WELCOME NOTE
By Offiong Ononokpono (SP)
It has been 30 years already since we walked out of a great Citadel of
learning, Immaculate Concep on Secondary School Itak, Ikono; a haven of
vison fair indeed.
There could not have been a be er me to celebrate the years, for now our
lives are glazed with experiences, the girls have become women, with many
carrying their candles to light their world. The world has become even larger
than Mma. Jaja said it was. Yet we live, s ll we soar.
We gather as a family to thank God who has led us through the years. Sadly, we
lost Okpon Utuk, Ekae e Uko, Helen Idem, Nnamso Assiek, Anne Ekpo, Imo
Effiong, Tahiri Ekpe, Mercy Ekong, Idongesit Peters and Juliana Charles. May their
souls rest in peace.
ICSS Class 91 forum, came to be a er Uduak Johnson (Jonkito) made an excellent a empt
at lis ng the names of the girls that passed through ICSS in season '85 to '91. Sharing
memories within the group became a fun me to look forward to, me here became my
favorite spice for all dull days and voila, it has come to stay.
In this forum, we seek to encourage ourselves to greater and be er works, give healthy shoulders to
lean on, celebrate life in all its glory, share moments and experiences. Though a very informal group, we
have encouraged every member to pay at least 1,000 every month to the group account to help with some of
our expenses as the needs arise. Most of the ac ve par cipants have gracefully done this and it has been most
helpful. During this reunion we will deliberate more on a las ng structure to guide our opera ons. This will be
binding on all a er the celebra on, enough reason why we should all a end physically or virtually.
We intend to share our experiences, to keep hope alive, to encourage ourselves never to stop trying as there is no
limit to what determina on and purposeful strides can achieve. We intend to learn more about middle age and
the years ahead.
We intend to unwind in lots of ways, relive the years, laugh about our childhood follies and truancies. The
celebra on will be so 'LIT' I know it, I feel it already.
Time is not fixed. As the years roll, so do our ages. So, let us celebrate life while we can.
Let us rejoice Lovelies, the me is just right and the season apt.
I love you all and I am glad to be part of your world. We share a story.
God bless class 91

HYMN
COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS
1. When upon life's billows you are tempest-tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings; name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.
[Chorus]
Count your blessings; Name them one by one.
Count your blessings; See what God hath done.
Count your blessings; Name them one by one.
Count your many blessings; See what God hath done.
2. Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings; ev'ry doubt will fly,
And you will be singing as the days go by.
3. When you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you his wealth untold.
Count your many blessings; money cannot buy
Your reward in heaven nor your home on high.
4. So amid the conflict, whether great or small,
Do not be1 discouraged; God is over all.
Count your many blessings; angels will a end,
Help and comfort give you to your journey's end.

