The Latrobe Valley Express, Wednesday, 26 February, 2025 YOUR HOME AND GARDEN Autumn — Page 3 Autumn gardening tips with Jeffrey from TM&H Mitre 10 in Moe Hello! One thing you should know about me is my passion for gardening, especially when it comes to growing vegetables. That’s why autumn is my favourite season! Here are some helpful tips to kickstart your autumn gardening! As March rolls in, it is the perfect time to plant: • Carrots – These root vegetables thrive in the cool soil of early autumn. Ensure you prepare the soil by removing stones and debris to allow the roots to grow straight and strong. • Leek – Leeks requireabit of patience, but their subtle onion flavour is worth the wait. Plant the seedlings deep in the soil, which will help blanch the stems as they grow. • Rocket –Rocket is a fast-growing leafy green that adds a peppery punch to salads. Sow the seeds directly into well-drained soil for a quick harvest. Early Autumn: Brassica Bonanza Early autumn is ideal for brassica vegetables, which thrive in the cooler temperatures: • Broccoli – Plant seedlings in a sunny location with fertile soil. Broccoli loves a bit of space, so ensure you plant them about 30 cm apart. • Kale – Hardy and nutritious, kale is easy to grow. It can withstand cooler temperatures, making it a perfect choice for autumn planting. • Cauliflower – This vegetable requires rich, well-drained soil. Give it plenty of room to grow and ensure consistent watering for the best heads. Mid-Autumn: Root Vegetables and Leafy Greens As mid-autumn arrives, you can add more diversity to your vegetable garden with: • Beetroot – Beetroot loves the cooler weather. Sow seeds directly into the soil for a sweet, earthy harvest. • Brussel Sprouts – These require a longer growing season, so planting in mid-autumn allows them to develop fully. They prefer a sunny spot and fertile soil. • Spinach – Fast-growing and nutrientrich, spinach can be sown directly into the garden bed. It’s a versatile green that’s perfect for salads, soups, and more. • Radish – Radishes grow quickly and areagreat way to introduce children to gardening. They’re ready to harvest in just a few weeks! Late Autumn: Preparing for Winter As autumn winds down in May, it’s time to plant crops that will flourish into the cooler months: • Peas – Both regular and sweet peas can be planted now. They love climbing, so provide support with trellises or stakes. • Sweet Peas – Not only do they add beauty to your garden, but their fragrance is divine. Perfect for adding a splash of color. • Garlic – Plant garlic bulbs in a sunny spot with well-drained soil. They’ll establish roots over winter, ready to spring into growth as the weather warms. • Jerusalem Artichoke – These tubers are easy to grow and provide a tasty addition to your garden. Plant them in a sunny area with plenty of space to spread. So, grab your gardening gloves, enjoy the mild temperatures, and let your garden thrive this autumn. Whether you’reaseasoned gardener or a beginner, there’s no better time to plant and enjoy the fruits of your labor. bit of space, so ensure you plant them just a few weeks! Happy gardening

Page 6 — YOUR HOME AND GARDEN Autumn The Latrobe Valley Express, Wednesday, 26 February, 2025 Start as you mean to go on by making sure your home is energy efficient. By working to reduce energy wastage, you can cut energy bills and save money - as well as doing your bit for the environment. It requires you becoming aware of how energy is used, where it’s wasted, and how it can be used more effectively and efficiently in everyday life. Look out for bad habits Daily bad habits, like leaving the lights on when you’re not in the room or boiling a full kettle when you’re only making one coffee, can quickly add up. When you’re at home, dress in warm clothing in the winter and cooler clothing in the summer to stay comfortable without making your heater and AC work harder. Be energy conscious around the house and you’ll soon see a saving in your energy bills. Windows Windows can cause your home to lose up to 40% of its heat in winter and gain up to 87% of its heat in summer. Lighter coloured blinds are best in the summer months because they deflect the heat back outside, while darker blinds absorb the heat, warming up the room. During winter, heavy or layered curtains come in handy by increasing the insulation in your home while decreasing the amount of heat that escapes through your windows. Shade Surrounding your home with plants not only creates a more tranquil and relaxing environment but they can also work wonders when it comes to reducing your energy usage at home. Deciduous plants (those that shed their leaves annually) are great in particular because they shelter your home from the sun’s heat during summer but let warmth in during winter. Hot water Heating water in your home takes a lot of energy. It can contribute up to 30% of your home energy use. Out of date hot water systems can be a big drain on resources. Typically, your hot water system uses more energy than all of your other electrical goods combined, so be sure to explore modern, energysaving systems. Installing a waterefficient shower head can help to minimise the amount of hot water you’re using in your home. Lighting Upgrading to energy-efficient lighting is an easy way to reduce the amount of energy that you use. Replace the light globes in your house with energy-efficient bulbs such as LEDs – they can last 20-25 times longer than typical halogen bulbs. Using lamps is also a great way to use less power because you’re only lighting the spaces that you need. Weather sealing Up to 25% of household heat loss is caused by air draughts from improper seals. It’s a great idea to go through your home and check the seals on all doors and windows for any gaps. There are lots of other sneaky ways for heat to escape and a short while spent draught proofing your home can have lasting benefits. Wait for a windy day then check the edges of all of your windows and doors-you’ll be able to hear a draught, as well as feel it. Draughts can be a real problem in older homes and eliminating them is key to maintaining a comfortable temperature without spending a fortune on heating and cooling. Choosing efficient appliances Household appliances can account for up to one third of your energy bill. If you’re buying a new fridge, freezer, television, washing machine, clothes dryer, dishwasher or air-conditioner, look for the Energy Rating Label—the more stars, the less energy the product will use. High star-rated models can cost a little more, but choosing a cheaper less energy-efficient product could end up costing more in the long run. Using appliances wisely ‘Standby power’ used by products like microwaves, televisions and gaming consoles can account for 10 per cent of your electricity bill. If it’s got a little light or clock—it’s using power. Running costs can be reduced by turning off appliances at the wall when they are not in use, getting rid of any additional fridges and freezers that are not needed, and drying clothes on the line rather than the dryer. Seasonal savings in your home in the cooler months Every degree you keep your heating above 20 C can add up to 10 per cent to your energy usage. Set your heater thermostat to between 18 C and 20 C. Service your heater at least every two years to keep it operating at maximum efficiency. Consider new, energyefficient heaters and appliances. Use a warm doona so heating can be turned down, or off, while everyone is asleep. In general, electric blankets only need be on for a short time – around 10 minutes on an average setting. “By working to reduce energy wastage, you can cut energy bills and save money-as well as doing your bit for the environment” Energy efficiency in your home

