slaves

20.5- living conditions of slaves

Slaves had a much more difficult way of living than the
rich white people. according to the text “slaves wore
clothing made of coarse homespun linen or rough ‘negro
cloth’ (page.275).” this shows that slaves had a hard
life because their clothing was made of very poor
material. therefore, the slaves had a more harder life
than the whites, and rich. according to the narrator
“the shoes usually fit so badly that slaves preferred
going barefoot much of the time. (page.275).” this is
especially relevant because the shoes they had were so
big or small that they would not wear any shoes.even
though they had shoes they didn't fit so they preferred
to be barefoot. according to the narrator “while slaves
were poorly housed and clothes compared to most white
southerners, they were were most likely to receive
medical care (page.275).” this means that even though
they had a rough life they at least received medical
care. as a result medical care was one less thing that
they had to worry about.

of music, art, songs, stories, and quilts. Like for example, they did
not forget their African roots. Across the South, slaves combined
their old traditions. This shows, that the African slaves had
positive way of their own roots together combining each other with
traditions. Another example,is new realities to create a
distinctive African American culture. This shows, that the African
American had their own culture of creating their things and stuff
from their culture. And lastly, slaves dances, songs, quilts all
reflected a combination of slaves. And have faced things in
America. So the Aspects of the African American roots had their
own culture dances, songs, quilts to have a good time for
themselves and learn new things in America.

Controlling slaves

In the south they used slaves for almost everything. But they mostly used
slaves for cotton production. As they grew more cotton, they needed more slaves to
create mass production so that the south could gain more money overall. But with
more slaves needed, there were more slaveholders that required more from the slaves
and if they're ever disobedient there are some consequences. One way that they kept
slaves under control is that the used very very harsh punishments on the disobedient
slaves. They branded them, beated them, whipped their backes, and other very harsh
forms of punishments. But this usually backfired on the slave holders because the
slaves can get so beat up that they can not work for a certain amount of time. Ths
shows that the slave owners had no mercy on the slaves and that they abused them for
their work that they should be doing themselves. Another way that they kept slaves
obedient is that made the slaves feel totally dependent on them. They made them feel
that they can't live without their owners housing them, clothing them, and feeding
them. So with the slaves believing them, they start to think that they couldn't live
without their owners and that if they ran away, they could die. The third way is
that they made the slaves independent from the outside world. Therefore the slaves
wouldnt run away because they don't know what’s outside of their owners’ fences. The
last and harshest way that the made rebellious slaves humble is that the slave
owners sent the slaves to slave breakers. Slave breakers are cruel people who can
turn bold spirited slaves to humble slaves by beating them constantly. They beat
them up so much that by the time that they are done, there is only a broken shell of
what the slaves used to be. Slave owners made slaves obedient by using harsh and
smart strategies therefore they mostly had humble slaves.