OUR HEALTH AS WE AGE
By Sylvia Okpokpo
Health is wealth, a very simple statement that cannot be over emphasised. One can never appreciate
health unless you experience the devia on from your normal homeostasis. We all know that change is
the only constant thing in life and ageing is no excep on, reaching mid-life, does not have to mean
mid-life crises, experiencing physiological and emo onal changes as we age might be inevitable but there are
ways to embrace and live our mid-age lifestyle as the beginning of the best years to come.
Our current lifestyle is a determinant of our future health, therefore, now is the me to assess, plan,
implement and evaluate your lifestyle in order to age GRACEFULLY.
We o en hear that ageing is a normal process and there are obvious signs of ageing e.g. wrinkles and grey hair,
the ques on is, do you know that ageing affects every system that makes up the human body? I am sure we
o en wonder what part of the ageing process is considered normal. As we all know, the human body is very
complex and all the systems work in harmony to maintain a healthy func oning individual, an insult to one
system generates a sympathe c reac on from others thereby disrup ng the body's homeostasis, it will be
beneficial to have an idea of the different changes that may occur in the different systems of the body as we
age and how to manage them:
NERVOUS SYSTEM: Degenera ve process takes place in the brain as we age which can affect our memories
and thinking abili es, being very forge ul may be obvious sign.
MGT: Engaging in physical ac vi es, exercise more as it increases blood flow to the brain, healthy ea ng (
fruits, vegetables, whole grains ), low fat diets, decrease alcohol intake- too much alcohol leads to memory
loss, stay mentally ac ve- read books, engage in quizzes and puzzles and socialise more as it doesn't give room
for depression.
CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM: As we age there is narrowing of the blood vessels of the heart thereby exer ng
more pressure on the heart as it pumps blood resul ng in high blood pressure.
th
Anniversary
Home Coming Mission
MGT: Eat healthy diets, exercise regularly especially cardiovascular exercises such as swimming. Get enough
sleep as it helps to repair your heart and blood vessels. Avoid unnecessary stress as this increases pressure on
your heart.
REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM: Most women experience vaginal dryness as part of their ageing process and this can
make sex uncomfortable.
MGT: Have a discussion with your other half as this very changes will concern him as well, this very change if
not managed properly can become complex. Regular exercises is recommended as it improves the release of
sexual hormones, also visit your doctor as specific treatment such oestrogen cream could be suggested for the
vaginal dryness.
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM: As we age, most of us experience a decline in metabolism, we can accumulate weight if
our food por on doesn't change, and there is also risk of cons pa on.
MGT: Eat healthy diets rich in high fibre, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, reduce intake of diary products and
fa y foods and meats, reduce your food por on, engage in physical ac vi es, and increase your fluid intake, in
order to maintain a healthy weight exercise regularly.
URINARY SYSTEM: Our bladders and pelvic floor muscles losses elas city as we age thereby causing us to have
urgency and frequency in micturi on, it could also lead to stress incon nence.
MGT: perform Pelvic floor exercises, visit the toilet regularly, maintain a healthy weight, and avoid bladder
irritants.
MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM: Our bones seems to shrink in size and density as we age, they become weak and
very prone to fractures; they lose strength, and flexibility this will result in joint pain.
MGT: Increase your calcium and vitamin D intake, increased physical ac vi es is recommended, limit your
alcohol intake.
th
Anniversary
Home Coming Mission
SKIN: Our skin loses elas city, becomes thinner and fragile as we age. There is also a decrease in produc on of
natural oils which could make our skin drier and wrinkled.
MGT: Use mild soap and warm water for your bath and shower and use mild moisturiser and not bleaching
cream.
NOTE: Our sensory organs such as our sight and hearing are also affected with age and medical checkup is
advisable.
In Conclusion, we may not be able to stop the ageing process but we can definitely make choices that can
improve and maintain a healthy life as we age, living a healthy life mostly involves weight management,
healthy ea ng and exercises which means it is very cheap to stay healthy. I am always of the opinion that black
people are organically created by God and we are so blessed with our body composi on hence, BLACK DON'T
CRACK. Every appliance works be er when rebooted and we are no excep on, yearly MOT is recommended
for us all.

ITAK, A PLACE TO REMEMBER
By Uduak CW. Akpan
The trees looked like they were weeping. The sun, up in the sky radiated cold rays. The air was s ll,
unfriendly, unkind, unsure. Whose idea was it to take me to boarding school? I am only 11 years old, I
thought to myself. How am I going to cope, alone; no Mum, no Dad, no sisters, no brothers, no friends. No
wonder I was shivering in the car, on that warm a ernoon as my parents drove me from home to Itak.
A er a journey that felt like eternity, Dad and Mum dropped me off at Itak. It was my first day at school. The last
few weeks had been a frenzy; the tailor had sewn my uniforms, we went shopping for blue berets, brown
sandals, a small ma ress, a pillow, white bedsheets and pillow cases, a plas c bucket, toiletries – including
bleach and blue to keep my white uniforms dazzling, provisions, a small iron, cutlass, broom. Mum bought me
Tetmosol soap and dus ng powder, she said the tetmosol soap would protect me from scabies and other skin
infec ons and the dus ng powder would keep heat rashes at bay. My long hair was cut low a day before we le
home. I put all my newly sewn uniforms in one of Mum's leather boxes. The items my parents bought for me
were so many, that I wondered if my parents were sending me away from home for good.
Let's take a pause here. Reflect on your first day in Itak……..what are the feelings that come to your mind. Group
discussion……..
- How was your first night in Itak?
- How did you survive the first week?
- What school work did you do?
- What was your favourite ac vity? Going to the farm? Dancing? Singing? Girls Guide? JETS?
- Who were your friends in school? How were you formed by these friendships?
- Did you have a school mother, school friend, school cousin, school daughter?
- Who was your favourite teacher?
- What do you think was unique about the '91 Set?