Page 8 — YOUR HOME AND GARDEN Autumn The Latrobe Valley Express, Wednesday, 26 February, 2025 Was your home built before 1990? Do you know where asbestos is hiding in your home? Did you know that approximately 1/3 of all homes in Australia contain asbestos products? If your house was built before 1990, it is likely that it would have some asbestos-containing materials. Floor Take a look at the floor coverings in each room. Asbestos containing floor coverings or underlay’s were more commonly (but not exclusively) located in wet areas of the household (Bathrooms, Kitchens the Laundry etc). Walls Once painted, it’s easy to be tricked into thinking that everything is the same product. You must remember that asbestos cement products were moulded into all sorts of shapes. Heaters AC Sheet was a great material to be utilised around heat because of its fire resistant properties Ovens and Chimneys AC Sheet was also commonly used to seal off a chimney. A good example of this is when the chimney has been sealed off to house an oven. There may be a cement sheet used to cap off the hole only or there may be a full surround installed. Wet areas Wet areas areaprime location for asbestos products. Behind sink splashbacks, feature panels in bathrooms, bath hobs, bath aprons, bath surrounds, etc. Ceiling The ceiling itself may be asbestos cement sheet. The cover straps if present may be asbestos cement and the patches, light bases and vent covers may all be formed from moulded asbestos cement. Flues Be aware that there are still a few asbestos ‘flues’ in use also. These were used for heaters but also for hot water services. Over 3000 products were used in residential, commercial and industrial settings and are known to have contained asbestos. Consider getting professional advice. ACV/ GARDS recommends an audit of where asbestos may be in your home and consider removal by a qualified registered removalist. How to get an asbestos test and find your local licensed asbestos removalist Go to www.asbestos.vic.gov.au to find out more Asbestos lurks in more places than you’d think Supplied by ACV/GARDS Asbestos and Silica Awareness Day Event 6 Finally some free time to do some home improvements? Asbestos Asbestos was used in over 3000 products www.gards.org 211 Lloyd Street Moe Mobile: 0407 274 173 GP1678626 THERE COULD BE ASBESTOS Before you renovate... get your house checked by a qualified asbestos inspector. Exposure to asbestos can have significant health consequences including death. If your planning on renovation, treat asbestos as you would any other hazardous material.

The Latrobe Valley Express, Wednesday, 26 February, 2025 YOUR HOME AND GARDEN Autumn — Page 13 Tips for creating your outdoor space The beautiful thing about Australia is we have blue skies for 2/3 of the year.Alot of us have outdoor spaces but often don’t make the best of them. When starting the process of building your dream outdoor living space, dream big. Outdoor water features, fireplace, television, lap pool, your dream barbeque. Write down everything you have ever wanted in an outdoor living space, and then strip back from there. Here are top five tips for designing your outdoor dream space. 1. Find the spot Spend some time in your backyard, and determine the suitable space for your outdoor living space. If your backyard is onaslope, consider finding the flattest part of the garden and laying some pavers down to create a flat surface. Typically you would place the outdoor living space closest to the home, as this brings more ease when entertaining and carrying food and drinks outside from your inside kitchen. However, don’t be discouraged if you feel the right space is at the back of the garden; there is potential to make that work. 2. Create a comfortable living space There is no reason why your outdoor living space shouldn’t be as luxurious and comfortable as your indoor one. Create a space that your friends and your family will want to spend time in. If you build an area that doesn’t have a sense of comfortability, chances are you’ll end up sitting inside or in a more comfortable space. Consider putting in an outdoor fire pit or electric fireplace as a focal point to gather around. If you prioritse an outdoor television over an outdoor fireplace, consider buying a television that features an image or video of a working place. Even though this will not let off any warmth, people will naturally gather around this. 3. Build an outdoor pizza oven or kitchen We all love sitting in a comfortable space, but a warm meal and a glass of wine will bring another level to the experience. Consider a side bench with a sink, outdoor stovetop or barbeque, and a fridge to pull together that dream outdoor kitchen area. Alternatively, consider building an outdoor pizza oven for a point of difference. Remember – think about what you prioritise, and build a space for that. 4. Sound System Wire an outdoor sound system up so you and your guests can listen to music whilst outside. Consider rock speakers in the garden to keep the speakers hidden yet still creating ambience in the garden. 5. Lighting Lighting is often overlooked but is one of the essential elements of any space. Ensure the living space is well lit so you and your guests can see where they are walking and don’t have to move inside when the sun goes down. Equally, build the lighting out into the garden to open out space, and consider uplighting some of the more beautiful trees and plants in your garden.
