What are the benefits of
completing this
Project?
First of all, you will get a
chance to apply Design
Thinking to solve a
real-life problem.
Secondly, you will also contribute
towards the United Nations
Sustainable Development Goals
(SDGs). Watch this video to learn
more about the SDGs.

What do you notice about
the weather lately? Is it
warm? Have there been
flash floods where you live?
Climate change is caused
by increasing carbon
footprint - we are simply
producing too much
carbon dioxide!
This is the focus of our
Project. By completing this
Project, you are taking
action to help meet the UN
Sustainable Development
Goal 13: Climate Action.
Apart from SDG 13, you
will also choose one of the
three SDGs below to focus
on, in this project. Let’s
read more about these
SDGs.

Let us first learn about SDG 7, 11
and 12 by reading about them
here. Use the reflection
questions below to help you
understand what you read.
After reading, choose either
SDG 7, SDG 11 or SDG 12 to help
you complete this project.
1. Apakah yang telah anda pelajari daripada artikel ini?
2. Apakah yang mengejutkan anda tentang artikel ini?
3. Apakah perasaan anda setelah membaca artikel ini?
Contoh jawapan: Sedih, marah, kecewa, malu
4. Apakah soalan tambahan yang ingin anda tanya?
Contoh jawapan: Apakah yang boleh dilakukan untuk
memastikan pembebasan gas rumah hijau dapat
dikurangkan?
5. Apakah keperluan yang boleh anda kenal pasti setelah
membaca artikel tadi?
Contoh jawapan: Masyarakat perlu mengubah cara
pembelian mereka agar lebih mesra alam.

carbon footprint by encouraging
lifestyle changes in your
surrounding community.
What comes to your mind when
you think of “carbon footprint”?
Now take a moment to think.
Write your answer in your

Stage 1 in Design
Thinking is ‘Empathise’. In
this stage, we want to
understand our end users
and their needs.
‘End users’ are people
who will benefit from our
design. These are people
who will use the products
or services that we create.
In this investigation, your
end users are people in
your community

Short Interview
(60 mins)
Instructions:
You will now interview 2 members of your community
to find out how they feel about their carbon footprint
Before you interview, please read the Interview Guide.
Some questions have been prepared for you, but you
should add another TWO questions.
● Do you think that carbon footprint is a big
problem?
● On a scale of 1-5, 1 being low and 5 meaning high,
how high do you think your carbon footprint is?
Why did you choose this number?
● What are your daily activities that has
contributed to your carbon footprint?
● What have you done to reduce your carbon
footprint? Any obstacles or challenges when
trying?
● (OWN QUESTION) ……………………………………………U…p…lo…a…d…m….e
● (OWN QUESTION) ……………………………………………t…o…G…E…M…S...
Remember to get your end users to elaborate on their
answers. Be curious! Ask, “Can you tell me more about
that?” You have 7 days to complete the interviews.
Write your answers in your Design Thinking notebook
and fill in the Empathy Map.
Before you interview,
do read the Interview
Guide.

Stage 4 in Design
Thinking is ‘Prototype’.
In this stage, we will
build a prototype of our
idea. A prototype is a
basic model of our idea.
It is like the ‘real thing’
but is made of low cost
materials. We build a
prototype so we can get
feedback on our idea,
before building the real
thing.
Ready to start
prototyping? Let’s go!

Prototyping Ok, so we are ready to build
(60mins) our prototype. You can choose
to build anything to show your
idea. If your solution is a
solar-powered car for example,
you can build a prototype of
the car!
If your solution is a
system of storing food
so that they last longer,
you can choose to draw
how that system would
look like. Here we have
some pictures of
prototypes to inspire
you.

Prototyping
(60mins)
Remember, a prototype does
not have to be perfect so just
keep building! We want to
build as many prototypes as
possible. Be creative - look
around you and ask yourself,
“What can I use to build this
idea?” Stop when you feel like
you have made enough
prototypes for your end users.
Here are some ideas that Aster

Stage 5 in Design
Thinking is ‘Test’. In this
stage, we will show our
prototypes to our end
users. Our end users will
look at, touch and feel
the prototypes. They
will then give us
‘feedback’ - what they
like and what can be
improved.
Let’s get started!

I can’t believe we are almost done
with our Project, Aster.
Yes Gayathri! The final thing
to do now is to test our ideas
and show our prototype to
the community and get their
feedback.
How should I
prepare?
Find different ways to
present your prototype. It
can be a simple
presentation or it you can
think of creative ways like
using social media to get
the community to give
feedback on your
prototype.

Testing Plan (15 mins)
Instructions:
In order to get good and meaningful feedback on
your prototype, you will need to think of an action
plan on how to get individuals in your community
to hear and see your ideas as well as comment on
it.
In your action plan, make sure to include :
- Method of testing
- Tools you will be using
- Time
- Location
- Target audience (at least 4 individuals)
Briefly write your plan in your Design Thinking
notebook. Take a photo when you are done, and
upload to GEMS.
**TIPS**
Your presentation should be
as engaging as possible!
Smile and show your
excitement for your ideas and
let your audience get excited
about your ideas too.

If you are up for the challenge, share your
presentation with a larger group of people
that you can get feedback from.
E.g.:
- Publish a blog that other youth can read.
- Create a Facebook page to showcase your
project.
- Share your experience on social media
(Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, Snapchat,
Clubhouse)
- Post a video of your presentation on
Youtube