Let's think about your last day at Itak. You have wri en your WAEC exams. You have registered for Jamb. You
have a plan for your future.
Let's go back 30 years, you are about to walk out of the gate in Itak for the last me as a student. What are your
feelings? Are you smiling? Are you feeling like a success? Are you thankful? Compare those feelings with the
feelings you had, as you were brought to Itak on the first day.
Finally, I am Mrs. R. M. Geo-Jaja's legacy. You are Mrs. R. M. Geo-Jaja's legacy. What legacy are you leaving or will

EMBRACING AND ENJOYING MENOPAUSE
By Mbono Essien
INTRODUCTION
It has been observed that menopause occurs when a woman has stopped menstrua ng for 12 months
consecu vely and can no longer become pregnant naturally. It usually begins between the ages of 45 and 55 but
can develop before or a er this age range (Vivien 2017). For most women menopause can trigger
uncomfortable symptom, such as hot flashes and weight gain, causing them to seek medical a en on. While
some women have symptoms at all. During this phase of life, there is a natural decline in reproduc on
hormones.
WHAT IS MENOPAUSE?
The ceasing of menstrua on? The period in a woman's life (typically between the ages of 45 and 55) when
menstrua on ceases for consecu ve 12 months. It also brings an end to fer lity. Oxford Language Dic onary.
AGE RANGE FOR MENOPAUSAL EXPERIENCE
Studies reveals that menopause occurs more in women's age ranging from 45 to 55. This means that it also
occurs in women below 45 years which is earlier than normal while those 45 and above is considered normal,
(Dennertain et al 2002).
CAUSES OF (EARLY) MENOPAUSE
Natural decline in reproduc ve hormones: There are 2 main female hormones- estrogen and progesterone.
They help develop and maintain female sex characteris cs and play important role in the menstrua on cycle,
fer lity and pregnancy.
Primary ovarian insufficiency: This is the loss of normal func on of the ovaries before the age of 40. In this case
the ovaries do not produce normal amount of estrogen or release eggs regularly. It leads to infer lity. With
treatment a woman with this condi on can get pregnant.
Surgery that remove the ovaries (oophorectomy): A er this surgery, menstrua on ceases and normal
symptoms of menopause manifest such as night sweats, hot flashes and vaginal dryness.
th
Anniversary
Home Coming Mission
Chemotherapy and radia on therapy: Both are used for the treatment of cancer but they can cause early
menopause because these treatments are toxic to the ovaries, especially when used at high does during
treatment. Whole body radia on therapy and radia on in the pelvic area are more likely to affect the ovaries.
STAGES OF MENOPAUSE
These process take place gradually through three stages.
- Perimenopause: Here the cycle becomes irregular. Most women hit this stages around age 47. With this
irregular flow and hot flashes one can s ll get pregnant.
- Menopause: This is when an individual has the final menstrual period. One may be unsure if that is the last
one un l 12 months roll past. Hot flashes, vaginal dryness, sleep problems and other symptoms are
common in this stage.
- Post Menopause: This begins when you hit the one-year mark from the last period. Once that happens, that
individual could be referred to as postmenopausal for the rest of her life. At this stage vaginal bleeding is not
expected, so consult a doctor as soon as possible if you experience such.
SYMPTOMS OF MENOPAUSE
Menopause usually in self diagnosable especially where individuals are well informed or educated. Symptoms
vary in severity due to gene and the stages (perimenopause) are also a factor to be considered. They include:
- Irregular menstrua on
- Hot flashes; Insomnia
- Mood swings
- Brain fog (migraine) leading to gradual loss of memory
- Vaginal dryness
- Pains in the vagina during intercourse
- Night sweats
- Weight gain and slowed metabolism
- Chills; charges in skin elas city
- Thinning hair and dry skin

