the prime responsibility lies on the academic
institution to bridge this gap by nurturing

requisite knowledge, skills and help them
convert into a repository of human resources.
Undoubtedly, globalization has raised the
rungs of competition and the unprecedented

THE GUIDEPOST EXPLORING NEW HORIZONS WITH LEADERSHIP
AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

MIRANDA HOUSE | 08

Life is about discovering who we are, leading is about striving to become better
than we are, and helping everything and everyone around us to become better
too. In the words of Woodrow Wilson, “You are not here merely to make a living.
You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision,
with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world,
and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand.”

The Placement Cell successfully conducted a panel discussion on
“EXPLORING NEW HORIZONS WITH LEADERSHIP AND PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT” with esteemed panellists from diverse fields of life. The
discussion encompassed things ranging from stimulating academic
deliberations to discussions on the dynamic nature of careers prospects and
most importantly, stimulating the process of self-discovery in the professional
realm. The event witnessed the active participation of students. Additionally, it
brought forth new ideas and enriching discourses on leadership and
professional development in modern times. The esteemed panellists for this
insightful session were
Ms Bhaswati Mukherjee (Former Ambassador of India to Netherlands), Ms
Renu Sud Karnad (MD of HDFC Ltd.), Mr Sameer Chadha (CEO of KPMG
Global Services) “LEADERSHIP IS THE CAPACITY TO TRANSLATE VISION
INTO REALITY” and all our panelists have proved this true by making
significant contributions in their respective fields and emerging as leaders with
exceptional perspectives and expertise. Former Indian diplomat and the
Ambassador of India to the Netherlands, Ms Mukherjee described the role
played by Miranda House in shaping her personality. Her valuable insider's view
familiarized the aspiring civil servants with the nature of work and ethics. Ms
Karnad currently serving as the managing director of HDFC and also an alumna
of Miranda House enlightened us with her awe-inspiring journey in the financial
sector which even today has a very less proportion of women employees. The
CEO of KPMG Global Services, Mr Chadda shared his inspiring professional
trek with a strong message of taking responsibility for our career choices.
Overall, the event proved to be extremely ingenious and worthwhile.

INKED AND SPILLED GIG ECONOMY

-Diya Nidamarthi, Miranda House

From picking you up at the airport to delivering food to your house to the article
you read in a newspaper to the codes written for websites; the Gig economy is
seeping into our lives and here is how it’s affecting careers. The global economy
is currently undergoing a massive change with the advent of Gig economy and
the ongoing pandemic adding to the growth. In simple terms a Gig Economy is a
type of economy dominated by part-time, temporary, freelance workers and
contractors as compared to the conventional full-time in-office employees.
There are about 200 million people who are considered part of the Gig
workforce all over the world. In India, the Gig economy as a concept is not
completely alien as it has existed in the informal sector. India presently has
about 3 million Gig workers which is minuscule in contrast to the total 500
million workers in the country. With the rise in ‘Work from home’ and flexibility of
work during the pandemic we are moving towards a gig economy which could
potentially serve upto 90 million jobs, transact over USD 250 billion in volume of
work and add around 1.25% to India’s GDP. Some Indian companies have
already based themselves on the gig economy model such as Ola, Uber,
Swiggy, Dunzo and UrbanCompany among others.

The most prominent feature of a gig economy would be the flexibility and
dynamic structure which are adaptable to the needs of the hour and to match up
to the lifestyle we are adopting. We are observing instances of work from home,
co-working spaces, freelance work, multiple career changes which are a
reflection of the transformation towards a gig economy on the large scale. There
is a rise in unconventional work spaces like studios for hire and cafes along with
the web being the largest facilitator of work. Need for an office and other
paraphernalia no longer exists but new trends of mobile, on-the-move options
are in demand.

THE GUIDEPOST MIRANDA HOUSE | 14

The four largest industry sectors which will be leading India into the
gig economy would be construction, manufacturing, retail and
transportation & logistics. These industries could alone create 70
million of the potential gig jobs. There is already some progress in
different sectors like the new method adopted by colleges and
universities of hiring adjunct or part-time professors instead of giving
tenure to them which allows them to cut costs while matching
professors to their academic needs. Reports also suggest that
knowledge-intensive industries and creative occupations are the
largest and fastest growing segments when it comes to freelance.
We may have observed that in part-time writers, bloggers and
journalist to independent consultants, coders etc. catering to a
multitude of needs. These also comes up the inevitable dependence
on technology, gig economy will be tied to digital platforms,
payments and largely online work. There has already been an
increase in digital payments and with a surge in digital use, demand
for the back-end designing and programme has already been
created.

