SRI MAHAMARIAMAN TEMPLE
ADDRESS:
LEBUH QUEEN,
GEORGETOWN,
PENANG
Penang’s diverse religious beliefs mean that there is a varied
assortment of houses of worship scattered across the island.
This tour is a must-do as it introduces you to the Sri
Mahamariaman Temple – built in 1833, its one of the oldest
temples on the island and rising above the entrance is the
impressive 23.5 feet tall sculptured Gopuram (tower). Features
Hindu deities, soldiers and floral decorations.
The temple is named after the
Goddess of disease, rain and
protection. It was my first time
entering a temple, I am not sure what
to feel because I was scared I would
violate their rules and customs. But, I
carried on anyway and the first thing
that I felt was, I felt overwhelmed. It
was beautiful and simply amazing. It
was exactly like what I saw on
television everyday. The people
around there are friendly as well.
The interior of the temple is also filled
with fascinating statues of Hindu deities
including the Lord Subramiam, Durga
and Ganapathy. During festive seasons,
for example Deepavali and Thaipusam,
the temples will be packed with
thousands of devotees making offerings.
But worry not because other than festive
seasons, the temple is open daily from
6.30am to 12 noon and from 4.30pm to
9pm, When you are going to visit the
temple, remember to take off your shoes
before you step it.
Watch me to have a sneakpeak of
the places we went to!

architecture with Indian influence.
As the population of Indian Muslim
settlers grew,a larger and more
permanent mosque was
necessary. Cauder
Mohuddeen,their headman (King
Kapitan) at that time, applied for a
land grant for the new mosque.
Eighteen acres was obtained in
November 1801 and construction
began immediately.
