6 For the past few years, Nat Dowling from Wander into Wildness and Bec Taylor from Awaken Yoga Studio have been offering unique yoga sound healing sessions to nourish nervous systems and soothe the soul. The nervous system is the mechanism through which humans perceive connection and safety, and respond or Nourish your nervous system Feeling frazzled or on the edge of burnout? Sunday Soothe could be the antidote you need, and the pathway to a good night’s sleep. react to perceived threat. “It regulates your stress response, and activates a range of physiological, mental and emotional switches that affect your energy levels, decision making, engagement capacity and other health variables,” says Nat, who is a certified sound healing practitioner. Tired and wired systems need regular nourishment and healthy ways to process emotions. “Our nervous systems have been knocked off kilter – costs of living, the pandemic, family violence and global conflicts, all of these issues can make the world seem noisy and threatening,” Nat says. “Many people feel flat, agitated or out of whack, but can’t put their finger on why, or aren’t sure what to do to come back to balance.” The good news is that you have direct access to regulate your nervous system, and that’s exactly what Sunday Soothe is designed to support. “The body knows what to do. We share ancient wisdom practices that connect us to the body, practices that modern science is starting to understand,” Bec says. “We breathe, the heart pumps, brain neurons fire. And mostly, this happens without us thinking about it. But when we use tools that bring awareness to these processes, we can harness our own systems to shift how we feel.” The breath is one of the simplest ways to regulate your nervous system – to activate a stress response or calm down. Bec and Nat curate a unique sequence of movement and stillness through breathwork, kundalini yoga, mantra and sound meditation. Sunday Soothe sessions happen monthly in Castlemaine and Kyneton. 7 Equine-assisted therapy and acupuncture – a unique combination HORSES Powerful yet sensitive, horses give us immediate feedback about our inner feelings, and at the same time accept us totally. Equine Assisted Therapy helps adults and children with a wide range of issues, including those related to life transitions, end of life, neurodiversity, gender diversity ... as well as trauma, anxiety, grief and depression. Working with horses in a therapeutic setting helps people build self-esteem and self-confidence and an awareness of their own internal state, as well as that of another. All of this takes place in a non-threatening and safe manner. The connection and trusting relationship that the participant builds with both the horse and the therapist is the key to this work. The presence of the horse, who is powerful but also gentle and attentive, can be very comforting to people who are distressed and in pain. Black Horse Therapy’s Elizabeth Hannah says you don’t need to have a diagnosed condition to benefit from these sessions. “People find that they help with general stress and wellbeing,” she says. “Practising mindfulness with these wonderful creatures in a peaceful natural setting helps people to find calm within themselves and feel ready to return to the challenges of their daily lives.” ACUPUNCTURE Acupuncture and other related techniques (such as cupping, massage and gua sha) are also very effective in relieving stress and anxiety. They restore internal balance and a sense of calm. Research in the UK has found acupuncture to be useful in treating people with PTSD. Elizabeth has recently used a combination of acupuncture treatment and therapy sessions with the horses to help a young person with an ASD diagnosis and severe emotional dysregulation. They have experienced a marked improvement in their ability to stay calm in situations where they might otherwise have escalated and become violent. Acupuncture can be given to children as well as adults, and acupressure massage can be used in place of needles. Elizabeth is excited to be able to offer a combination of Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and Chinese medicine – two powerful and wonderful forms of healing. 