Language Craft In The English
Language Classroom

The English Language Teaching Centre’s Outreach Outreach Programme 2016
Programme from May to October 2016 is an on-going
out-of-campus activity. It aims to reach out to forty Language Craft
five primary and secondary schools in four districts in in the EL Classroom
Selangor and one district in Negeri Sembilan. The theme
of the 2016 Outreach Programme is Language Craft in
the English Language Classroom.

Story-telling and language crafts activities were carried
out based on pre-school, lower primary and lower
secondary students’ needs and proficiency. Teachers in-
charged are encouraged to participate and support their
students. Teachers are further expected to share with
peers and extend these activities in their classrooms.

Program Intervensi Tambah Opsyen Bahasa Inggeris (PITO BI) is offered to non-option English language teachers in primary
schools. It is a 12-week (16 credits) programme conducted through face-to-face and online interactions. The programme

The Asia Pacific Regional Policy Forum on Early Childhood Care and Education (APFEC) 2016, with the theme ‘The
Transformative Power of Early Childhood: Innovations for Inclusivity and Quality’ was held at the Marriot Hotel in Putrajaya
from 19 – 21 July 2016. The forum was aimed at developing innovative strategies to improve the quality of childhood care

Dr. Khairul Aini Mohamed Jiri presented a paper entitled
“The Impact of Teaching Strategies on Second Language
Learning: A Study of Adult ESL Classroom” at The Australian
Council of TESOL Association (ACTA) and Australian Council
for Adult Literacy (ACAL) International Conference, Diversity:
Exchanging ways of being“ in Perth, Western Australia from
7 - 11 April 2016. Her research paper draws upon a pilot study
conducted to examine the impact of the teaching strategies
on adult ESL learner at the Mid-State Literacy Council (MSLC),
Central Pennsylvania USA that offers free ESL classes to adult
ESL learners. Her study is beneficial to the ESL field in Malaysia
whereby it provides knowledge regarding adult ESL learning.

Possibilities for Flipped Classroom and HOTS to be Embedded
in ELT Training” at the International Conference on Education
and Higher Order Thinking Skills 2016 in Conjunction with 2nd
International Seminar on Science and Mathematics Education
2016 at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Johor Bahru. The
conference was held from 11-13 April 2016. At the 20-minute
paper presentation, he shared how Flipped Classroom Model and
HOTS Concept could be used in the ELT training. Dr. Rashidah
binti Rahamat (ELTC) and Assc. Prof. Dr. Haji Abdul Ghani bin Abu
(UPSI) are the co-authors of the paper.

Dr Mohamed bin Abu Bakar was invited as a keynote speaker
to present a paper titled ‘Fostering Creativity and Innovation in
Teaching and Learning’ at the Seminar Kebangsaan Kajian Pendidikan
Bahasa 2016 organised by Akademi Pengajian Bahasa Universiti
Teknologi Mara, Malacca Campus. The seminar was held from 22
August to 23 August 2016 and was attended by approximately
200 participants from all sectors of the education fraternity. In his
keynote, Dr Mohamed shared his perspective on fostering creativity
and innovation in teaching and learning as realised in the Malaysia
Education Blueprint (MEB) 2013-2025. His keynote detailed how
creativity and innovation is fostered in curriculum, pedagogy and
assessment within the Malaysian context. A special focus was given
to the role of creativity and innovation as outlined in the Roadmap
for English Language Education Reform in Malaysia. He concluded his
keynote by emphasising that teachers are a critical factor in fostering
creativity and innovation in 21st century teaching and learning.



Szarmilaa Dewie Krishnan presented a paper on “Learning English in a
Non-Threatening Environment” at the MELTA International Conference

2016. The Conference was organised by MELTA with the theme “21st
Century Learning in English Language Education: Embracing Technology

and Progressive Pedagogy”. At the 30-minute paper presentation,
she shared the effectiveness of English language camps in improving

oral proficiency among Form Four students. She also presented the
different activities adopted by the facilitators of the camps to make
literature accessible to both teachers and students, and the outcomes

of the camps. The findings of this study have broad relevance to
educators who find it challenging in teaching prescribed literature
texts. The statistical data presented enlightened participants on how
creating a non-threating environment enhances effective learning.



Sharmini Siva Vikaraman and Dr. Rashidah Binti Rahamat
conducted a seminar organised by Kesatuan Perkhidmatan
Perguruan Kebangsaan Malaysia (NUTP). The seminar was
held on 12 February 2016 at Grand Seasons Hotel, Kuala
Lumpur. At the seminar, Sharmini Siva Vikaraman shared
the issues and challenges faced by teachers in the English
Language teaching whereas Dr. Rashidah focused on the
teaching of grammar in the classroom. In addition, they
conducted sharing sessions and hands-on activities during
the seminar. The seminar was attended by 75 teachers
throughout Malaysia.



Sharmini Siva Vikaraman conducted a workshop on “Using Film in the
Language Classroom to Support the 4C’s of 21st Century Skills: Jungle

Book in Parts” at the MELTA International Conference from 30 – 31
May 2016. The Conference was organized by MELTA with the theme

“21st Century Learning in English Language Education: Embracing
Technology and Progressive Pedagogy”. At the 30-minute workshop,
she managed to engage 73 participants in classroom activities using
film - The Jungle Book, and online teaching tools EdPuzzle and Kahoot

to teach English in the classroom. She shared how children become
engaged to moving images on screen that automatically leads to
comprehending the message delivered through the film watched
and using film as a text that provides opportunities to support

communication, comprehension, cooperation, creativity, collaboration

Call for papers ESL Practitioner

Articles are invited for the third issue of the ESL Practitioner journal to be published in October 2017. The ESL Practitioner
is a practice oriented ELT publication by the English Language Teaching Centre, Malaysia. It is aimed at advancing the
professional development of ELT practitioners in areas of teaching, training and management of ELT materials. The
publication also acts as a forum for discussion of ELT related challenges faced by ELT professionals. The ESL Practitioner is
published once a year and has a wide circulation of readership which include lecturers from local and private universities,
teacher training centres, MoE division officers, State Department officers and school teachers. The fourth issue of the
