A Leader in the Scrap Metal Industry

Founded in 1964 by Sam Gershowitz, Gershow Recycling began as a two-man
operation with a tractor and trailer, a boom truck and the first portable car flattener.
Today, it is one of Long Island’s oldest and most successful environmental compa-
nies whose mission is: Conserving the Future by Recycling the Past. Gershow
recognized early on that Long Island had a growing solid waste problem and they
could do something about it. As a result, they went to the region’s landfills to literally
mine thousands of tons of cars that had been entombed there because they felt they
could be recycled.
Today, Gershow Recycling operates the most modern, technically advanced metal
processing and recycling facilities in the United States. Their modern equipment and
their ability to meet new recycling industry needs reflects the commitment they have
made toward providing the finest service possible to their customers.
In recent years, the company has been featured several times on Fox News, Fox
Business News and the Science Channel. In 2010, Gershow was regularly shown on
Spike Television’s program “Scrappers.” In 2011, the company was the subject of an
hour-long National Geographic program called “Break it Down.”

BREAK IT DOWN

Buyers of Scrap Metal

Gershow Recycling is a processor of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, as well as
paper products. The company operates eight facilities throughout Long Island and
Brooklyn with a group of highly trained and skilled associates. Gershow purchases
scrap metal and paper products from the public, including homeowners and busi-
nesses, and then manufactures them into high-quality scrap products for recycling.
The company then sells these commodities domestically and worldwide to mills and
manufacturers for use in new products. As the only true scrap metal processor in the
region it serves, if you are not working directly with Gershow, you are not getting the
most for your scrap metal.

Preserving Our Environment

Gershow is one of Long Island’s oldest and most successful environmental compa-
nies whose mission is: Conserving the Future by Recycling the Past. From its early
days of mining the region’s landfills of thousands of tons of cars, it has continued to
work to minimize the amount of solid waste entering the region’s landfills.

Each year, Gershow recycles enough cars to stretch end to end from Medford, New
York to North Carolina, or you can fill all eight lanes of the Long Island Expressway
from the Midtown Tunnel to Riverhead, New York.

The company continues to invest in the most technologically advanced recycling
equipment that will allow it to recycle the most amount of metal possible. It belongs
to a vital national industry that helps to preserve the environment through energy
reduction and decreased emissions necessary to manufacture products. For
instance, in 2010 alone, the industry processed 74 million metric tons of steel.

community

outreach programs

As part of its community outreach
programs, the company regular-
ly appears in schools to lecture
on the importance of recycling
and to provide educational tools
about the environment. It has also
initiated a successful Can Tabs
for Kids program that not only
teaches area schoolchildren the
importance of recycling, but also
helps to raise funds in the fight
against childhood cancer.

Proudly Supporting our Local Communities

Gershow believes how they act reflects directly on their customers, and therefore
it plays an active role in the community. The company helps fund grassroots
environmental programs that promote recycling and environmental conserva-
tion and also supports several community and youth programs. The company
provides a scholarship award to several graduating students each year who are
pursuing engineering or environmental studies. It makes regular donations of
vehicles and provides the use of its facilities to local fire and ambulance companies for
training exercises.

Some of the organizations Gershow has supported:

• American Cancer Society • Patchogue Lions Club Christmas in June
• Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck • Play for Peace Soccer Tournament