8 LOCAL CARE from pregnancy to parenthood Whether you’re having your first baby or expanding your family, at Dhelkaya Health they are here to care for you and support you. Dhelkaya Health is a small service, offering local pregnancy, labour and birth and early parenting care for healthy women with normal pregnancies. Their maternity team works closely with Bendigo Health, the regional health service, to support local women and babies who need more specialist care. Dhelkaya offers the ‘gold standard’ of midwifery-led care; the continuity of care model, where women see the same midwife throughout their pregnancy, labour and birth and early parenting. Dhelkaya is a place where all people can feel safe, comfortable and respected. The maternity service recently expanded and now offers planned caesareans and water births through the midwifery group practice model, which is supported by local general practitioner obstetricians and general practitioner paediatrics and other specialists. The new birthing services means Dhelkaya can now better support you by offering more flexibility for you to choose in line with your needs and wishes. It means more people can enjoy the same care close to home with a midwife that is known, in a place where you feel safe and supported. The maternity service acknowledges the traditional practices and wisdom of First Nations people. If you, your partner or your baby identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, you may choose to have an Aboriginal health liaison officer or other support person with you throughout your pregnancy, labour and birth and early parenting. Your views, beliefs and values will be heard, understood and respected at all times. Dhelkaya Health’s Maternity Services is a multiple award winner, having won the Excellence in Women’s Health category in the Victorian Public Healthcare Awards and HESTA Midwife of the Year in 2023. The high-profile wins are testament to how much its clients value the womencentered care, continuity of care and choice. If you’re having a baby and you live in Castlemaine, Bendigo, Kyneton, Daylesford, Woodend, the Macedon Ranges or surrounding regions, contact their midwives to see if the service is right for you. 9 The Thompson Method is a gentle, evidence-based breastfeeding method that aims toward a gentle birth and pain-free breastfeeding experience. It was created by Dr Robyn Thompson, a midwife with more than 45 years’ experience who was awarded a PhD for her research into why so many women were being discharged from hospital with painful nipple trauma and other breastfeeding complications such as engorgement and mastitis. The Thompson Method challenges the techniques, linked with painful nipple trauma, that are commonly taught in most hospitals. It’s for all women who want to breastfeed, but particularly those giving birth in the hospital system because it offers a gentle alternative to help women avoid the most common and painful breastfeeding complications. But it’s more than just the technique on how to get a good latch. It is that, but it’s so much more. It’s having the knowledge to understand that what happens during your labour and birth will greatly influence your breastfeeding journey. It’s understanding how breast milk is produced so that you have the confidence to trust that your breasts will nourish your baby without fear of low supply. It’s about being empowered to feel that you are in control of your labour, birth and breastfeeding experience. It’s the awareness that nipple shields, bottles, teats and dummies (pacifiers) will also impact on your breastfeeding journey. And at the very foundation of this gentle, evidence based method is a very powerful belief ... a belief that every woman and her baby is unique. 11 Strength training for longevity The names behind the gym, which opened just recently, are Ben Gunning and Caitlin Newitt, Ted Tolfree and Shey Newitt, and Justin and Audrey O’Donohue. Ben and Caitlin have experience with owning Snap gym franchises, Shey and Ted also bring years of business experience in owning Crisp Salad bars in Melbourne, and Audrey and Justin have been business owners in Woodend for six years with Adjust Pilates. Kiera Bulluss rounds off the team as gym manager, bringing her years of experience in the fitness industry on board. Several personal trainers are also on the team. Membership to Snap Fitness will not only give you access to the Woodend gym, but access to any Snap Fitness gyms in Australia and worldwide. The membership will include a number of both high and low-impact classes and a recovery/wellness centre is also in the pipeline. Snap Fitness Woodend will have high-end TechnoGym cardio equipment, ranging from treadmills, bikes, erg rowers, stair climber and elliptical machines. Justin O’Donohue, who has a Masters in Strength and Conditioning, thinks cardio fitness training is underutilised. “I think cardiovascular fitness is often put in the too-hard basket by many people,” Justin says. “Since the increase in knowledge around high-intensity training, we know that doing 4-6 bouts of 30 seconds all out on a bike, rower etc. punctuated by much lower intensity rest periods, elicits the same aerobic physiological changes in the body as a 30-40 minute run. These changes are profound in terms of longevity by improving cholesterol and blood pressure, brain function and emotional wellbeing. It’s probably about finding a form of cardio you like, and being prepared to work hard to really elevate your heart rate.” Justin has been a strength coach for many years and has seen the benefits of strength training in individuals of all ages. “Research shows that strength training