Spring Phase is always a busy and enjoyable time at
St. Benedict’s Prep, and students in this year’s Digital
Photography class learned much during the course. We
present here the final exhibit photos that were assembled
by the Spring 2018 class.

“Framing the Light” has always been the title of the
photo exhibit after the course is completed. The phrase
describes, in a certain sense, what photography is like: it is
placing a boundary, or a “frame” around the light that is
seen in the image. Without light, there is no visible image.
In the same sense, there is no photograph if there was no
boundary placed by the photographer in composing the
image.

Various composition and photography techniques
are embodied in these exhibit photographs. During our
field trips, we traveled to different locations around New
York City, and we walked around the school and around
Newark, too. These photographs represent the learning
that occurred during the five weeks of the course, as we
sought to explore the possibilities of photography.

Students used their own cameras: some had dSLR’s
while others had compact cameras or bridge cameras.
There was much freedom in the choice of subject while
each assignment centered on particular photography
techniques or compositional elements. We hope our
viewers can appreciate the personalities of each of us,
the photographers, in the choice of photos we have each
decided to display as our final project.
