FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Friends,
This is an exciting time for the Pioneer
Valley Symphony Youth Orchestra!
This year marks the Youth Orchestra’s
10th anniversary, the first year with
newly appointed director Nell Wiener,
and another great joint concert with
Strings for Kids.
As you listen to the beautiful music,
consider the behind-the-scenes effort
required to make this music today.
Driving a bit too fast to make it to rehearsal on time, missing dinner
with loved ones, buying endless pencils, and, of course, subjecting all
those in earshot to the early stages of learning new music. Thank you to
everyone who sacrificed something to be here this afternoon to bring
joy to ourselves and to each other. This season is called “For the Love
of Music;” making beautiful music together is truly a labor of love for all
involved, whether you’re supporting a musician or are a musician yourself.
And at the end of the day, we wouldn’t have it any other way.
We celebrate the music today thanks to the dedication and hard work of
PVS Youth Orchestra Director Nell Wiener and Manager Casey Gilman;
the service and volunteerism of the PVS community; the trust of our
collaborators and business sponsors; and, most vitally, the encouragement
and financial gifts we receive from you. We need your continued help.
Please consider becoming a member of our Continuo Society, which
provides foundational support through automated monthly gifts. If you
have included the PVS in your estate planning, you are now a member
of our Da Capo Society. Please let us know so we can appropriately
acknowledge your investment in music for future generations. You can
find out more about giving to the PVS in the lobby, at pvsoc.org/donate,
or by phone at 413.773.3664.
We hope to see you at future concerts of the PVS Orchestra and Chorus,
and invite you to take advanvage of the free tickets we offer to all
students in the PVSYO and Strings for Kids programs, and ticket discounts
available for their parents. On behalf of the PVS Board of Directors, thank
you for your support of music, education, and our shared community. And
please, enjoy the music.
Kara Peterman
NOVEMBER 13, 2022 FALL COncert 3
FROM THE DIRECTORS
Dear Friends, Families, and Music Lovers,
On behalf of the Pioneer Valley
Symphony Youth Orchestra and Strings
for Kids, we warmly welcome you to this
Fall Concert! After musical ensembles
took such a hit during the heights of the
Covid pandemic, we are delighted to
feel fully back in the swing of things. This
afternoon’s program features 65 student
musicians, including 19 first-year Strings
for Kids players!
We know firsthand how important it is to have music education available
and accessible to all, and we are thankful for community partners like
Artspace and Greenfield Public Schools which help make that a reality in
our region. Particularly, we are thankful for parents and guardians: music
education is a huge investment of your time, energy, money, tire treads...
The program you hear this afternoon is a testament to your steadfast
support of your child’s efforts; we, in turn, are grateful for yours.
As music educators, we are always looking to find the “hook” for
students––those pieces of music that capture a student’s heart and
imagination, inspire a new level of artistic expression, and challenge them
to elevate their playing. These are the moments where a lifelong love of
music is born. Today, we will be playing Antonin Dvořák’s ninth symphony,
better known as Symphony from the New World, which is one such piece.
At once accessible and musically rich, it is an homage to sounds and
experiences from the Czech composer’s time spent in the United States
in the early 20th century. Interested in the local folk music vernacular,
Dvořák spent time seeking out African American spirituals and the music
of Native Americans, reveling in the rich melodies and harmonies he
encountered.
The musicians and we have so enjoyed working on the selections in this
program, and we are excited to offer that same enjoyment to you today!

Founded in 2013 and based in Greenfield, MA, THE PIONEER
VALLEY SYMPHONY YOUTH ORCHESTRA (PVSYO) is
made up of student musicians from across the region, including
Hampshire and Franklin counties and southern Vermont and New
Hampshire. The PVSYO is an ensemble of talented, hard-working
10- to 18-year-old musicians. We have an orbiting team of dedicated
family members, professional musicians, and educators, including
director Nell Wiener and manager Casey Gilman.
The PVSYO rehearses weekly on Sundays, 5-7 p.m., at Greenfield
High School. The PVSYO performs with the Pioneer Valley Symphony
Orchestra in at least one concert each season, holds an independent
concert each semester, and takes a performance tour of local schools
each spring. We are a vital part of the Pioneer Valley Symphony’s
mission to connect, inspire, and enhance our community by providing
opportunities to make, appreciate, and learn about classical music.

NELL WIENER
PVS YOUTH ORCHESTRA DIRECTOR
Nell Wiener is an educator, musician,
and arranger based in southwestern
New Hampshire. She brings 15 years
of experience teaching instrumental
and choral music across elementary,
middle, and high school levels,
working with students from their
very beginning moments all the
way through their development
into confident, capable musicians.
She enjoys weaving in elements
of history and music theory into
her teaching, inviting students to broaden their contextual
understanding and engage more deeply with the music. Young
musicians appreciate the upbeat and collaborative environment of
her ensembles, along with the engaging musical programming she
brings. Playing in orchestras has been a constant presence in Nell’s
life since childhood; she’s been a proud member of the viola section
in many youth and community ensembles over the years, and with
the Pioneer Valley Symphony Youth Orchestra she is honored to
work with the next generation of musicians within one of the oldest
community orchestra organizations in the country!
Nell holds a BA in Music from Wellesley College, where she studied
music theory with Martin Brody and conducting with Lisa Graham.
She worked for many years at Monadnock Waldorf School in
Keene, NH, teaching music as well as serving in faculty leadership.
Currently she teaches music at Gathering Waters Charter School
in Keene and maintains a private studio teaching violin and viola.

OUR THANKS
This concert is made possible in part by generous in-kind
contributions from Greenfield Public Schools, Artspace, Hillside
Pizza, and Richardson’s Candy Kitchen, and by the extraordinary
volunteer efforts of Jason and Meg Staloff, Carol Coan, Alex Miller,
Debbie Felton, and all of the families who contributed snacks,
rideshares, time, and support.
The PVS Youth Orchestra’s 10th season is funded in part by
Greenfield Cooperative Bank, the Mass Cultural Council, a state
agency, founding partner The Mary Stuart Rogers Foundation,
and the business sponsors advertised in this program book. Music
education programs like PVSYO and Strings for Kids would not
exist without the support of parents and families, the investment of
regional schools, and the guidance of local music teachers.