can have a huge impact across the lifespan,” he says. “We now know that individuals in their 70s and 80s who weight train can still grow muscle tissue, improve bone density and strength, and drastically reduce the risk of falls. For younger athletes, being stronger reduces your risk of injury dramatically, allowing you to excel in your chosen sport. Strength training promotes better flexibility and mobility by moving your joints through greater ranges. It also has a huge impact on your mental health and self-worth.” According to Justin, most of all it is a lot of fun. “Many clients who I have had over the years who thought they would hate weight training becoming very addicted, in a healthy way,” he says. Three local couples have joined forces to bring the high-class training facility, Snap Fitness, to Woodend. Left to right: The team behind the new Woodend training facility, Shey Newitt, Ted Tolfree, Audrey O’Donohue, Justin O’Donohue, Caitlin Newitt and Ben Gunning.
12 Strength is the foundation of wellbeing. That’s what the team at Better Stronger know to be true and they can work with anyone of any age and ability to achieve their goals. Starting strength exercise can be intimidating and fear of injury can be a big barrier to starting. So Better Stronger focuses on the basics: technique training, injury prevention and evidence-based coaching. Your program will be planned around any pre-existing condition. You’ll have an accredited coach right by your side in the gym, or for those who prefer to exercise at home, app-based programming and monitoring from an accredited exercise physiologist. “The most current research shows that regular strength exercise is something everyone should do, no matter your age. In fact, strength exercise becomes even more important for health as you age,” said Miranda Foyster, AEP. Getting stronger gives you better balance, speed, endurance, flexibility, movement and quality of life. Strength training is also beneficial for physical and mental chronic conditions, including diabetes, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, pain, anxiety and depression. Strength is not about muscle size. You can be small and strong (you can be big and strong too, if that’s what you want to achieve). Better Stronger’s focus is improving what you can do, and providing enjoyable and sustainable exercise options. 15 Dancing into wellbeing Over the Moon Studios in Castlemaine offers a range of dance genres with classes for all ages. OTM has reinstated Creative Dance classes for adults, on Tuesday evenings and Thursday mornings, which build both physical wellness and social connection. Dance is a great way to continue movement into older adulthood. These classes are also disability inclusive. OTM founder Edna Reinhardt says that outwardly the class appears to be structured dance improvisation where music, props and ideas inspire movement. “Inwardly, it is an opportunity to embody a diverse range of music for one hour a week,” Edna says. “It is a non verbal, sometimes serious and often playful experience. “In this atmosphere of creativity, it’s easy to be present and joyful.” Participant Eliza Hull says creative dance is a place she comes to connect through movement, with herself and with others. “It’s a non-judgement dance class, and brings so much joy to my week,” Eliza says. “The music is varied and beautiful, and you don’t have to have a dance background to be involved. “I have never danced in my life and have a disability and it always feel so accessible and inclusive for me. It’s creative, inspiring, meditative and fun. I always leave feeling lighter.” Similarly, Sally Polmear says Creative Dance at Over The Moon offers a regular space for her to be playful and free, like stepping back into childhood. “The teachers surprise us with their creative suggestions and often I surprise myself with what emerges in response to the music and props and the movements of others in the class,” Sally says. “Attuning to others without words is a joy to experience and I love that age is no barrier to this dance form. “Even as my movement becomes more restricted, there is always the possibility to respond with subtle awareness. “I might arrive to class tired, but I always float out the door.” KN277891
16 Finding the tools to Supporting trauma-affected women to improve their relationship with food and drink self heal F leur Elizabeth’s passion and motivation to launch Change Talk Coaching come from her own lived experience with trauma. As a child, she experienced ongoing mental abuse, being built up and torn down within what she describes as a narcissistic family. She also suffered sexual abuse by people she knew and relied on. “After one particularly traumatic encounter, I stopped eating and developed bulimia, a crude and complicated food disorder,” Fleur says. “As I got older, I used alcohol to numb my trauma and hid behind a ‘false self’ to escape my pain, creating a path of destruction and selfloathing behaviour.” Working with her own coach/ therapist, Fleur pushed through a spectacular personal transformation: living in peace and acceptance, and loving the woman she has become today. She became a qualified nutritional coach and then explored more specialised psychology studies to evolve her focus on the relationship between trauma and the drivers and patterns of behaviours with food and alcohol.