- Loss of breast fullness
- Finally, period cessa on.
skipping periods during perimenopause is common and expected. O en, menstrual periods will skip a month or
months and return for few months. Periods also tend to happen on shorter cycles, so they are closer together.
Despite irregular menstrua on, pregnancy in possible (Jah Shifren 2008). If have you have skipped a period but
not are not sure if it is a menopausal transi on, consider a pregnancy test.
SIDE EFFECT OF MENOPAUSE ON THE BODY
Menopause involves a whole host of effects on the body which is usually uncomfortable, though for some,
effect may go unno ced.
- The reproduc ve func on of the body declines. No ovula on, no pregnancy. Decreased or lack of libido.
- The endocrine system is affected by slow metabolism. The body reserves energy more because calories and
fat are not easily brunt. This can lead to weight gain. (Wulf 2016).
- Menopause affect the nervous system and infringes on the overall mood. One may experience mood
swings that cause irritability, anxiety or depression beyond a couple of weeks. Sleep can be challenging with
hot flashes and night sweats.
- It may also affect memory.
- The excretory system also sends its signal through urine incon nence. One may urinate more o en or leak
when you laugh, sneeze or workout. Frequent urina on can also interfere with sleep.
- Cardiovascular system: lower levels of estrogen may increase the risk of heart diseases, such as heart a ack
or stroke. Where necessary your doctor may recommend Hormones Replacement Therapy (HRT) to
counteract some of these changes.
- Skeletal and muscular systems: Bones may lose their density during menopause. This can increase risk of
bones fractures. Menopausal women are also at risk of developing osteoporosis. This is a condi on where
bone becomes thin and lose their strength as they become less dense and their quality is reduced. This can
lead to broken bones which can cause disability and makes daily ac vi es extremely difficult. Joint may
become s ff and achy. Regular exercise can help reduce pains around the joint.
MANAGEMENT AND SELF CARE OF MENOPAUSE
Treatment depends severity. The treatment is focused on the symptoms for relief, e.g. dryness of the vagina in
managed with topical lubricant. Medica ons can reduce the severity and frequency of hot flashes. In some
th
Anniversary

circumstances, oral hormone (estrogen) therapy may be used. An individual who comes down with depression
or anxiety disorders is treated for such and psychoeduca on is a must. (WHO 1996).
- Dietary supplement could be effec ve be it applied alone or in conjunc on with other treatments to
promote health.
- Prac ce what is best for you depending on your circumstances, like drinking may be cold water o en or
taking a shower when you have hot flashes.
- For those achy joint, if one is certain it is not arthri s then one can apply smoothing balm for relief.
- Consume sufficient fruits and vegetable. Make smoothie if you can. Reduce carbohydrate, uncooked salt,
fa y food, alcohol etc.
- Exercise is very important.
- Relaxa on technique: Deep breathing exercise regular rhyme exercise, yoga and other ac vi es that
reduces symptoms of stress.
- Keep your doctor's appointment.
- Quit smoking
- General life style changes.
CONCLUSION
Experiencing menopause for woman of our age range is in evitable. It reminds us of the reality of our ages and
physical advancements. Reaching this phase of life beckons on us to loud our gra tude to our creator Jehovah
God. Therefore, menopause, despite the challenges it comes with in worth embracing and enjoying.

