The event attracted triathletes,

A WORTHWHILE EXERCISE TOO̜ ways. Some are the fittest they’ve ever
been, some not in the shape they’d like.
But to kickstart 2021, have an honest
assessment of your fitness. This could be
through sports testing, but it doesn’t have
to be technical or expensive. Completing a
familiar and specific session or route in
each discipline can be a great fitness gauge
and give you a benchmark to work from.
It’s then easier to set winter training goals
and improve your weaknesses.
Stay strong
The part of training that most athletes
hate, myself included, is strength and
conditioning. I’d much rather just get out
of the door, do my run and get home.
Activation exercises pre-training and
stretching afterwards feels monotonous,
but is essential to keeping me fit and
healthy. My life’s a lot busier with two kids
and, when those exercises go out the
window, I’ve ended up with niggles. I now
plan them into my day, even if the run is a
little shorter or calf rehab is while cleaning
my teeth. All the little extras help keep my
body in one piece.
Adapt your goals
It’s a lesson most of us had to learn in
2020. Having flexible goals helps. Have a
specific race, but also have options. For
example, if your A race involves flying
overseas, see what’s on locally around the
same time as a back-up. I know races can
be expensive, so research and understand
cancellation policies. Also, consider goals
that aren’t race related. I’ve started doing
an online pilates class and my aim is to
attend throughout winter when training
load increases in other areas.
Above all, enjoy
Why do we do all the training? My
motivation in the past was usually to be
race-ready. Now, a lot of my enjoyment
comes from simply loving swim, bike
and run. Having hard goals is good but
exercising without a focus just for mind
and body is great, too. I’ll now do a couple
of runs a week without wearing a watch.
I know roughly how long the loop takes,
and it doesn’t matter if I’m a little faster or
slower some days. X