17 “I have learned so much in all my professional studies and found them profoundly healing for me, too,” Fleur says. “I want to help others learn and benefit from what has profoundly changed my human experience.” Fleur built an online course to give trauma-affected women a platform to learn the life-changing and grounding skills she developed, all in the safety of their own home. Fleur says her goal is to help women who suffer in silence, and give them the tools to self heal in their own safe space. “As a specialised coach using a blend of nutrition and psychology modalities, I focus on enhancing motivational change,” she says. “I’ve curated an eight-week online course to take you from feeling out of control and stuck in repetitive self-loathing actions to being an empowered, more confident woman.” The course is available in an online video learning format or in a printed workbook. Feeling like one of the lucky ones, Fleur has also initiated a campaign, ‘This is not your secret anymore!’, bravely sharing her trauma stories and struggles with food and alcohol in a bid to normalise the conversation of abuse. Knowing first-hand how lonely and debilitating shame can be, this campaign is to help others feel less alone and break free of the shame of abuse and find their peace. “These women need to know that help is available and that change is possible with the right tools and skills,” Fleur says. She says the confinement of shame should be the burden of the abuser, not the victim. A trial is currently under way to review the course suitability for women accessing Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health with a history of trauma. Fleur is also focused on supporting not-for-profit women’s organisations and established health centres, offering the course as an additional resource for traumaaffected women in communities around Australia. “Women need to know that help is available and that change is possible with the right tools and skills.”

19 Chiropractors will tailor your treatment Chiropractic is described by the World Federation of Chiropractic as a ‘health profession concerned with the diagnosis, management and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health’. Dr Karli Newton, chiropractor with Performance One in Kyneton, says chiropractic treatment can benefit people of all ages from all walks of life. “As with all healthcare, it’s all about finding what works for the individual and making sure you are getting the desired results,” Karli says. “A good chiropractor will listen carefully to your needs and make sure they work with you to achieve the desired outcome. “The most common reasons a person would visit a chiropractor are back pain, neck pain and headaches. “In addition to this, we also diagnose and help treat many common sporting injuries, degenerative issues and musculoskeletal concerns.” In Australia, chiropractors share a common university education pathway with osteopaths and physiotherapists. A chiropractic degree takes five years and covers extensive learning in anatomy and physiology as well as units specific to chiropractic care including physical therapy, physical rehabilitation, radiology, nutrition, paediatrics, geriatrics, public health and evidencebased practice. Chiropractors are governed by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and are required to complete yearly professional development to ensure optimal safety and an increased skill set. “Chiropractic uses a variety of techniques to correct dysfunctions within the body, help to ease pain, improve movement and enhance health and wellbeing,” Karli says. “Chiropractic care can look different for everybody. For some people it can be a more gentle approach in soft tissue, mobilisations and low-force adjusting techniques. For others it could be more manual manipulative therapies. “Chiropractors can also provide exercises and rehabilitation, nutritional recommendations and lifestyle advice. We will tailor your treatment to suit your individual needs and preferences around care.” 150 Mollison Street, Kyneton www.performanceone.com.au (03) 5422 6488 Providing professional Chiropractic care for all ages. 20 Easy home strategies Prevention can save you a lot of energy. Start with wise self-care at home, in the best season to hibernate and regenerate. Dose up on zinc and vitamin C, take a bath and have some early nights. If needed, get proactive! Warm and soothe your body with honey, lemon and ginger drinks. Sore throat: A salt water gargle at