in a Hungarian institution and vice versa.

Sport:

The department of Physical Education is
responsible for the sports life of the University.
Students can choose from several sports offered by
the Department, like tennis, swimming or fitness,
but students also have access to the university
grounds, where they can play football or
basketball. The Department organizes seasonal ski
tours to the surrounding countries. The River Tisza
running through the city provides opportunities for
water sports. For those who wish to widen their sports
activities, we can offer opportunities to join various
sports clubs. During their studies, students have to
complete two Physical Education courses.

Confucius Institute:

The Confucius Institute at the University of Szeged was officially opened in the autumn of 2012. For those
interested in learning Chinese as a foreign language the Institute offers language classes taught by professional Chinese
language teachers. Besides language teaching, the Institute emphasizes the importance of conveying Chinese culture
to a wide audience: the Institute organizes a great variety of exciting programmes free to attend for the public.
