28Passage 3Half-TruthsBeware of those who use the truth to deceive. When someone tells you somethingthat is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can createa false impression. For example, someone might say, “I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery. It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars!” This guy’s a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he bought two hundred tickets, and only one was a winner. He’s really a big loser! He didn’t say anything that was false, but he deliberately omitted important information. That’s called a half-truth. Half-truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.Untrustworthy candidates in political campaigns often use this tactic. Let’s saythat during Governor Smith’s last term, the state lost one million jobs and gained threemillion jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents runs an ad saying,“During Governor Smith’s term, the state lost one million jobs!” That’s true. Howeveran honest statement would have been, “During Governor Smith’s term, the state had a net gain of two million jobs.” Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths. It’s against the law to make false claimsso they try to mislead you with the truth. An ad might boast, “Nine out of ten doctorsrecommend Yucky Pills to cure nose pimples.” It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Corporation. This kind of deception happens too often. It’s a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, andsometimes the truth can lie as well.

30Passage 4Lions are opportunists; they prefer to eat without having to do much work. Whenresting in the shade, they are also watching the sky, and if they see vultures swoopingdown, they are off and away. Even in the heat of the day they will suddenly rouse themselves and run a mile across the plains to find out what was going on. If another animal has made a kill , they will drive it off and take the kill for themselves. A grown lion can easily consume 60 pounds of meat at a single feeding. Often they eat until it seems painful for them to lie down. The lionesses, being leaner and swifter, are better hunters than the males, who looka bit like moving haystacks during the day. The males don’t mind; after the kill they movein and take the best share. Most kills are made at night or just before dawn. In four yearsat Etosha, we have witnessed many daylight attempts but only ten kills. We estimatethe day time ratio at around twenty attempts for one kill. The kill is the exclamation point in the day–to–day existence of the lions, since these great beasts spend most of their time, about 20 hours a day, sleeping and resting.Lion are social cats, and during these times of leisure, they love to rub against each other. After drinking at a water hole, a lioness rests her chin on another’s back. When walkingpast lazing members of their pride, young lions often touch faces with the adults, an act of bonding among members of the group. The gamboling cubs make contact with all.1.