In the future, workers or employees will have flexible schedules and workloads and the ability to pick and
choose the work they wish to carry out and even work multiple jobs across different sectors too. Clients and
employers also have lots of options when choosing employees especially companies which will not be
required to provide any benefits such as health insurance, provident fund, pensions etc. Gig work also
spans across the sectors of any economy from high-end independent service providers like consultants,
marketing and the likes which are skill-based; to the lower end of the workforce, namely those not based on
skill but purely monetary needs like driving for Uber, delivering for Swiggy etc.

In terms of building a career in the gig economy it will require one to be dynamic, aware, and multifaceted. It
is no longer a dream to get that one job with all the perks and be set for life. The future needs one to be
quick on their feet and have an identity of their own and a portfolio especially one maintained online. To be
an independent worker or gig worker there are strategies to make up for the fast pace. One would need to
develop a solid network and follow the method of ‘Places, Routines, Purpose and People’. Following this
method, gives a worker the structure that is relatively shrunk after the transformation into a gig Economy.
These four can be considered the cornerstones for establishing and maintaining yourself. Further success in
the gig economy comes from establishing a fine balance between ‘Viability and Vitality’. Viability here refers
to the business, it’s relevance and feasibility and Vitality here focuses on the dedication and interest one
has in their work. The gig economy would be all about everyone doing what they are best at and in this
scenario, Viability and Vitality are complementary to being successful. As for success in the gig economy
depends on grit and ability to get over any plateau and carry on. There is always a choice rather than a
compulsion and the options are unlimited making a person responsible for themselves and their work
instead of a corporation and binding contracts; this results in success being redefined.

The frequently used term “The New Normal” may be well understood with this rise of Gig Economy which is
a great opportunity to evolve into a free and liberating economy which channelises the people’s skills and
interests for the development of the nation and can be well summarised by Peggy Choi, the founder and
CEO of Lynk(also a company which employs Gig workers) who said; “In the not-so-distant future, we will be
able to share and monetise knowledge via live conversations or text messages in bite-size chunks.”

7 BEST SOFT SKILLS

To put on your resume before applying for a
job/internship.

-Jahnvi Bansal, Miranda House

Catching the eye of a typical recruiter can be a tough job when the competition is fierce. Which skills on
your resume do you think make you stand out from the competition? Is it the soft skills or the hard
skills? Well, it is the perfect blend of both. While hard skills are mostly industry specific and can be
taught, soft skills are the ones that can put you on the top of the list. Most hiring managers and talent
acquisition professionals agree that they prefer candidates with highly developed soft skills.
However, if you are still confused about what constitutes hard and soft skills, here are ways to
distinguish between them. Hard skills typically constitute what we call technical and quantifiable skills
that you have learned or had an experience in doing the same. The most basic examples include being
bilingual/multilingual, programming, etc. Soft skills are more subjective in nature and represent
themselves in the way you get along with people in the workplace or can be best described as specific
behavioural traits you possess. The examples include problem-solving skills, work ethic etc. The best
way to demonstrate this is by citing examples of you showcasing your soft skills.
Let’s have a look at which soft skills improve your chance of being shortlisted for your dream
job/internship in a sea of bland candidates.

THE DICHOTOMY OF BUYING THE PERFECT PRESENT AND

THE EFFICACIOUS RUSE OF UNDERGRADUATE DEGREES

market these days?
Or is a college degree our only golden ticket to the job
market?

THE GUIDEPOST MIRANDA HOUSE | 20

Now, lets assume a peculiar scenario

A" has successfully passed his semester exams and received his undergraduate
degree from a renowned university.
But "B" who studies in the same university, two days before his final semester paper,
unfortunately, contracts Covid-19. Unable to write his exam (and with no other way
around), he fails to graduate and obtain a degree.
Forthwith, A and B both enter the job market. While A secures an impressive job
offer, B does not.
What a shallow world we live in?
Despite having the same skills, knowledge, learning experience, and being a student
of the same well-renowned university, why does B have to face this setback? The
altruistic promoters of The Human Capital Theory might argue of this being unfair by
and large. And rightly so, after all, B's investment is almost identical to that of A's.
To understand this imbalance we need to dive deeper.