early onset can help cleanse and soothe a sore throat when your immune system starts to fight back. Blocked nose and sinus pain: Try a steam inhalation with a bowl of hot water, add just a few drops of eucalyptus and place a towel over your head to breath in the vapours. This can work wonders to loosen pressure, relieve congestion and ease a wet cough. Eucalyptus oil on a handkerchief or scarf, smelt regularly, is another great way to protect and maintain your respiratory system. If your cough is dry, just use steam alone to moisten the dryness, and relieve the irritation in your chest. This is particularly effective at night before bed for a persistent exhausting cough. If your body is aching, take an Epsom salt bath, generate a sweat, then literally go to bed and ‘sweat it out’. Alternatively, create a lush footbath to warm up your feet. Your whole body benefits! 21 Asking for help doesn’t mean losing your independence As you get older, you might need a little more support day-to-day. The same goes for a loved one, a neighbour or a friend. You might find it harder to do the things you used to do meaning that living independently is becoming a challenge. But asking for help doesn’t mean losing your independence. Help at home looks different for everyone. It may mean getting help with basic household tasks like shopping and cooking. Or it could be receiving personal care to bathe, dress and get in and out of bed. Getting a little help with daily activities means you can stay independent in your own home for longer. Government-funded Home Care Packages are designed to help you live at home and continue doing the things that make you happy for as long as you can. They aren’t just for nursing services and support to attend medical appointments. Home Care Packages give access to different kinds of services that can enhance your quality of life while supporting your independence. Things like gardening and home maintenance, meal preparation and delivered meals and social support services can give you back valuable time to do the things you love while keeping you connected with your community. Home Care Packages represent more than just a safety net; they can make the later years of living at home more enjoyable. By embracing the support offered by these packages, older Australians can not only live longer in their own homes, they can live a life with more connection and joy. 23 Making the most of their day It’s not just about the clinical needs but discovering each person’s interests and hobbies helps the carers and lifestyle teams ensure even the most frail residents make the most of their day. Bupa Aged Care’s passionate lifestyle teams are committed to providing residents with a range of activities for them to get involved in. It is never too late to start a new hobby! When it comes to the health and wellbeing of the older adults in our communities, taking care of the whole person comes first and foremost at Bupa Aged Care. The best thing we ever did was to come here, the very best. Bupa Woodend is a village, and we feel part of a family within that village. I am the resident representative and I love to support the other residents to get any issues solved. Our room has the most fantastic outlook, we’re able to go out to our own balcony. I’m well looked after and I take every day as it comes, I like to call these my Golden Years. My philosophy is to go in while you still have the quality of life to enjoy it. It’s a hard decision, but it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. I can still go out with my family and I get to enjoy all the activities that they have here at Bupa Kyneton. Having Hugo my dog is very important to me, I like being independent and looking after Hugo makes me get up every day and look after someone else. I’m 87 years old and he was given as a birthday present, he encourages me to get out and walk around through the courtyards. Everybody pats him, everyone loves him. If anyone is ever upset he goes for a visit and cheers people up. He helps people settle. He sleeps at the bottom of my bed every night and we play ball. I moved into Bupa Woodend with my wife and best friend Mary who had Parkinson’s when her health challenges became too much even with external help. Mary battled the disease for a long time, but she lost her fight two years ago. The staff were all outstanding. At any time, day or night, the staff were there to support and look after Mary. The clinical care is so important. I like to work in the garden looking after the roses, it gets me out in the fresh air and has the added benefit of helping out Andrew the gardener. 