Targeted Teaching Strategy of the Week:

Collaborative Group Work

What is it? It involves bringing students together in small groups for the

common purpose of engaging in learning. Effective group work is well
planned and strategic. Students are grouped intentionally with each
student held accountable for contributing to the group work

Measuring Effectiveness

 Evidence of planned group work (strategic).
 Students are grouped intentionally with each student held

accountable for contributing to the group work. Activities are
designed so that students with diverse skill levels are supported as
well as challenged by their peers.
 Evidence of purposeful assignments within the group (students are
asked to compare and contrast*, evaluate, and create)
 Teachers can show how collaboration is designed and assessed in
class.
Collaborative work can be integrated with scaffolding and centers of
literacy groups, digital learning tools, as well as differentiation and writing
to learn.

INSTRUCTIONAL FOCUS

Critical Thinking- Teaching critical thinking skills is a necessity with our students because they are crucial skills

for living life. The term “critical thinking” is open to different interpretation, so let’s begin with a simple
perspective. It’s more than just thinking clearly or rationally; it’s about thinking independently. Critically thinking
about something means formulating your own opinions and drawing your own conclusions.

Strategies for Teaching Critical Thinking Skills

 Begin with a question
 Create a foundation
 Use Fluency
 Peer Groups
 Role playing