As Noam Chomsky, one of the founders of the field of cognitive science quotes:
"The general population doesn't know what's happening, and it doesn't even know
that it doesn't know."
This phenomenon that he talks about, where one party to an economic transaction
has more or better information than the other is known as INFORMATION
ASYMMETRY.
The functioning of the job market in such a manner, where despite having the same
required skills, B got rejected from every job, is particularly attributed to the Signalling
Theory.
In a market of asymmetric information, Signaling is defined as one party credibly
conveying information about itself to another party.
This Signaling Theory was first developed by Michael Spence in his 1973 seminal
paper "Job Market Signaling". In his model of job market signaling, Spence argues
that the applicants or the potential employees send out signals about their abilities to
the recruiters through acquiring particularly challenging educational qualifications or
credentials. This signaling arises from the belief of the employers that an individual's
productivity is positively correlated with his credentials (the more credentials she has,
the more productive she is supposed to be). Spence talks about hiring in the job
market being an investment decision under uncertainty where the employer plays a
gamble.

The employer's decision is considered to be a gamble because the employer cannot
know the capabilities and the Marginal Product of an employee immediately after the
job offer. Hence, to ascertain his assessment of this gamble, the employer sets out
barriers to entry and a basic set of observable characteristics, upon which he can
make informed decisions. This bias helps the employer to differentiate between
employees with higher productivity and lower productivity merely based on their
qualifications. The advocates of the signaling theory reason that an individual who
has been admitted to an esteemed college and has completed the degree exhibits
dedication, leadership skills, and competency. All the while, believing that another
individual who doesn't have a graduate degree does not possess the kind of skills
the job requires.

THE GUIDEPOST MIRANDA HOUSE | 20

In our case, what A and B are trying to do with their undergraduate degrees is: they are
conveying their potential skill set to the recruiter. In essence, they are Signalling to their
employers where the undergraduate degrees act as a positive Signal. While as for B, failing
to obtain a degree sends out a negative signal to the employer, and not having an
undergraduate degree, rules out any possibility of him having a formal job.
The signaling theory believes that college education adds nothing to the productivity of a
college graduate only to be topped up with a high cost. This, in turn, places a wedge
between people of different productivity leading to the employers and individuals believing in
these credentials as mere rosy- screens or filters. Due to this theory prevailing in a majority
of markets and quasi-markets, the wage gap between graduates and non-graduates has
been increasing over the years.
(Note: exceptions are always present, in this case, degrees that require fieldwork do add to
the productivity of a student)

This Signaling Theory was first developed by Michael Spence in his 1973 seminal paper
"Job Market Signaling". In his model of job market signaling, Spence argues that the
applicants or the potential employees send out signals about their abilities to the recruiters
through acquiring particularly challenging educational qualifications or credentials. This
signaling arises from the belief of the employers that an individual's productivity is positively
correlated with his credentials (the more credentials she has, the more productive she is
supposed to be). Spence talks about hiring in the job market being an investment decision
under uncertainty where the employer plays a gamble. The employer's decision is

THE GUIDEPOST MIRANDA HOUSE | 21

According to ILO's India Wage Report: "For urban regular workers – both male and
female – the advantage of being more educated has also meant higher wage
growth in the period 1993–94 to 2011–12. The wages for urban male and female
regular workers with the highest levels of education increased by 73 percent and 69
percent, respectively, from 1993–94 to 2011–12".
As we can notice, there is a stark difference in the wages for those with a higher
degree and those with secondary education. This only proves that the face value of
a degree has been increasing over the years while the value of fieldwork and
experience has been in the decline.
This phrase sums it all up:
In short, whoever you may be,
To this conclusion you’ll agree,
When every one is somebodee,
Then no one’s anybody!
—W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, The Gondoliers

Signaling, in not so economic contexts:

Let us steer away from the classic economic arguments for a little while and talk
about things that do not come under the Orthodox economic territory. Often when
you dig deep enough, economics sprouts out even in the most unexpected
circumstances and fields.

One question that I often ask myself is: how do STEM Majors usually land high-
paying finance jobs?