25 It’s scrambling your brain! Love is blind, the saying goes, and we can now say that it also scrambles the brain. And thanks to a worldfirst Australian study, we are now a step closer to understanding why. It is well known that romantic love changes the brain, releasing the so-called love hormone oxytocin, responsible for the euphoria we feel when falling in love. Now, researchers from the ANU, University of Canberra and University of South Australia have measured how a part of the brain is responsible for putting our loved one on a pedestal in that first flush of romance. In the world’s first study investigating the link between the human brain’s behavioural activation system and romantic love, researchers surveyed 1556 young adults who identified as being ‘in love’. The survey questions focused on the emotional reaction to their partner, their behaviour around them, and the focus they placed on their loved one above all else. It turns out that when we are in love, our brain reacts differently. It makes the object of our affections the centre of our lives. University of Canberra academic and Uni SA Adjunct Associate Professor, Dr Phil Kavanagh, says the study shows that romantic love is linked to changes in behaviour as well as emotion. “We know the role that oxytocin plays in romantic love, because we get waves of it circulating throughout our nervous system and blood stream when we interact with loved ones,” Phil says. “The way that loved ones take on special importance, however, is due to oxytocin combining with dopamine, a chemical that our brain releases during romantic love. Essentially, love activates pathways in the brain associated with positive feelings.” Hypnotise your way to better health Are you always promising yourself that you will get around – very soon – to losing weight or quitting smoking? “Trouble is, ‘lifestyle choices’ such as smoking cigarettes and eating unhealthy foods can be really difficult to change, especially when we rely on our will power,” says Marianne Pattinson of Kyneton Hypno Therapies. “Because, ultimately, it is not our willpower, or even our conscious mind that determines these decisions. They tend to be made by ancient ‘programs’, deep in our subconscious. “We still have those same bodies today, but live in a totally different environment. Hypnotherapy is a safe, available and inexpensive means to enable people to have some control over those lifestyle choices such as poor nutrition and smoking. “It works by eliminating ‘cravings’ for unhealthy foods that most overweight people have, and for smoking. Hypnotherapy works by placing you in a deeply relaxed state, whereby we can access your subconscious mind, and replace those unhelpful ‘programs’ with healthy programs,”says Marianne. In love? 26 In the intricate symphony of human health, stress and anxiety often play the role of conflicting notes, disrupting the delicate balance of hormones in both men and women. The endocrine system, our body’s hormonal command centre, is profoundly affected by our emotional state, leading to a cascade of consequences when stressors loom large. For women, elevated cortisol levels can disrupt the delicate interplay between estrogen and progesterone, resulting in irregular menstrual cycles, intensified premenstrual symptoms, and heightened risks of conditions like PCOS and infertility. Moreover, stress can exacerbate menopausal symptoms, compounding the challenges of this transitional phase. Men similarly face hormonal turbulence under stress. Chronic stress can lead to an imbalance in cortisol levels, the infamous stress hormone, which in turn can suppress testosterone production. This hormonal disturbance may manifest as decreased libido, muscle loss, and even fertility issues, alongside mood disturbances and fatigue. Fortunately, there’s hope in multiple holistic approaches, and that’s why the naturopaths at Gisborne Health Essentials work with their other practitioners, fostering not just physical health but also emotional and mental wellbeing through consultations, qi gong and yoga practices, as well as over-the-counter support when needed (being one of only few in Victoria offering this over-the-counter service). 27 The community pharmacy is more and more becoming the basic entry point to healthcare, especially in a small town like Malmsbury which doesn’t have a GP clinic. Pharmacist Beshr Farid says that, typical of a community pharmacy, the Malmsbury pharmacy has become a primary healthcare provider. “We are the first to be seen, for kids with allergies, first aid, dressings, wounds, etc.,” Beshr says. “We can liaise with a doctor for an appointment if needed and we treat our customers like family. “We’ll go the extra mile to give personal and professional service.” Beshr, who has been in Malmsbury now for about five years, chose pharmacy over medicine because he wanted to combine a healthcare background with a business background. He was drawn to the country town of Malmsbury because of its close-knit community. “I probably know everyone in Malmsbury by name,” he says. “I know their families, they tell me their stories, I tell them my stories. “Everyone knows everyone here. It’s lovely.” Beshr says his employees – all local people themselves – share his