What is a memory?
Is it something you keep or lose?
Is it something you share?
Is it a place you visit?
Is it a thing you store?
The Museum of Random Memory, or MoRM, was created in 2016 by a group
of researchers, artists, curators, and activists participating in the CounterPlay
Festival in Aarhus. This year, a group of masters students in the Digital Living
Program at AU built an interface to go along with the MoRM.

What is the process of remembering
and forgetting in the digital age?
How are memories archived for us
by digital platforms like
Facebook and Google?
How are we creating our own or
others’ future memories?
What do the affordances
of social media like
Facebook encourage us
to remember or forget?
How might Aarhus
and Denmark
think creatively
about what
future they
are creating in
their routine
collection of data?
Whose memories and histories
get added to cultural databases?
Who or what might be forgotten?
How will you be remembered?
It’s a participatory platform for people to think about
and co-create memory-making in a playful way.
Where did you save it?
Did you back it up?
How many times did you print it?
How much metadata does it have?
Did it leave any traces?
How did you erase this photograph?
Is it still on the cloud?
Google it. Is it still there?
WHO IS WATCHING YOU?
”Mirror, mirror on the wall, who has the most data of them all?”
geolocation How much do we

And what about
that thumbprint
recognition thing?
As part of the Digital Living Masters program, we explore how online tracking
works. At the festival of research, we are showing visitors how to use programs
that can track the trackers. See for yourself!
How much are we outsourcing our memory?
For example, Google Photo will perform facial
recognition and organize all your photos for you.
…….(and store everything in the cloud)
For example, Netflix remembers our preferences and
calculates what we’ll want to watch next.
……(assuming we always want to watch the same
type of thing)
For example, Chatbook will automatically generate
family photo albums without any work from you.
…..(and also without any choices or input from you).
For example, Facebook sends automatic updates
about special events
…….(which it assumes based on your posts)