The Signalling theory might sound like a reasonable explanation to this question of
ours. A STEM degree is as difficult as it can get, so in essence, this hard to obtain
degree signals to the employer the competency and perseverance of the individual.
Moreover, the recruiters feel that finance skills can be learned through entry-level
jobs and on-the-job training. And this is the reason why entry-level jobs are
designed specifically for recent graduates which do not require them to have any
prior experience. The primary cause for this could be the popular belief of the
employers in the job market, that university education does not add anything to
individual productivity and acts as a prerequisite for entry to the job market (their
golden ticket). Furthermore, these entry-level jobs provide on-site training after
recruitment, proving that the degrees are mere credentials or filters of hard work
and not the knowledge banks pre-required for jobs. To understand why
undergraduate degrees are devalued so much, we need to understand what
credentialism or qualification inflation is.

THE GUIDEPOST MIRANDA HOUSE | 22

Qualification Inflation and Signalling:

I have had my parents often telling me, how back in the 80s, having a bachelor’s
degree was a substantial feat. And a person with a postgraduate degree was
society’s big shot. But these days do we not feel obligated to have an undergraduate
degree?
Why is a drop year seen as a negative incentive in the job market?
Why is it that students pursuing a certification course opt for an undergraduate
course on the sidelines, knowing that the undergrad course will not be of use to
them? Is the degree just a plan B?
It might be that the opportunity cost of not getting a degree is very high. Is it just me
or does everyone feel that the idea of having a mere credential has ingrained itself in
the social norms?
The idea of owning a credential or a degree has furthered the social divide all the
while emboldening the unequal distribution of wealth, stratifying and distinguishing
people with different means and incomes.

But the most important question we need to ask is why has the 16-year
education term (high school+graduation) become an accepted standard of any
cultured society?
This is a serious structural problem in our society that could use some
decluttering.

The fundamental cause behind this shift can be accredited to the Qualification
Inflation over the past 10 decades, with the first mention of it being in a 1973
book by Prof. Randall Collin: The Credential Society.
Credentialism or Qualification Inflation is a combination of processes involving
an increased demand for formal educational qualifications and devaluation of
the same. The shift to a knowledge economy from an agricultural and an
industrial economy is known to be a root cause for this inflation. There has been
a shift from demand for physical labor to an increased demand for intellect. We
often like to portray ourselves as intelligent and it is natural to do so because
everybody wants to stand out from the crowd. We feel a sense of fulfillment
when we accomplish something that is not easy to come by (for example:
getting into your dream school/ university). And with everybody wanting to
signal their intellect to the recruiters, the number of degree-holders over the
past few decades has significantly increased.
The IECF Monitor predicts: “the number of 25-34 year-olds with a university
degree is forecast to grow from 137 million as of 2013 to 300 million by 2030”.
This number is exclusively significant in developing countries, where the shift to
the knowledge economy has just come about. This number is only going to
grow, leading to the origin of unique and sector-specific requirements in the job
market, where a degree will probably lose its value over time. And in India, the
transition has only come about and we have a long way to go.

THE GUIDEPOST MIRANDA HOUSE | 23

Now without further ado,
Acknowledging the very first dilemma that we talked about: the conflicting conundrum of
choosing between a gift card and a material present.
I had two practical arguments, to rationalize the preference for both gifts.

● The argument for a gift card:
Think of it as giving cash to a person. The person on the receiving end can exchange it for
anything they like anywhere they want. A decent argument…

● The argument for a material present:
The rationale behind buying a material present is somewhat funny but credible to its core and
rather natural. Practically, when you give someone a present that is of particular interest to
them, the present acts as a Signal. The person who has bought the present signals to the
receiver that she has put in endless hours to find the perfect present, further conveying that the
person deeply cares about and adores the receiver. Likewise, this action displays the strength
of affection.

This stunning economic concept is all around us. Take for instance a lover buying gifts during
courtship or when individuals buy an expensive and valuable engagement ring signaling to their
partner the dedication and affection towards each other. One can also notice the signaling game in
markets for cars. The crucial decision
of buying a car: to buy a Jaguar or a Hyundai. Both cars serve the purpose and provide the same
utility to the user, the only difference here being that a Jaguar signals luxury and prosperity while a
Hyundai does not. So does an iPhone, (in India) which signals affluence while a Nokia phone does
not.
The bizarre similarity between all these phenomena?
Signals. They are all around us.
And thus ends our gimmick of elegantly rationalizing the weirdness and madness around us. These
Signals now appear to be everywhere, don't they? That is the charm of Economic Imperialism. Good
old economics behind every single thing.
Now as you go out into the world, make sure not to miss out on any signals out there. Because the
world is but a peculiar place and you never know when you stumble across a signal.