passion for being trusted, reliable and approachable. “If someone comes and forgets their wallet, it’s fine, they can come back later,” he says. “Everyone is genuine. “We even remind people when their medication is due, and check that their script is right. We have that close relationship.” The first stop for healthcare KN278112/K 81 Mollison Street, MALMSBURY Tel: 03 5423 2226 Fax: 03 5413 9707 [email protected] www.malmsburypharmacy.com.au OPEN ON SATURDAYS UNTIL 3 PM Monday to Friday 9 am - 5.30 pm, Saturdays 9 am – 3.00 pm. 29 Best foot forward What we put on our feet affects our whole body! But there is a style of shoe for every foot and that’s why choosing the proper footwear is very important when it comes to your physical and foot health. If you have ‘foot problems’ consider orthotic shoes. Correctly fitted, they can provide whole body alignment and proper posture, stability of unstable joints in the foot and ankle support around the arch of the foot and probably best of all – more mobility and less foot pain. If you suffer from foot pain, ankle injuries, flat feet or have specific conditions that affect your feet, knees, lower back and hips, there are a variety of orthoticfriendly shoes available to provide you with comfort and relief. If you’ve ever worn orthotics, you know that they are a total game-changer when it comes to getting rid of your heel pain. Not only do they relieve the pain, they also help you avoid the need for surgery. Runners can also benefit from the extra support orthotics offer. Ditch the prefabricated insoles that came with the shoes when you bought them, and you’ll be able to enjoy the relief mile after mile. Generally, sneakers with a wide enough toe box, a high heel counter, and stable arch should work with both custom and prefabricated orthotics. Orthotic shoes can fit many situations. If you are on your feet all day, consider a ‘work’ pair. We don’t want to call them ‘sensible’ shoes, but it’s a sound idea to invest in a pair even if you haven’t got a foot problem – it just makes sense! Most of us wear shoes of some type every day, from fluffy slippers to heavy work boots and everything in between. And our feet come in many different shapes and sizes – small, big, narrow, wide, some with individual oddities and some not – but one thing they all have in common is footwear. 23 High Street, Kyneton 03 5422 2090 Locally owned and operated and proud stockists of leading brands. 30 Health ... it’s a daily effort! A comment Kyneton green grocer Dean Lamb often hears is “How do I find time to cook healthy meals and exercise?” “Finding time, or more accurately making time, is really all about our priorities,” he says. “Unfortunately, we either find time for health and fitness or we are forced to make time for sickness. “While we can’t keep all ailments away, we should endeavour to manage all those things that are within our control to give us the best chance of good health.” Dean says these days we have such great resources for learning more about how to manage our health. If we are inquisitive enough to search a topic, there is plenty of great information available. “Try to do something every day that will lead to better health,” he says. “I try to do something every day but when I can’t, I don’t dwell on that, I’ll try again tomorrow.” Do what you can when you can and you will find most days you will be able to do at least some little thing that will lead to better health, Dean suggests. He says one of the best, everyday health areas to focus on is what we consume. “Unfortunately, if you’re like me and you love your tucker, it often is the case that less is best,” he says. “Try to limit your alcohol, reduce your sugar intake and eat littleto-no processed foods. Focus on plenty of good natural water, and real food. “Personally, I’m an omnivore and I enjoy including meat, fish, dairy and eggs in my diet. Everything in moderation.” Dean says it’s crucial we get enough protein in our diet. With muscle mass one of the most important things to ensure health when we age, it stands to reason that we need to get enough protein to keep those muscles in tip top shape. “I try to sneak a little extra protein into my every day meals. If I am having rolled oats for example, I will often add an egg and a spoon of bovine colostrum to crank up my protein intake. I also add a little turmeric for its anti-inflammatory benefits. “There are plenty of plantbased protein boosters available if that is your preference. “I also try to include a little collagen, vitamin C and D, into my supplement regime, especially in winter. “There is a huge range of functional foods that you can consider adding to your diet to help support good health. Mushroom powders, essential greens, maca, collagen, NAC, the list goes on and on.” Dean encourages everyone to take some time to research what’s available, its benefits and application and to do all you can to support your own health journey.
