REFERENCE S
“Sally is a student who, for all the right reasons, consistently makes herself
memorable and invaluable to her academic and extra-curricular community. Having worked
with Sally on our school’s musical production, I was impressed by her from the onset of
rehearsals. She welcomed new challenges, handling a daunting schedule of dance, music and
blocking rehearsals with a consistently postive attitude and level of focus that inspired
others to approach the task with similar poise and enthusiasm. Most notably, she helped to
build morale for the group. Not content to simply reap rewards for herself--Sally ensured
that everyone shared in the feeling of success. She radiates warmth and a genuine interest
in others, and is an individual that truly embodies the qualities of community-mindedness,
leadership and inspiration.”

“I have taught Sally for two years of IB art. Sally’s initiative, creativity and work
ethic continue to astound me to this day. Sally is very self-assured and is always excited to
take her studies to the next level. She is motivated to create work that demonstrates a high
level of artistic skill as well as deep personal and socio-cultural meaning. She is always
researching and drawing in her sketchbook in a constant desire to create new and better
work. Sally is a talented draughtsman and works in a precise manner, resulting in very strong
work. She is always a leader, with her boundless positivity and high level of focus being
wonderful assets for her to use. She is one of the most independent, self-motivated and
disciplined students in her class. Her high level of enthusiasm and superior work ethic are
assets that will allow Sally to be such a positive addition anywhere she goes.

Release & Restrict is an experi- Public
ment exploring the varying levels of the Private
publicness or privateness of a space as
expressed by movement.
The location chosen is a site
within Cambridge that is surrounded by
movement (as circled in green on the left):
an open field that divides two major roads
running through the city. I was wondering if
there would be a way to channel all the
high energy movement going on in the site
and funnel it through my building in both
public and private spaces through restric-
tion and release of movement
My goal was to determine how a
space can feel more public if the movement
is permitted to be more freeflowing, or
more private if the movement feels more
confined. All of these suggestions for
method of movement in the space would be
done using various architectural elements.

Using a chosen site within
Chicago, Illinois, which in my case was Unity
Temple by Frank Lloyd Wright, I was to
create Nolli-inspired diagrams to map out
the space and highlight any details that I
believe to be important to question or
support the place's identity as a 'public'
space. The goal was to rethink any
preconceived notions I might have about
what makes a public space.
I decided to approach this project
using the religious aspect of Unity Temple,
exploring how Universal Unitarianism
creates an open space for people of all
religions, while simultaneously adding an
element of privacy to the space for being
a religious institution.

Within a chosen site in Cambridge,
Ontario, our group was to design a small,
self-contained residential space with
ancillary support spaces. The space was to
be organized so that it does not signifi-
cantly diminish the amenities of the
buildings and spaces around it, while
leaving a significant amount of the ground
plane for free and current uses.
The goal was to create an
architectural infrastructure, one that will
accommodate changes in the particular
studio without changing that matrix or
frame.
Through our 'dancing deck' design
inspired by Kandinsky's 'Composition VIII',
we wished to spark influence for a more
livable and green Cambridge.

The task was to design an piece
of architectural equipment to make a
space a home. Each distinct component was
to be designed for prefabrication and
installation in an appropriate situation in
less than eight hours. The focus was on
the anthropomorphic configuration,
material choice and fabrication.
The windows are the eyes of the
building, the space where communication
between the interior and exterior take
place. A window has the potential to
become more than a mere opening, be it a
bookshelf, a reading nook, or any private
storage space. Inspired by the beautifully
crafted Hanok doors of traditional Korean
buildings, this particular window is to be
the transition space between the interior
and private outdoor space of an apartment
building.

A portable classroom
located in Barcelona, Spain.
The design is influenced by
the culture and architecture
in Barcelona, as well as
pre-fabricated modular
homes. It can be used for a
variety of purposes, as it
includes a flexible open space
that can be transformed to
the occupants' desires.
The steel arches act
like a ribcage protecting the
inner shell, and the solar
panels are aligned in a
spine-like fashion in the form
of fishscales, drawing off
Gaudi's ever-present nature-
inspired design.

Looking to Walter Benjamin's
works pertaining the association of a
particular memory of a distant past with
some sort of mnemonic device, the goal of
the project was to create an experiential,
visual installation that would objectify a
self-identified link that exists between the
concepts of time and architecture.
The link that I hope to convey
through this installation is the importance
of the sense of sight when it comes to the
typical experiences of architecture as well
as time, simultaneously highlighting the
importance of the presence of light.
The installation is an experience
of progression through human history in
the form of symbolic drawings of ink,
demonstrating the importance of sight and
visual connections associated with our
perception of time.