Thank you

Even their interest, engagement and participation in online classes will increase. Try to give
them as less homework to copy as possible because as a result much part of their day will
get wasted in copying things from the notes, instead ask them to just take a print or save a
soft copy of the notes on their devices and give them homework that will increase their
creativity, thinking and imagination. Whenever you find any student who is missing classes
for past few days, personally contact them to enquire if they are suffering from some
trouble and in case of some genuine issue try to resolve it with the help of the school
authorities. Also try to provide intrinsic motivation to students.
Extrinsic motivators like certificates and digital badges or recognition show others what you
know and what you can do, but intrinsic motivators drive a person forward. Intrinsic
motivation compels a student to keep doing difficult tasks, like juggling an online course
with other responsibilities. You want students to have a sense of purpose that fuels their
course participation and engagement. They should know that what they’re doing here
matters. Remind students how their new knowledge and skills will help them make a
difference in the world, even in small ways. Talk about how this new expertise helps them
improve or contribute to their company, industry or profession, or how it impacts their
customers or clients. Create and share talking points with instructors, teaching assistants,
and success coaches that reinforce the purpose behind the course, the true meaning
behind the certificate of completion or digital badge. The efforts your association makes to
improve the learning experience shows students that you care about their growth and
success. When students become more engaged in the learning experience, they’ll get
more out of the course, and they’re more likely to come back to you for additional
education. So if these few changes can be made then the engagement and interest of
students will drastically improve and online classes in its true form will impart education to
the future of the country ‘our students’.

ROLE OF INTERNSHIP IN CAREER DEVELOPMENT

An internship is something every student has heard

one’s knowledge of workspace collaboration, Chris Myers, an entrepreneur wrote in an article

can not be taught through books like commitment,

self-motivation, and integrity.

Internships are a demonstrated method to acquire

pertinent information, abilities, and experience while

setting up significant associations in the field. They

are likewise an approach to consider going all in

and see whether a particular field is something you

could see yourself doing full-time.

The investment in an internship or center program is regardless extremely applicable to one’s future -
and there are three particular gatherings who are keen on it.
The first is the individual or association that utilizes you for that internship. Most ability-driven, great
associations utilize a temporary job program as an essential ability pipeline - a method of recognizing
and screening planned contenders for passage-level proficient positions. In the event that they've seen
how you can two or three months or more, they can be sensibly sure of what they'll see from you
throughout a more lasting responsibility.
The second invested individual is some other business to whom you may apply following your
internship. The way that you have finished a temporary position sends a planned future boss a few
significant signs:

1. It is evidence of a seriousness 3. In the event you got an offer 4. If the prospective employer

kind of work?)

THE GUIDEPOST MIRANDA HOUSE | 27

The third interested party, and perhaps the most important, is… you. An internship is not only an
opportunity for a potential employer to evaluate you. It’s also a crucial opportunity for you to evaluate
them. Not just the organization, its people, and its culture, but the industry itself. You are potentially
getting ready to sign on (as a full-time hire) for 40-hour work weeks (and potentially much, much
more) in this industry and this firm. Do you like the work? Wouldn’t you like to de-risk that decision
for yourself by trying it out on a no-commitment basis first?
As the pandemic hit the world in the year 2019, virtually every action was distributed because of it
which included temporary jobs moreover. The economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic has
been widespread. For young people, including students gearing up for summer internships and
soon-to-be college graduates, professional prospects have been disproportionately affected. As
Edwin Koc, director of research, public policy, and legislative affairs for the National Association of
Colleges and Employers puts it, "Internships are often a sort of a probationary period for students
that might get full-time jobs and employers predominantly use internship programs as part of their
full-time recruiting process."
With COVID-19, we saw a significant impact on internship opportunities as companies had to quickly
make decisions based on the daily changes occurring across the globe. In some cases, internship
programs were totally dropped during the current year. Different associations expected to make
creative answers to deal with the startling and hold their internship program, as many perceived this
isn't simply imperative to their associations however to those students to whom they had made the
responsibility. By and large, the choice was to "go virtual." Key contemplations as associations
oversee through a virtual program, include:

1. Giving reliable worldwide internship insights while protecting the assistants
2. Working in virtual groups
3. Training and tutoring the students
4. Providing networking opportunities among the interns
5. Evaluation of the intern for future opportunities

The IT sector has had a distinct advantage during the lockdown time frame with corporates showing
a colossal hunger for digitization. Plainly, the IT area has been the most un-affected area with
regards to recruiting this year. The long-term impact on evaluating future talent pools is still to be
determined as each organization manages through the unknown waters of a virtual internship
program.

