On October 26th the Jazz Club will present its first evening
performance of the season with the five-time Grammy-
nominated arranger/orchestrator Shelly Berg at Holley
Hall, Beatrice Friedman Symphony Center. Shelly is well-
known in our community, having played in JCS festivals

CELEBRATING

By Jo Morello

How do you describe 40 years of bringing glorious jazz to our
community—and to jazz lovers from around the world—in
under 1,000 words? You can’t. And although a picture may
be worth a thousand words, there’s not enough space for the
thousands of photos that tell the story of the Jazz Club of Sarasota.
So let’s just jump in.

We’ll start with who we are. The Jazz Club of Sarasota is a volunteer-
driven, not-for-profit, Florida corporation dedicated to preserving
and promoting jazz, America’s original musical art form. Founded
in 1980 by Hal and Evelyn Davis, the Jazz Club has approximately
800 members and is growing. It presents over 80 performances
at 54 events throughout the year—mainly during “the Season”—
including the 40th Sarasota Jazz Festival, set for March 8-14, 2020.

The Club traces its origin to the
Davises and owes its continued
existence to the hundreds of
volunteers who have dedicated
untold hours of time and talent to
share the music they love.

In the late ’70s, Hal and Evelyn Hal and Evelyn Davis
moved to Sarasota from New
York, where he had been vice-
president of Gray Advertising and
publicist for Benny Goodman.
Missing their music, they invited
a few friends to listen to jazz
records with them. Thus was born

jazzclubsarasota.org 10

the Jazz Club of Sarasota—but they yearned for live music.

They got their wish in November 1980. Hal called on his good friend,
acclaimed guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, to play for the Club’s first Member
Concert, which drew 280 people. Bucky played in return for airfare,
stayed at the Davis home, and even brought a bonus: his 20-year-
old guitarist son. John Pizzarelli made his debut here and has since
achieved stardom. That concert started a trend for the Club—booking
established talent along with emerging artists.

Many prominent musicians have
moved to Sarasota because of
the Club’s reputation “and also
because of our many Floridian
delights,” said area resident Dick
Hyman. Others have included
Bob Haggart, Jerry Jerome,
John LaPorta, Walt Levinsky,
Bobby Rosengarden, and Randy
Sandke. (Dick Hyman and Randy
Sandke are playing in the 2020
Festival.) We’ll publish a list of the
many musicians who have graced
our stages (many of them more
than once) in the January issue
of our newsletter, Sarasota Jazz
Sounds.

On May 26-28, 1981, the fledgling Jerry Roucher, president, 1990- 2000; Hal Davis,
organization held the first Sarasota founder; president, 1980-1990

Jazz Festival, the “Hall of Fame Jazz Stars,” in Holley Hall. Based on its

success, the Club added annual festivals to its slate of activities. It also

joined the Professional Alliance of Performing Arts and initiated new

programs—another trend that would continue over its lifetime.

Jazz has never been confined to concert halls, whether on New
Orleans streets, Chicago speakeasies, or churches, back porches, or
alleyways—nor is that the case in Sarasota. From its very start, the
Jazz Club has offered its music in schools, on the water, in parks, on
trolleys, at the movies—anywhere a cat can tap out a rhythm or play an
instrument. Most programs still endure decades later, even as the Club
adds new ones.

THE JAZZ CLUB OF SARASOTA
1980 - 2020

Every year is momentous for the Jazz Club. For example, besides its
first concert (1980) and first Festival (1981), here are other highlights
through the first ten years of Club activities.

1982: Dedicated its Festival to Louis Armstrong, with his widow
Lucille in attendance.

1983: As membership grew to 850, moved its festivals to the Van
Wezel Performing Arts Hall; began a newsletter, and started Jazz
on the Water.

1984: Was a founder of American Federation of Jazz Societies.

1985: Opened an office.

1986: Joined the newly formed Sarasota County Arts Council, with
Hal Davis as the first president.

1987: Introduced Joy of Jazz and the Satchmo Award (page 36);
welcomed newcomer Jerry Roucher, founder of the Central Illinois Jazz
Festival in 1975, as assistant Club coordinator.

1988: Began Jazz in the Park.

1989: Named Jerry Roucher as executive vice president; hired first
Festival music director, John Clayton.

1990: Presented “Festival in Tribute to Dick Hyman,” with 35-piece
West Coast Florida Chamber Music Ensemble; welcomed 1,000th
member; began Jazz at Noon (now Jazz at Two); moved Member
Concerts to Sarasota Opera House; bought first computer and
copier; named Jerry Roucher as president, succeeding Hal Davis,
who died suddenly three weeks later.

Over the next decade, Jerry’s steady hand guided the Club to
continued growth. By 1997, the Festival talent roster approached 100,
membership had reached 2,500, and the Club expanded its Festival
concert to “Festival Week.” That year the Club also created Jazzlinks,
a fifth-grade curriculum combining social studies and music in Sarasota
County Schools. In 2013 this morphed into a program for eleventh-
graders in collaboration with Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe. The
Club also put musicians in some schools and increased its scholarship
program. In 1998 it added a Jazz Caravan by Trolley to the Festival.

jazzclubsarasota.org 12

A highlight of Jerry’s era
occurred in 2000 when
the Van Wezel closed for
renovations. The Festival
was held in a circus tent,
where music director
Dick Hyman entertained
audiences on a calliope.

