NOVEMBER 12, 2023 FALL CONCERT 5 FROM THE DIRECTORS Dear Friends, Families, and Music Lovers, We are delighted to welcome you to the first official concert of the Pioneer Valley Symphony’s Youth Music Ensembles! Strings for Kids and the Youth Orchestra have played collaborative concerts for several years, but today is the first time we play together as sister programs of the PVS. In February 2023, the PVS’ growing education program welcomed Strings for Kids and other music initiatives formerly run by Artspace. Artspace’s music programs had been connected with the PVS for many years, including collaboratively founding the Youth Orchestra, so we are grateful that the PVS is ensuring the future of Strings for Kids and affordable music lessons in Greenfield. As educators, we deeply value providing accessible, highcaliber opportunities for learning, appreciation, and performance to all of our students. It is exciting to be co-creating a continuous path for instrumental education in Greenfield with each other, families, schools, and the broader community. Today’s program is a musical travelogue, featuring Mexican, Palestinian, English, and French folk music, as well as the sounds of the Iberian Peninsula in Pascual Marquina Narro’s España Cañi. Edvard Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite travels through all sorts of landscapes, real and imagined— Morning Mood depicts the sunrise over the Saharan desert, and In the Hall of the Mountain King evokes the gnomes and trolls of Norwegian folklore. Finally, we will return home to the Northeast U.S. with the fiddle tune Ashokan Farewell. As directors, we are grateful to our colleagues for all of their amazing work that enables us to do what we do. We also recognize and celebrate the commitment of the caregivers, parents, and families of our students who make it possible for their children to thrive as young musicians. Enjoy the music! Julie Carew, Director, Strings for Kids Nell Wiener, Director, Youth Orchestra

8 pioneer valley symphony YOUTH ENSEMBLES Nell Wiener is an educator, musician, and arranger based in southwestern New Hampshire. She brings 15 years of experience teaching instrumental and choral music across elementary, middle, and high school levels, working with students from their very beginning moments all the way through their development into confident, capable musicians. She enjoys weaving in elements of history and music theory into her teaching, inviting students to broaden their contextual understanding and engage more deeply with the music. Young musicians appreciate the upbeat and collaborative environment of her ensembles, along with the engaging musical programming she brings. Orchestras have been a constant presence in Nell’s life since childhood, She has been a proud member of the viola section in many youth and community ensembles over the years. In the PVS Youth Orchestra, she is honored to work with the next generation of musicians within one of the oldest community orchestra organizations in the country. Nell holds a BA in Music from Wellesley College, where she studied music theory with Martin Brody and conducting with Lisa Graham. She worked for many years at Monadnock Waldorf School in Keene, NH, teaching music as well as serving in faculty leadership. 10 pioneer valley symphony YOUTH ENSEMBLES Julie Carew is a cellist with a Bachelor’s of Music in Cello Performance from the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford, and a Master’s of Music in Cello Performance with a Suzuki Pedagogy emphasis from the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver, CO. As she learned about Suzuki pedagogy and observed workshops and institutes, Julie was inspired to make that same high-quality music education accessible to every child, especially in communities where it does not already exist. In 2001, Julie founded City Strings, a lowcost string program in North Aurora, CO. While living in Denver, Julie maintained a private studio of nearly 40 students, taught through Denver Talent Education, was a member of the Denver String Quartet and Centennial Philharmonic Orchestra, and was the music director for Destination Freedom: Black Radio Days. Since returning to New England in 2007, Julie has been teaching private and group classes at her home studio, and has held teaching positions at the Suzuki School of Newton, Community Music Center of Boston, the Powers Music School, and Lynn Public Schools. Julie joined the Artspace faculty in 2016, and has served as Director of Strings for Kids since 2018 and Education Programs Director for the Pioneer Valley Symphony since 2023. 14 pioneer valley symphony YOUTH ENSEMBLES The goal of STRINGS FOR KIDS is to ensure that every child in Greenfield has the opportunity to learn to play a string instrument. Strings for Kids is open to students, grades 3-7 in the Greenfield Public Schools and accepts new students each August. Students have two weekly lessons September through May. Tuition is subsidized by GPS and offered on a sliding scale, with additional financial assistance available. Instrument rental is included in the Strings for Kids program at no additional cost to the student. Through Strings for Kids, hundreds of students have learned cello and violin. There are many benefits of the Strings For Kids program: ❊ We are a steady force in the lives of our students and provide stability and continuity. ❊ We address societal concerns with our students. We go through challenging times together, and explore how we can think, be, and learn as musicians and appreciators of other musicians. ❊ We expand our students’ musical horizons in a variety of ways. We discuss difficult parts of music history, and help them to discover composers and musicians they may not otherwise learn about. ❊ We build community among our young musicians and bring our students together to support each other in remarkable ways. Started by Mary Kay Hoffman, Cecilia Berger, and Anna Wetherby at Artspace Community Arts Center in Greenfield in 2008, Strings for Kids is now a partnership program between the Greenfield Public Schools and the Pioneer Valley Symphony. NOVEMBER 12, 2023 FALL CONCERT 15 Founded in 2013 and based in Greenfield, MA, THE PIONEER VALLEY SYMPHONY YOUTH ORCHESTRA (PVSYO) is made up of student musicians from schools across the region, including Hampshire and Franklin counties and southern Vermont and New Hampshire. The PVSYO is an ensemble of talented, hard-working 10- to 18-year-old musicians. We have an orbiting team of dedicated family members, professional musicians, and educators, including Youth Orchestra Director Nell Wiener and Youth Orchestra Manager Casey Gilman. The PVSYO rehearses weekly on Sundays, 5-7 p.m., at Greenfield High School. The PVSYO performs with the Pioneer Valley Symphony Orchestra in at least one concert each season, holds an independent concert each semester, and takes a performance tour of local schools each spring. We are a vital part of the Pioneer Valley Symphony’s mission to connect, inspire, and enhance our community by providing opportunities to make, appreciate, and learn about classical music. Each season, student musicians can also join a PVSYO CHAMBER ENSEMBLE. Chamber Ensembles provide additional performance and educational opportunities for youth orchestra students who are ready for a more rigorous commitment. Past performances have included youth orchestra concerts, spring schools tour, community events, and more. Chamber ensembles are coached by professional musicians and educators.