However concluding, we can say that internships are not merely job experiences by also improve
students’ employability, academic outcomes, and career crystallization

HOW 2020 CHANGED THE JOB MARKET SCENARIO

-Sanskrati Verma, Miranda House

The year 2020 started off with joys, delights and huge expectations from the year, as one wished
its experience to be as fancy as the number is. We hoped it will be an unforgettable year and it
indeed was but for all the wrong reasons, as the year was filled with Fear for life, loss of loved
ones, loss of jobs, financial instability, toll on mental health and Isolation. Not even for a minute
one could think of anything beyond corona virus and its impact on our lives. The damage caused
by the deadly corona virus has taken everyone's life for a toss and has affected several businesses
beyond repair.
The Covid-19 outbreak in India and the subsequent nationwide lockdown from March 25 altered
the landscape of the country’s employment sector, with a global Pandemic affecting the whole
world, businesses around the world were forced into work-from-home environments. With close to
10.9 million jobs being lost across sectors, 2020 was termed the worst-ever year for the job market
in India. There is no centralized data available on the absolute number of jobs lost or employment
created in India. However HR consultants estimate that around 1 million jobs were created in 2020,
with the July-December period seeing the highest recruitment. While the intensity of the impact
differs from sector to sector, there are few sectors that have been hit the most and might continue
to suffer until life turns back to normal.

Worst Hit Economic Sectors:
Among the various sectors, aviation, hospitality and travel were the worst hit due to the lockdown.
Indians were forced to stay home and these sectors either sent their employees on 'leave without
pay' or laid them off.

1. Aviation Sector
Corona virus outbreak has caused excessive damage to aviation sector, threatening the survival
and sustainability of airlines around the globe as most of the countries cancelled domestic and
international flights on account of lockdown. The impact on the Aviation Sector is likely to be
severe and prolonged.
2. Tourism
The tourism sector experienced a crippling effect with the nationwide lockdown coinciding with the
peak tourism season.Among the 10.9 million jobs that were lost, 5 million were in the travel and
tourism sector alone. The worst hit job role was of travel agents and tour guides. It is estimated
that 20 million people work in the travel and tourism industry. The job roles involve sales,
marketing, planning itineraries, customer service and on-ground tour guide services.
3. Hospitality
Apart from travel, the restaurant and hotel industry was also badly hit. Covid-19 fears and
migration of workers led to eateries shutting down. Hotels were also forced to retrench staff in the
wake of almost 'zero bookings' in April and May 2020.
Close to 3.5 million jobs are estimated to have been lost in these two segments. Hotels reported a
45.3 percent decline in their revenue-per-available room in the January to June period from a year
ago. The Indian hospitality industry’s market size is estimated to be $10 billion and it is said to
employ 35 million people.

THE GUIDEPOST MIRANDA HOUSE | 29

4. Automobile/ Transport
An allied industry is the automobile/transport sector, which saw several drivers of private transport
being laid off due to schools being shut and corporate employees working from home. Close to 1
million such drivers/cleaners were out of jobs due to the extended shift to working from home. In
fact, 150,000 school bus staff lost their jobs and hasn't yet received any financial relief.

5. Retail Business
Offline retail suffered a blow due to malls being shut. This led to about 200,000 retail employees
across departmental stores and high-street fashion brands losing their jobs between March and
June 2020.

Sectors that bloomed:
On the one hand, several thousand jobs were lost but newer roles started to emerge/grow due to
the 'new-normal' lifestyle of remote working. The healthcare however, grew due to Covid-19 and
education (e-learning) sectors saw a positive impact from the lockdown with close to 0.4 million
new jobs being created in these segments according to industry estimates. Among the sectors
that bloomed, the biggest gainer was the healthcare sector.

1. IT-Related Roles
Digital interactions became more frequent, as a result of which roles in areas such as cyber-
security and data privacy, apart from IT backend support, were in demand. With concerns of
network security and data protection ruling the corporate world, demand for cyber security roles
and similar fields has subsequently increased during this pandemic.

2. Ed-Tech
Since schools and colleges were shut and online classes were being held, ed-tech companies
gained the most during 2020. Industry sources said that close to 130,000 jobs were created in the
education sector, led by online companies. Here, companies such as Up Grad and Byju's saw a
big spike in the number of employees amidst the online boom.