Jerry retired as president Following the theme of “All in the Family” for the 20th Festival
in 2000, succeeded by in 2000, music director Dick Hyman assembled a band that

Dave Walrath, Peg Pluto, Judy Hyman, violin.

and now Ed Linehan. Each one has made
unique and valuable contributions to the
success of the Jazz Club.

Dick Hyman and Ken Peplowski Although membership dwindled for several
years after Jerry’s departure, the Club has
been rebuilding. Festival attendance has
picked up under renowned clarinetist Ken
Peplowski, now in his third year as Festival
music director. Audiences also appreciate
the Club’s practice of pairing established
performers with emerging stars, drawing
its talent from around the world. Recent

Festivals beautifully exemplify this
philosophy.

Recognizing that a strong membership Akiko Tsuruga (organ), Houston Person

High School Band

CARES Competition

Attendees at last year’s Jazz Festival were treated to
performances by three of our area’s top high school
jazz ensembles. The thirteen high schools in Sarasota
and Manatee counties are being invited again this year to
compete for the opportunity of performing at a Festival
concert. The competition will take place on a weekend in
January 2020. Members of the Club and the general public
are invited to attend the competition, which is a wonderful
opportunity to see and hear the incredible musical talent of
our high school students.
Three certified band competition judges will critique each band
and make a final determination of ranking the bands. The
Club will offer cash prizes of $3,000 to first place, $2,000 for
second, and $1,000 for third. These cash prizes were utilized
last year to purchase instruments, buy musical arrangements
and otherwise enhance the schools’ jazz programs.
The top bands will also be offered the opportunity to perform
at the Jazz Festival or another Jazz Club event. The winning
students also receive admission to one of the evening
festival concerts. The entire jazz community benefits from
the participation and attendance of our next generation of
jazz performers.
Be on the lookout for information and details on the date,
place and time of the High School Jazz Band competition.

Scholarships CARES

The Jazz Club helps turn high school kids into young adults

seriously pursuing a career in jazz!

Our scholarship program’s goal is to provide the opportunity for
students to further their understanding of jazz music and/or develop
performance skills in the field of jazz. Residents of Southwest Florida
who are high school seniors or current college students are eligible to
apply for scholarships at www.jazzclubsarasota.org/scholarships.

There are sixteen outstandingly talented scholarship students, ranging
from freshmen to seniors in their undergraduate studies this year,
including a female vocalist. Both academically and musically gifted,
the winners have all been highly praised by their professors.

We provide a number of opportunities for the students to perform together for
both our enjoyment and theirs. These students understand how supportive
the Jazz Club membership has been and often express their gratitude.

A brief bio of one of our Sarasota
scholars for 2019-2020!
Blake Bennett, senior
Florida State University, Tallahassee
Instrument – trumpet

We have known Blake since he was a student
at Pine View School. His dual majors of Jazz
Music and Psychology benefit each other as
he has begun to focus on music cognition
in preparation for graduate studies in music
education. Selected to participate in the
International Trumpet Guild in Miami this summer and was also chosen to be a
teaching assistant at the Stanford University Summer Music Camp.

At FSU, Blake works closely with a leading Jazz educator, Scotty Barnhart.
Blake has been selected to perform in the highest-ranking bands at FSU and
his Junior Recital was brilliant, garnering praise from Leon Anderson, Director
of the Jazz program at FSU.

CARES Jazzlinks

Jazzlinks brings history to
life for high school students through

collaboration with the Jazz Club of

Sarasota, Westcoast Black Theatre

Troupe and Sarasota County Schools.

The project, funded in part by a

grant from the Florida Arts Council,

illuminates important aspects of

African-American history through jazz

music, the lives of performers and

Joel King enjoys A Ticket A Tasket with Teresa historical events. Now in its sixth year,
Stanley as Ella Fitzgerald in Jazzlinks performance the focus is on the contrast between the
success of African-Americans during

The Harlem Renaissance and those in the South, struggling with the aftermath of the

Civil War and Reconstruction.

All Sarasota high schools and several in Manatee County participate in the project,
which includes a teacher workshop, classroom experience and performance. The
response has been enthusiastic and is reflected in the assessment of student
and teacher learning. Jazzlinks was originally created as a 5th grade curriculum
that was implemented in all Sarasota elementary schools in the early 2000s. In
2013 the state curriculum changed the focus of African-American history to high
school. The idea occurred to transform the original Jazzlinks unit into a dynamic
experience for 11th grade students. The Jazz Club approached Westcoast Black
Theatre Troupe (WBTT),
a thriving professional
theatre, specializing in
plays that promote and
celebrate the African-
American life. WBTT’s
sold-out shows have
featured themes, music
and content that resonate
with the original concept
of Jazzlinks.

Jazzlinks cast sings How I Got Over in Harlem Renaissance
performance.

It’s the Lil & Louis

by Jo Morello

oaring ’20s!...and “Hot Miss Lil” is a star!
Barely twenty, she’s already a band leader,

R arranger, composer, singer — and usually
the only woman in Chicago’s hottest bands. As
pianist with King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band, she’s
unimpressed when “Little Louis” Armstrong, a pudgy
bumpkin with a cornet, arrives from New Orleans, but the
shy “Satchelmouth” wins her over. Lil becomes his friend,
mentor, co-composer, arranger, manager and wife. LIL & LOUIS
is a unique love story about “the First Couple of Jazz.”