LIFE AFTER SCHOOL: EXPERIENCES,
CHALLENGES AND LESSONS
By Uduak Johnson
At the end of the school year, as we walked out of the school gate, we all had our hopes, and aspira ons.
Our dreams of what life out in the world would look like. Especially as we looked to the brighter side of
life, we hoped to gain admission into choicy ter ary ins tu ons. A er being holed up for what seemed
like eternity in school, behind bars, amidst rules. Dreams for some was to se le in for early marriage,
considering their background, and for some others because a beau ful woman stared back at them.
Some entered into their family business and some others learnt a trade. Some others relocated outside the
shores of Nigeria. And for an unfortunate few, life took a different turn for them. Life had chosen to decide
what'll be doled out to them and I found myself in this category.
Interes ngly, li le did Hannah (a Bible character) know that she was being prepared to birth a prophet of God.
For the million mes Peninah taunted, mocked, and provoked her, she never knew that God had it all planned
out.. That what the devil means for evil in the life of a child of God, God turns it for good.
Our God is awesome! let's speak of His goodness, wonders and faithfulness as we gather to thank Him for all He
has done for us in the last 30years.
Listen to the concluding part of my tes mony as we gather.

FINANCIAL INTELLIGENCE
By Offiong Ononokpono
Financial intelligence though an expert discipline is a must know for all who desire to be successful
irrespec ve of how one defines success. Some may be liquid today and spend more on frivoli es or
carelessly and of course are worse off at the end, while others have li le cash but are financially intelligent
and happy with their toil and are considered successful. It is very rare to find a successful person who is not
financially intelligent.
For this discourse, we will define Financial Intelligence as the knowledge of the INS and OUTS of financial
situa ons. It is a li le bit in all of us and fortunately not gender specific. Most of us are unaware of its advantage
and therefore, downplay its importance.
WHY FINANCIAL INTELLIGENCE?
For wealth increase: With a good knowledge of your cashflow… That is, where the money comes from and how
it is used up, it is easy to spot when spending is wasteful and how this can be modified, reduced or totally
discon nued to increase wealth reten on.
For proper enlightenment on how to relate with money: Money is a means to an end, not the end itself. A means
to meet your needs, not the need. Successful people control money and not the other way round… This is ideal.
Formal educa on does not address the issue of money, we need to seek to know.
To help us live life on our own terms: it is not so much about how much one earns but how well one uses those

WHAT TO DO
Financial Intelligence entails prudence and this is en rely our responsibility and so demands our a en on. We
cannot wish this away as what we make of tomorrow depends on how we build today.
It is important to do the following
1. Choose a Financial plan and s ck to it as best as you can. Failure to do this will keep us was ng rather
than spending resources. Some place themselves in self imposed social classes, some want to be called
good and so spend without restric on, some a end every func on ki ed to the teeth. The list is
endless.
2. Budget wisely, no ng that the least part of your budget should be on the welfare of others. The first
should be your recurring expenses. shelter, food, clothing…. We know the rest.
3. Know what you own, what you owe and what your goals are.
4. Whatever you do, learn to pay yourself first. Give yourself a cash cushion by having an emergency
savings that can sustain you for 12 to 18 months if your source of income is suddenly removed. Check
your lifestyle.
5. Prepare for emergencies: Insurance
6. Start saving for re rement if you have not done that already.
7. Invest in a profitable venture, preferably something you are passionate and knowledgeable about.
Invest in your habit. Learn more about things that interest you. That will help.
8. Do not save only in cash or too heavily in cash. This makes people become panicky if a financial
ins tu on fails or there is infla on in the land. Money suddenly loses value over me, but good
investments appreciate.
9. Invest more on the long term, leave savings for cash cushions, emergencies, and short-term needs.
This list is inexhaus ble so never stop seeking to know more.
It is a ght rope, but I know we can walk it.
Be financially Intelligent, it is the way to go.