3. Healthcare
Close to 270,000 jobs were created in the healthcare sector. Nurses were the most in demand
followed by in-house doctors for corporate, ENT specialists, pharmacists and medical directors. At
pharmacy companies, microbiologists and infectious disease experts were the most in demand,
medical and healthcare saw an immediate sequential recovery of 90 percent in hiring in May
2020. Medical/healthcare companies in search of professionals on Naukri.com included Fortis,
Apollo Hospitals, Religare, Bayer Group, Mankind Pharma and Wockhardt Hospitals, among
others.

4. Real Estate
2020 has been a 'lake luster real year' for estate due to the aftereffects of the COVID-19
pandemic. Driven by low-interest rates, lucrative payment plans, attractive prices, residential sales
across the country increased by 34 percent in the September, amid the raging virus. With the
increasing trend of nuclear families, the demand for housing is expected to increase manifolds in
the coming years.

ACE THE MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED
INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

(+Sample Answers) -Vanshika, Miranda House

Do you know how to drive? If not, then just sit back and let’s go for one. The interview is no less than
driving. Either you drive or the interviewer does. Ultimately, it determines the destination of your journey.
Sometimes you may not know the roads or even the destination, but one thing that you have to know is
'YOU'. So, let’s get back to the basics and have a look at some of the possible routes :

Q.1 “Describe Yourself”
One of the most basic questions, but a crucial one. You can kick off your ride by answering this. Around
35 percent of your voyage depends on your answer to this one. You may either make it or break it. The
goal is to determine your capabilities, potential, and your attitude against the position you’ve applied to.
If you’ve entered a particular school, an institute, or a job, why did you? Why are you the way you are?
Why are you sitting opposite them?
Why? To answer this “why”, tailor and sell your experiences and knowledge to them, connecting the
dots of your resume.
Sample Answer:
I have worked as an Operation Manager, handling overseas clients and have worked at the front-line. I
love to interact with people and that is the reason I got myself enrolled in XYZ B-school to enhance my
skill set. Coming from a technical background, I bring strategic planning, logical thinking and real-time
problem solving attitude to the table. My career escalated in the sales department but in the course of
my career, I found myself more inclined towards Policy Making and Public Relations.

Q.2 Why this job?
This question lays down the foundation of another salient question, “where do you see yourself in the
next 5 years?” Don’t be generic while answering this. Invest your time researching the company’s profile,
agendas and presence. Crucially, make sure your answer reflects your homework. There’s a pool of
opportunities out there, but you picked this. Why? Yes, indicate the interest that brought you here in your
answer.
Sample Answer:
From the time I entered high school, I knew that writing was something I wanted my career in. Having
participated in national and international competitions, this belief became more firm. The articles
published by you are revolutionary & go pretty well with the journalism I do. Apart from that, working here
would be my dream job, since your mission aligns perfectly with my goals as a sustainability specialist
and as an absolute artist.

Q.3 “Why should we hire you”?
- Intimidating but a ramp to your walk towards your very own cubicle. Beware! Don’t sell yourself off. Craft
an answer that says why you would be a great fit in their car. Make sure you express your skillset and
work ethics.
Sample Answer :
I should be hired because my experiences as well as my visions align with your company. I pride myself
on my abilities to quickly resolve problems, adhere to deadlines and to bring the best content forward. I am
well versed in communicating with clients and influencing them.

THE GUIDEPOST MIRANDA HOUSE | 34

Q.4 “What are your biggest strengths and weaknesses”?
-Here’s a T-point. Choose how to go about this one. Know where to draw the line. Bragging is your
biggest foe. Remember, it is not the quantity that matters. A few relevant masteries backed by
evidence would be perfect. Prove your strengths instead of just listing them. Weakness, strength in
disguise or the project under construction, either way it is. Pen down your answer with honesty. A
company is more delighted to have employees who are aware of their flaws; responsible enough to
admit; ready to improve. Acquaint them of your Achilles heel and that you are working on them. Who
knows? They may join you, and isn't that exactly what you want?
Sample Answer :
I have always been very keen to know about technology and hence,my greatest strength is intellectual
curiosity. I enjoy surfing the latest in-demand tech-softwares and try to expertise them. And this comes
with a weakness itself. I would list my weakness as me being a workaholic. I’ve exposed myself to
many certain health issues pertaining to the same. Apart from that, I am also not very well versed with
python and I am currently working on that.

