FROM THE BOARD
KARA PETERMAN
Thank you for joining us for a season that
continues to redefine what it means to make
music together and provide music for our
community.
Last year we explored several formats of
remote rehearsal and performance, and were
astounded by how immersive the experience
could be. We are particularly grateful to
Steven Bathory-Peeler, who kept students
nected and learning in percsoonn- last season. Recorded concerts from this
small, dedicated group of musicians, and projects from the Virtual Youth
Orchestra run by Chris Moehringer, are available at pvsoc.org/youth-
orchestra.
We breathed a collective sigh of relief when we resumed full in-person
rehearsals in September, but we are far from a return to normal. We are
navigating rehearsals with winds and brass spaced 10 feet apart from each
other and every flavor of face mask and bell cover. To quote the signage
around my own workplace, “It’s weird, but it works.”
Today, we welcome Strings for Kids to share the stage with the PVSYO for
their annual joint concert. These programs share a common history and
serve the same group of families invested in the music education of their
children. Thanks to Julie Carew and Artspace for the ongoing collaboration.
The Pioneer Valley Symphony has begun its 83rd season bringing concert
recordings to our audiences online. Tickets are by optional donation at
pvsoc.org/tickets; we hope you will join us! But ticket sales and tuition only
covers a portion of our operating costs. Please support our efforts in
accessible community arts programming by making the PVS and the YO
part of your Giving Tuesday and year-end giving plans. Or join the Continuo
Society, a highly impactful way of providing financial support through
automatic recurring donations.
Thank you for your support.
FROM THE DIRECTORS
STEVEN BATHORY-PEELER
& JULIE CAREW
Welcome parents, family members and
friends:
We’re delighted to have you with us today to
celebrate not only the students of Strings for
Kids and the Pioneer Valley Symphony
Youth Orchestra who have worked so hard
this fall, but also you, their parents and
family members, and our whole local music
education community. For more than a year
and a half, we have faced the challenges of
the pandemic together, and experienced all
kinds of new things, like outdoor and online
rehearsals, conversations about aeresols and face masks, online meetings,
and so many emails! We are thrilled to be back in person, and we are
inspired by the resilience of our students during this challenging time.
Some of our players have just begun their studies, and others have been
playing for many years, but all of them have spent many hours preparing
for this concert. We are proud to showcase the hard work and success of
our students, and we hope to encourage them to continue their musical
exploration for many years to come.
Strings for Kids would like to thank the school administrators at the
Newton School, Federal Street School, Discovery School at Four Corners,
and Greenfield Middle School. The PVS Youth Orchestra also thanks to
Matthew Sypek, Band Director at Greenfield High School, and the custodial
crew at Greenfield High School under the supervision of Terry Fisher, who
graciously allow the PVSYO to rehearse in the GHS band room each Sunday.
We jointly thank Greenfield Public Schools for providing us this space for
our concert and, of course, the parents, families, and educators of our
students. Thank you for all you do to inspire the next generation of
musicians.
Enjoy the concert!

ABOUT THE ENSEMBLES
Founded in 2013, THE PIONEER VALLEY SYMPHONY YOUTH ORCHESTRA
(PVSYO) is made up of student musicians from schools across the region,
including Hampshire and Franklin counties, and southern Vermont and New
Hampshire. The PVSYO is an ensemble of talented, hard-working
elementary-, middle-, and high-school-age musicians. We have an orbiting
team of dedicated family members, professional musicians, and educators,
including Youth Orchestra Director Steven Bathory-Peeler and Youth
Orchestra Assistant Emese Nemeth.
The PVSYO rehearses weekly on Sundays, 5-7PM, at Greenfield High School.
The PVSYO performs with the Pioneer Valley Symphony Orchestra in at least
one concert each season, holds an independent concert each semester, and
takes a performance tour of local schools each spring.
If you would like to learn more about the PVS Youth Orchestra, please visit
our website at pvsoc.org/youth-orchestra, email us at [email protected] or

SERVING FRAKL
STEVEN BATHORY-PEELER
YOUTH ORCHESTRA DIRECTOR
Steven Bathory-Peeler is delighted to be the
music director for the Pioneer Valley
Symphony Youth Orchestra. He brings more
than 25 years of experience conducting,
composing, and teaching to the PVSYO.
Steven is a 24-year resident of Franklin
County, and apart from his role as Youth
Orchestra Conductor, he works as Director of
Orchestras and Concert Band at Northfield
Mount Hermon School where he has held the
position since 1997.
S teven began his conducting career in 1992 when he served as assistant
conductor for the Boston Civic Symphony and New England Conservatory
Opera Department. Conducting teachers have included: Jeffrey Rink,
Michael Jinbo, and Glen Adsit. Steven holds a DMA in composition from the
University of Hartford, an MMus in voice from New England Conservatory,
and a BMus in voice from Indiana University. He undertook further study at
the Pierre Monteaux School for Conductors and the Mozarteum in Salzburg,
Austria. Steven also served as the assistant conductor for the PVS during the
2001-2002 and 2002-2003 seasons.
Steven has been recognized by the American Society of Composers, Authors,
and Publishers as an emerging composer with awards given in 2001 and
2002. In addition to the general duties of the music director of the PVSYO,
Steven is excited to teach members of the orchestra about giving back to
the community and how to become a positive role model for others. Steven
lives in Gill, with his wife Megan and two children, Ella and Quinn.
JULIE CAREW
STRINGS FOR KIDS DIRECTOR
Julie Carew is the Director Strings for Kids and
the Music Director at Artspace Community
Arts Center. She is a cellist with a Bachelor’s of
Music in Cello Performance from the Hartt
School of Music at the University of Hartford,
and a Master's of Music in Cello Performance
with a Suzuki Pedagogy emphasis from the
Lamont School of Music at the University of
Denver, CO.
Julie has many years of experience in Colorado
and across Massachusetts, founding, directing
and teaching in various string instrument programs. These programs include
Denver Talent Education, City Strings, Rocky Mountain Cello Fest, Lynn
Public Schools, Community Music Center of Boston, Powers Music School
and the Suzuki School of Newton. Julie came to Greenfield in 2016 and joined
the faculty of Artspace, taking on her current roles in 2018. Julie is a member
of the New England Repertory Orchestra (NEROrchestra) and also maintains
a studio of private students.
Julie grew up as a cellist in the public school system and knows firsthand
what kinds of doors can be opened through such an opportunity. She enjoys
writing/developing curriculum and programs that focus on accessibility -
working to ensure that every child who wants to play an instrument has a
real chance to do so; inclusivity - asking questions around and pursuing the
goal of valuing all voices and experiences; and diversity - exploring the vast
array of musical repertoire available to us to hear, learn about and share,
honoring the history of those from whom it came.
