Ratneshwar Temple in Varanasi

Ratneshwar Mahadev Mandir ( also known as
Matri-rin Mahadev, or leaning temple of
Varanasi) is built in the holy city of Varanasi in
Uttar Pradesh , India. It was constructed from
1825 to 1830. The Temple is 12 metres in
height.
The temple , while apparently well – preserved ,
leans significantly towards the back side ( north-
west), and its garbhagriha is generally below
the water much of the year, except for a few
months during the summer.
The temple is dedicated to lord Shiva

The temple is elegantly constructed in the
classical style with a nagara shikhra and
phamsana madapa. Unlike all other temples of
Varanasi on the banks of Ganga, the temple is
built at a very low level. In fact, the water level
can reach the shikhara part of the temple. The
temple leans over 9 degrees.
The Builder must have known that its garbha
griha would be underwater for much of the year.
Inspite of much of the temple being underwater
during most of the year it is well preserved.

CARNATIC MUSIC

History-From the12th century onwards, Indian classical music began to diverge into two
distinct styles — Hindustani music and Carnatic music. Commentaries and other works,
such as Sharngadeva's Sangita Ratnakara, further elaborated on the musical concepts
found in Indian classical music. By the 16th and 17th centuries, there was a clear
demarcation between Carnatic and Hindustani music; Carnatic music remained relatively
unaffected by Persian and Arabic influences. It was at this time that Carnatic music
flourished in Vijayanagara, while the Vijayanagar Empire reached its greatest
extent. Purandara Dasa, who is known as the "father (Pitamaha) of Carnatic music",
formulated the system that is commonly used for the teaching of Carnatic
music. Venkatamakhin invented and authored the formula for the melakarta system of raga
classification in his Sanskrit work, the Chaturdandi Prakasika (1660 AD).

Origin-References to Indian classical music are made in many ancient texts,
including epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The Yajnavalkya
Smriti mentions वीणावादन तत्त्वज्ञः श्रुतीजातततवशारदः ताळज्ञश्चाप्रयासेन मोक्षमार्गं तनयच्छतत ( vīṇāvādana
tattvajñaḥ śrutijātiviśāradaḥ tālajñaścāprayāsena mokṣamārgaṃ niyacchati, "The one who is
well versed in veena, one who has the knowledge of srutis and one who is adept in tala,
attains liberation (moksha) without doubt". Carnatic music is based as it is today on musical
concepts (including swara, raga, and tala) that were described in detail in several ancient
works, particularly the Bharata's Natya Shastra and Silappadhikaram by Ilango Adigal.

Significance-Alongside the sound energy of Nada Yoga and its vibrations, Carnatic
Music evokes positive physical and spiritual influences, relieving you of all stress. Carnatic
music in its instrumental form comes with many advantages for kids, who can refine their
hand-eye synchronizations and motor skills.

Artists-

1.Semmangudi Srinivas Iyer- was a prominent Carnatic vocalist. He was regarded as one
of the male trinities of Carnatic music along with his contemporaries G.N. Balasubramaniam
and Madurai Mani Iyer.

2. M. Balamuralikrishna-was an Indian Carnatic vocalist, musician, multi-instrumentalist,
playback singer, composer, and character actor. He was awarded the Madras Music
Academy's Sangeetha Kalanidhi in 1978.

Indian classical arts, including Carnatic music, is a way to expose and familiarise children
with their culture and help them feel a sense of connection with India and its traditions. With
an aim to keep Carnatic music alive and t cater to students interested to learn Classical
music , there are various institutions in GURUGRAM which are giving full fledged coachings
with various students.