Q.5 “What are your future goals and expectations from us”?
-‘Expectations lead to resentment, “NOT Always”’. Expecting compensation for the time you’re going to
invest in something that’s quite customary, be it in terms of skill enhancement, qualities, experience or
monetary benefits. Mesh your objectives to what the company might offer you as a career path and make
your goals and expectations a long-term investment.
Sample Answer :
I would love to explore more with your company and want to lend a hand in your biggest “Slum” project.
My goals would be no less than making an implicit platform for all. A healthy work environment with a
deserving compensation is what I expect from your reputed company.

Wait! Wait! The end is no near.
"A long journey, miles to go. Something to keep, much to show.”
All in all, just remember one thing. Whichever vehicle you choose, whatever path you slip on, it’s always
nice to keep a map along. Be committed to your decisions and flexible in approach and someday we’ll
meet, for sure.
How did you like this short trip?

NEW BEGINNINGS, ENDLESS
POSSIBILITIES:

A GUIDE TO CHOOSING THE RIGHT UNIVERSITY

-Deepsha Mohanty, Miranda House

Choosing the right university is an arduous episode in a student’s life. Attending a university has a lasting
impact on one’s personal and professional life. Considering the gravity of this decision, students must ponder
upon where to get enrolled when looking over their options. There are certainly significant factors one should
consider before reaching a conclusion. Some of these are listed below.

Academic Quality and Faculty- Academic quality and the faculty of a university go hand in hand. A
good professor can instill valuable skills and train pupils for their careers. Along with well-qualified
professors, one also requires personal attention from them. Looking at the student-to-teacher ratio and
the average class size is helpful in this matter. Looking at the university and most specifically at the
department should be one’s priority. Particular attention should be paid to the university’s reputation for
research as it is one of the most important factors for master’s students.
Accreditation- One should make sure that the university is accredited. This ensures that an official
organization has reviewed the curriculum of the university and it meets the basic academic standards for
higher education. This information is readily available on the university website. Also, within a university,
specific colleges, departments and programs can have their own accreditation and this secures that one’s
degree will be recognized by other institutions.
Duration of the Program- The length of a program can vary greatly, depending on one’s qualifications
and the purpose of the study. Although the average is 1-2 years, there are courses that can run for 6
months, and even 5 years. This is something one needs to be aware of right from the beginning. An
aspect of fear and apprehension also exists as choosing a master’s program of less than a year runs the
risk of not being recognized.
Specialization- Deciding on a specialization for a master’s program is another important factor. If one
wants to pursue a master’s, in say, Psychology, which part of Psychology is one interested in? Is it
Clinical Psychology? Health Psychology? Business and Organizational Psychology? One’s choice of
specialization should be the one that they cherish in their field of study. Also, different universities might
be offering certain specific specializations, and therefore investigating the curriculum, assessment
strategies have a cardinal significance.
Financial Aid- Another salient aspect in the path of deciding a university is the tuition fee and living
expenses which would be incurred. Taking a glance at the provided breakup of the fees of an institution is
always beneficial. There are several grants from the state as well as from the university that can benefit
meritorious and underprivileged students, considering that no student shall be barred from accessing
education. Therefore, it is important to know about the process of receiving scholarships. Numerous
financial, as well as non-financial institutions, also lend a hand by providing loans to the students at low-
interest rates.
Expectations- It is very likely to anticipate certain provisions from a university of one's choice. These
expectations pertain to the placements, opportunities to hone skills, and participation in extra-curricular
activities. It would be advisable to know about the placement percentage of the university and its
initiatives for the students, as it would determine one’s chance to grab a position in a reputed
organisation. Also, one should introspect and understand why one wishes to take up a particular course
in the first place; ignoring a program only because it isn’t mainstream or taking up a course because of
the assumption that it might look good on the CV should be avoided. One needs to understand what
one’s requirements and capabilities are and then choose a university accordingly.

THE GUIDEPOST MIRANDA HOUSE | 37

Choosing the perfect university is a long term resolution that would leave its footprints behind. Many even
realize in their later years that they chose the wrong university or the wrong program. The right university can
provide new horizons and a whole new world. One needs to introspect, look within and learn about oneself
before choosing a university, as the saying goes, ‘Know thyself and you know thy university.’
